  • In this video we are working on getting the rack sync, fuel setting and injector height done, with some of the right tools. We will get it to work even without the right tools. @AdeptApe on Venmo or AdeptApe@yahoo.com on PayPal for donations, thank you so much for supporting the channel!

I recently took a 3116 MUI fuel system class, we did all of these adjustments (luckily we weren’t missing tooling). But afterwards the instructor showed us how to fine tune the synchronization even further with the engine running, utilizing a temp gun on the manifold and slightly tweaking the sync screws balancing the temperatures. Slightly tweaking the screws with it running is kind of an interesting challenge. Anyway I thought it was a great class as I had no experience on these.

Every time I heard a truck with a 3116 idling it sounded like crap. This would be why. There would have been a lot of people just swapping out injectors without refinishing the seat or setting the injector rack measurement. It was rare to hear one run this smooth. Good job, this was a great video!

I only thought my wife was complicated🤣. Years and years ago, at Ryder I worked on Detroits and Cummins. This has got to be the most convoluted over head procedure ever. Thanks for the video. Good job

I used to do these at least once a week. The more you do them, the easier it gets. Even though they're synched the same, you sometimes have to fine tune them while they're running for smoother operation. MRC makes a great tool group that makes it a lot easier than the CAT Group. Fun times 😅 👍.

Same with the old 8.2 Detroit, set them all with the dial guage then sometimes you had to "cadalac" one or two.

I’ve never used the two indicator setup. We had the the block setup. It always seemed like there was misfire and it would be #1 what you set them to. So I just started doing them by ear and they always ran better.

Great job on the video, wish it was available 30 years ago. Had a bunch of 3126's with this MUI setup. Cool thing is they did 475 horsepower at 2950-3000 rpm. Many times I encountered people struggle with this procedure and sadly they dealt with the complicated instructions and lack of tooling by pulling the engine and swapping it with a ready spare... serious! US Government at its best! Great job again!

Ah the yellow, reversed, 4-stroke, backwards Detroitish fuel system haha! While at Cat I was surprised as I actually got pretty decent working on these, however we also had the same exact BS going on in the tool room. That used to make me furious. I sure hope they didn't give you any crap over meeting the SRT on that job Matt ☠️☠️☠️ Thank you for sharing a great video on a complicated job 👍

Electronic injection is so much nicer to work on. There's sensors already installed everywhere where you'd need them, instead of hooking up gauges manually, they're all acessible through a scan tool and if you need more details, like cylinder or injector contribution - just backprobe CKP or rail pressure sensor respectively with an oscilloscope...

Thanks for a good video on the adjustment. I have a 3116 in my 95 m1078 army truck its good to see how its done. At some point in the future I am going to get the fuel governor from the 290 hp and the turbo and adjust my injectors accordingly. Thanks so much. When I had my cam out I adjusted injector height with a dial caliper and it was a royal pain but it worked out well.

I'm thinking injectors should come with offset specs to really balance them out. Like most modern electronic injectors need to be coded which contains the offset information for that injector. Also most ECU can do their own learning and correct injection for every single injector

Hey Josh ,just a quick story, the outfit i was working for bought a chip spreader just like the one your working on, first season with it it always smoke black when throttling up or pulling a grade hooked to a truck,we called dealer in Pocatello and they said run it, i hooked to a truck one day on a steep adverse and throttled up to 2k and it went ballistic dont know how many Rs it went to but i had an oil distributor in front of me and pulling a loaded 14 yds truck , the distributor seen me coming and got out of my way, and with the johndeere running gear with good big brakes i got it stalled and had truck behind me set his brakes pulled rubber boot off air cleaner and got my lunch pale on it and it finally shut down , oh i had shut fuel shut down switch off to, called Cat out of Kalispell Mt , i helped mechanic pull it ,only took a couple hours and he took it too their shop, 3 weeks later we got it back and they said they couldn't find any damage or wrong. Ran great after that with no black smoke, ended up being a warranty cuss fight with dealer , cat and contractor ended up footing the bill, it was kinda wild sitting on there for few seconds

Man I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to alter, adapt or build a tool to do a job mostly because I’m a one man show. As far as the missing tools go I’d look at someone who just left or is getting ready to. I imagine that tool is several thousand dollars and to start your own business it would be nice to have. Anyways as usual I loved the video.

mucho graciass. What kits..... would have a base and dial indicator usable as a second one for rack adjusting? I have the old school full kit you were missing. But having back up system with less parts to do the job would be awesome. Not having to buy a whole nother large kit to just get an indicator and base would be foolish too, if another kit with less stuff involved thus less costly would have that as part of it.. Oh and your missing one... that has the proper fork in it right? (it is not in front of me to look)

  • @mikemorse8592

You often hear from people that the old mechanical diesels are easier to work on. I’ve always thought this was misguided. The more control a computer has to adjust timing quantity of fuel or any other part of injection, it makes for that much less mechanical fidely bits. Show a novice this procedure then show them changing an injector on most any common rail. A fuel connector a bolt an a electrical connector and it’s done

I’m working on an old 3116 powered generator . It idles high . If I turn the idle adjustment screw down the engine will shut down slowly . I can get get it to idle without shutting down but it idles at 1300 rpm . Would adjusting the overhead solve this or do you think it’s a problem in the fuel pump .

My first exposure to Detroit was a v16 71 running a gen set. The contractor had 2 in a trailer that needed a tune up .I was an operating engineer apprentice mechanic and the journeyman that was doing the job put me on one and he did the other (he spent more time watching and helping me than it took him to do his).
