    Hi everyone! I have to correct one of the statements in the video: during the last guitar camp someone checked with Tommy about putting jumbo frets in his guitars, and he responded that that is not true! I don't make things up for my videos and had read that piece of information somewhere, but I feel have to correct it to make sure that no one goes ahead and pulls all the frets out of their guitar!

      Actually Tim, Tommy did an interview I don't remember what one but he said he did have a guitar that he changed the frets on it. Anyways lol I don't think tommy remembers himself 😂

    Apart from the beautiful story, this is advice that goes straight to what actually matters, and provides evidence for it.
    It should be viral among acoustic guitar players.

    Tim's comments on how tommy's guitars are set up is really interesting. I played a Maton guitar that one of Tommy's opening acts had set up exactly like Tommy had his guitars set up. The action is unbelievably low, much lower than any other acoustic I've ever played. Really interesting 5 tips. Thoroughly enjoying your TE lessons. Just sent you a tip. You deserve it, Tim.

    Loved your story on Tommy and yourself, theres something special about you Tim, great player great teacher ,your such a relaxed dude ,a lot of guitar players don,t realise,that you have to be at a certain level to play Tommy,s stuff, Chet too, I mean to play it well and on stage,Im not a teacher but a player, who just happens to play many of Tommy,s songs, Its all about regular practice, practice & more practice ,and it will come, I know, I take my hat off to you Tim wow,, on the same bill as Tommy,I think by the look on your face your dream maybe came true, you deserve it man you really do ,I can see you put the work and hours in, I met Tommy when he was unknown here in Western Australia aged in his early thirties for $10 , he said the short cuts are at the butchers shop ,not with the guitar, he was a fabulous player then, well done Tim, all that hard work paid off David.

    • @TimVanRoy
      @TimVanRoy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sometimes look up really old TE videos from when he was still playing in Australia only. He was indeed a phenomenal player already, but it really struck me how much he still managed to improve through his 40s and 50s! A lesson to us all!

      Great to hear Bryan! Especially the tips on how to set up your acoustic are of major importance. I have had a lot of students in this style by now, and most of the time it turns out the guitar they are playing is just too difficult to play to have any real chance of success!

  • @JonasCraftUltimate

    Wish I knew this sooner. Haven’t been able to play in 3 weeks because of really bad tendonitis 😭I miss it so much.
    When I can start again I will lower my action, probably change to 11’s, and start playing with Tommy Emmanuel technique I learned from this vid. Thanks for the tips

    • @TimVanRoy
      @TimVanRoy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If that tendonitis was a result of playing the guitar then you REALLY need to lighten up your technique! Playing the guitar should never hurt (at least in terms of muscle pain). I really hope you manage to get through this!

    Wow Tim , you are great . I love your site . I wish I had found you a long time ago . I am 78 years old and watched Tommy E. , Doyle D. , Chet A , and Travis and a lot of other fingerstyle guitar pickers about 2 years and started to learn fingerstyle. You are the first one that I really love. You talk slow and are very very good to explain the art really good. I can't believe you played for Tommy. That has to be a gift from GOD. Wow. I am going through his class right now but I like yours better. He's to fast for me. Hahaha. I'm catching on somewhat but have no one to play for or with so I do not know if I'm any good or not. Hahaha. Keep up the fantastic job of teaching us. Thank you sooooo much. Dick.

    I am only 3 years into my guitar journey... but I have discovered that playing acoustic amplified and with a microphone is so completely different than playing without, that I almost always practice with full sound for weeks before any performance I have. Such a good tip. Remember the encouragement from Tommy when you are the mentor/master... and pass it on to the next generation :)

    Thank you for sharing that story. I have always used a lot of force when I play, probably from busking in my early years. I am going to try to lighten up the touch, play slower, and make it easier to learn these tunes I am working on. Your tutorial on Angelina is the best one I have found. Very thorough.Thanks again, Thomas

    I’ve started to learn Tommy’s song since last year, been looking for ways to learn and your channel has helped me in that quest, this is the best channel to learn finger style songs in my opinion, thank you. I must say, I’ve only came across this video today in Oct 2021, but this is the best video I’ve seen on how to learn to play TE’s songs, and the story is so amazing and the way you share is so humble and genuine, so thank you for all you do.

      And to me it's amazing that I can tell stories to another Aussie about TE that you haven't heard before! The channel is going to expand quickly into other artists as well, but Tommy will always be the biggest inspiration of my (acoustic) guitar playing life!

With that background, I tend to subconsciously evaluate others' teaching/presentation skills, and I can be hyper-crtitcal. I don't try to do that, it just happens automatically. Quelle histoire incroyable!

    Tim, sorry I'm late to the party. This is an excellent video. I'm a UK guitar teacher in my mid-60s, and the advice you offer here is invaluable. I spend so much time in lessons just trying to get students to adopt some/all of the habits you mention - eg keeping wrists and arms continuously relaxed, using the lightest touch possible on the fretting hand, building playing speed gradually, etc. For some students I even spend the first 10 minutes of a lesson guiding them through a brief mindfulness meditation that focuses on the physical aspects of playing, and I recommend that they do it at home each time they pick up their guitars. Anyway, I'll be recommending your channel to all my students in the coming weeks, so you might pick up a few new subscibers/contributors. Please keep doing what you do, and good luck with the remainder of your music career.

      And don't hesitate to set the metronome to "double time" (aka clicking in eight notes instead of quarter notes) if it helps you to keep time better. 40 bpm is really hard to follow because it is so slow!
