You should recognize Stevie Nicks here from your reaction to “Edge of Seventeen “ a few days ago. Fleetwood Mac, in their most popular incarnation, consisted of drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie (hence “Fleetwood Mac”), pianist Christine McVie (married to John for a while), guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks.

The singer is Stevie Nicks! You just saw her in "Edge of Seventeen"! She also wrote and sang "Dreams" and a whole lot of other Fleetwood Mac material ("The Chain," "Rhiannon," etc.). But there were 4 other member of the group (Mick Fleetwood, John MacVie, Christine MacVie, and Lindsey Buckingham) in its last iteration (the one that made hit records), and they all wrote songs. They have a very deep catalog, and thus far, you've only listened to Stevie Nicks' contributions.

Stevie Nicks (lead singer/songwriter) said the song refers to the time before she was famous - when she had a mattress on the floor with Lindsey Buckingham (lead singer, songwriter, guitarist, arranger, producer) when they were still a struggling musical couple/duo before joining Fleetwood Mac. That when she's feeling overwhelmed she takes her mattress off her bed to feel grounded.
FM started as a blues band in 1967 with Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Mick Fleetwood & John Mcvie - the later two being who Peter named the band for - knowing he wouldn't stay long. There was a lot of turnover (the two most notable members being Danny Kirwan & Bob Welch) until Buckingham & Nicks joined NYE 1974 - when FM became their most famous super star iteration along with Fleetwood (drums, percussion), John McVie (bass) and Christine McVie (lead singer/songwriter/keyboardist) - referred to as the Rumours 5.
Their biggest selling album Rumours (Grammy 1977 album of the year) is still on the Billboard charts and according to CSPC the 4th biggest selling album of all time. Though they had 5 other multi platinum albums.

Hi BP. Yes, Fleetwood Mac is worth your time. All 5 band members are very talented. 3 of them have taken lead vocals, at one time or another. The 3 are all song writers. Stevie Nicks, (lead vocals), Linsey Buckingham (lead guitar, vocals), Christine McVie (piano, keyboards, other, vocals)., John McVie (bass, Christine's ex husband). Mick Fleetwood (drums, percussion). Stevie & Lindsey are ex bf/gf as well. Mick had quick affair with Stevie. Christine had an affair with someone affiliated with the band. Stevie & Lindsay were breaking up. Christine & John getting divorced. And, Mick splitting with his wife. All this turbulence lead to one of the best albums of all time. Rumors. Unbelievable emotions in that album. Many of the songs about the couples splitting up. Any song from that album is great. Dreams, The Chain, Go Your Own Way, Gold Dust Woman, Never Going Back Again, Don't Stop (very upbeat), You Make Loving Fun, Don't Want to Know, and Songbird. Some have said Rhiannon, live on Midnight Special 1976. (Yes! A must). You'll see why. Also for great guitar playing by Lindsey, I'm So Afraid and Big Love. They are great live. Any song. They had a terrific performance, live, in 1997. A reunion tour for new album The Dance. Search Fleetwood Mac the Dance, the show will come up. You can use that for many of these songs. They were ong their game that night. In fact, two more songs, from that show are a must. Landslide, & Silver Springs( check out the emotion pouring out of Stevie...she is singing about Lindsey, who is right next to her.). It's Incredible! 🙂

The room she sings about "to a room with some lace and paper flowers"..... In an interview she said she and Lindsay were living in a flea bag place. Matress on the floor. She'd decorated the bedroom with those lace shawls she'd become famous for and big paper flowers she'd made from tissue paper. She was working usually two jobs at a time while Lindsay was gigging and writing music. She basically supported both of them
***Fast forward 2-3 yrs. He gets invited to join FM. He tells McVie and Fleetwood only if Stevie can join, too. They said yes without meeting her*** So begins the magic of FleetwoodMac. LB knew how talented SN was. Also, he repaid her support for all those years

    • @caps689
      @caps689 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Some of that is true - most of it is Stevie re writing history and growing self mythologizing. About their time in L.A. - the most recent interview I read about it she was up to 3 jobs for 4 years - while "Mr Useless" laid around smoking pot all day. They weren't even in LA for a full 3 years before joining FM. But if you've read her earlier stories - outside of music she only worked part time for a few months in 1974 (after Polydor dropped them) with a few odd jobs before that for extra cash - while still getting money from her parents.
In 1972 they moved out to LA on the bulk of Lindsey's 10k inheritance from an aunt and a dozen or so demos they recorded at his father's Coffee Plant (on equipment he bought with part of the inheritance) when he was ill for a year and had moved back home. They got their record deal in 3-6 months for 30k with 5k each going to Lindsey & Stevie. To put that money in perspective - rent in LA then was about $100-125 a month. For extra money they both did odd jobs and Lindsey did session work while also working on their music and later their album as arranger & music director as well as a musician, singer/songwriter. Stevie wrote to her Mom she was bored in the studio with little to do (nothing much has changed) Mr Useless worked far more on their music than she did but always split it 50/50 even when they first entered FM. He'd been making $400 a week on the road with Don Everly in late 1974 and FM first offered them $400 and it was split $200 each. Lindsey believed they could make it as a duo (and considering all their solo songs on the White Album were BN songs he was probably right) but Stevie was tired of struggling and jealous she didn't get to go out on the road (and had made that deal with her father of going back to school in 6 months) - so he said yes if Stevie could also join. He did it because he loved her and he'd always supported her music & believed in their partnership - not because he owed her anything.

The Chain, Go Your Own Way, and Silver Springs from 1997 The Dance Tour will give you a well rounded view of Fleetwood Mac. They had a ton of relationship drama within the band. Stevie and Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham were together before they joined the band and then broke up and wrote a ton about each other. Taylor Swift writes songs about her ex. These mofos make each other sing them. It's next level.

I also remember the early Fleetwood Mac from the 1960s with Peter Green, some great songs, including 'Albatross', 'The Green Manalishi' and 'Oh Well'.

I actually had her pull up next to me when I lived in Scottsdale, Az. My car window was down and one of her songs was playing on the radio. I was singing along at full volume (I can't carry a tune in a bucket) and something made me look over to my left out the window and there she sat with a smile from ear to ear, giving me a thumbs up. Then the light turned green and her car turned left while I went straight. Most memorable moment of my life.

Lyrically, "Gypsy" recounts the narrator’s early adulthood; before joining the group, Nicks lived with Lindsey Buckingham, who would also join Fleetwood Mac. Nicks and Buckingham were musical and romantic partners; however, only their musical partnership has survived. At that earlier time they barely got by with the income from Nicks' work as a waitress and cleaning lady.
They could not afford a bed frame, so they slept on a mattress directly on the floor. Nicks says the mattress was decorated in lace, with a vase and a flower at its side. Whenever she feels her famous life getting to her, she goes "back to her roots," and takes her mattress off the frame and puts it "back to the floor" and decorates it with "some lace, and paper flowers."
On 31 March 2009, Nicks gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly discussing the inspiration for the song:
"In the old days, before Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey [Buckingham] and I had no money, so we had a king-size mattress, but we just had it on the floor. I had old vintage coverlets on it, and even though we had no money it was still really pretty... Just that and a lamp on the floor, and that was it-there was a certain calmness about it. To this day, when I'm feeling cluttered, I will take my mattress off of my beautiful bed, wherever that may be, and put it outside my bedroom, with a table and a little lamp."
On 25 March 2009, during a show in Montreal, Quebec on Fleetwood Mac's Unleashed Tour, Nicks gave a short history of the inspiration behind "Gypsy". She explained it was written sometime in 1978-1979, when the band had become "very famous, very fast". It was a song that brought her back to an earlier time, to an apartment in San Francisco where she had taken the mattress off her bed and put it on the floor. To contextualize, Nicks voiced the lyrics: "So I'm back, to the velvet underground. Back to the floor, that I love. To a room with some lace and paper flowers. Back to the gypsy that I was." Those are the words: 'So I'm back to the velvet underground'-which is a clothing store in downtown San Francisco, where Janis Joplin got her clothes, and Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane. It was this little hole in the wall, amazing, beautiful stuff-'back to the floor that I love, to a room with some lace and paper flowers, back to the gypsy that I was.'"
The second point of inspiration for the song is the message as a tribute to someone's passing. On 5 October 1982, Robin Snyder Anderson, Nicks' best friend, died of leukemia. So the song took on a new significance for her, and Nicks dedicated the song to her in future performances.

this song written by stevie nicks tells of her yearning of her past before her success with fleetwood mac. "gypsy" represents though a more struggling time, she had more freedom ("...back to the gypsy...that i was...).
the true beauty of this song is the gorgeous arrangement, musical flourishing (specifically the almost dancing-sounding embellishment of the guitars to the vocal) by the enormously gifted lindsey buckingham. this song would NEVER have sounded as magical without him ❤

Fleetwood Mac was originally a blues rock band formed by Peter Green in the mid sixties. Try the songs "Oh Well" and the melodic "Man of the World" among many others. Peter Green and various band members came and went until about 1974. During this transitional period, the band started becoming less blues, more pop rock. Check out songs like "Hypnotized" and "Sentimental Lady", again, among many other good songs.
The core remaining members in 1974 were Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bass), and Christine McVie (keyboards, vocals). Mick Fleetwood was looking for a lead guitarist, and found Lindsey Buckingham. Lindsey refused to join the band unless they also hired his then-girlfriend "Stevie Nicks" as an additional vocalist.
In a nutshell, the addition of Lindsey and Stevie led to superstardom for the band, especially following release of the album "Rumors" in 1977. Every track on it is a hit!!!
