Deltoid Ligament Ultrasound 2023

A summary of the sonographic technique and landmarks to assess the medial ankle ligament complex (Deltoid ligament). Please note, variations exist, and Deltoid ligament imaging is cursed by anisotropy which creates hypoechoic artefacts mimicking tears.
Always compare with the other side, and use ultrasound in conjunction with other imaging tests. The Deltoid ligament can be injured along with high ankle sprain, lateral ligament injury, midfoot (Chopart) injury, spring ligament injury and the list goes on. Make sure fracture and fracture dislocation has been excluded in the diagnostic workup.
