Especially if you were one of the leading stars. He drove George C. Scott to near insanity, nearly blinded Malcolm McDowell, mentally abused Shelley Duvall & gave Tom Cruise an ulcer (last one here a slight joke)

The upside of working for Kubrick: you'll be amazing and unforgettable on screen.
The downside of working for Kubrick: he'll drive you insane while you're working with him.
Is it any wonder not a single actor starred on more than one of his movies?

One of my favorite fun facts between the movie and the book: “Come play with us, Danny,” is in the book, but the twins aren’t in it. In the book, it’s a disembodied voice coming from cement tubes in the hotel playground. It comes after an intense scene where Danny crawls around in them and snow traps him. Also, while “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” isn’t in the book, it IS in “Pet Sematary.”

Shelley Duvall is great in this film. One great piece of acting with convincing emotion is where she goes to lift up the bonnet of the snowcat when planning her escape, and pulls out the dismantled engine part that Jacks destroyed and holds it to her chest. The look on her face and the emotion she gives is so naturally convincing, it really is that of a woman mentally desperate who could just cry. This is when as a viewer you really feel for her situation. Great acting

With regards to Crothers' death scene, Kubrick had him shoot take after take of it until Crothers finally yelled at Kubrick "What do you want from me?!?" Nicholson had to step in before it got worse...

I mean, I liked the first Silent Hill movie which was admittedly terrible and heavily deviated from the source. Hell, I love all the new Star Wars movies which the fandom seems to despise and heavily breaks from the original established canon. What I'm trying to say is, I give movies a chance and I try to judge them fairly beyond the initial reaction. That, and I'm generally more positive when critiquing. Good stuff! Watching this 'explanation' suddenly made me realize Kubrick's use of people throughout The Shining. When Jack first arrives, there's obviously guests staying there still, but are hardly noticeable. As Jack and family return, and guests and staff are leaving - they're noticeable - but almost ghost like. And for the packed Gold Room scene, it's like everyone SHOULD be there. Always been there, always will be there. And I'd say what Kubrick did at the end with the balloons, odd characters appearing, and dead corpses sitting around emphasizes that 'the guests' of past have permeated the hotel into a sustainable dimension. And this isn't to say all the guests past and present were murdered there, or committed suicide there, or died accidental deaths there. But it's like ALL our memory of either a perfect time in our lives, or the most frightening times. And dawns on me now - I don't think many of us regard 'people' in those visions. We remember what the church looked like where we got married, the funeral homes where loved ones were viewed, the historic and opulent hotels we stayed at, and vistas of landscapes and oceans and sky we looked upon. Same with frightening moments - the edge of the cliff we almost fell from, or was nearly pushed over, the car almost hit, the alley and smell where we were mugged or raped. But I think we don't rarely recall people in those memories. And if we do, it's either a perfect snapshot of their happiness with us, or the sheer look of malevolence that could be imagined. And I don't think one has to be a psychiatrist to know that those images we hold onto warp over time. The wife had this glow around her in Hawaii, the husband looked like a king in the church, the mugger had what seemed to be fangs jutting out, the bellboy at the hotel in Venice had a crazy eye that was almost hanging out of it's socket.... Yuck! So I think that's what Kubrick and/or Diane Johnston may have been going for at the ending? Where do those memories go when we die? Back to the hotel - be they fond or bad memories there. One persons 'heaven' could just as easily be another persons 'hell' - Forever, and ever, and ever....
