As always, fantastic course and thank you for sharing your knowledge!! I'm really interested if anyone can tell me about the different social structures of pre-occupation Nahuatl speaking groups. For instance, the Aztec were very hierarchical and imperialistic, but I've heard Tlaxcalan was a more participatory, consensus-type democracy. Most of the groups I tend to think of as "democratic" are from Maya regions (post-classical, as scholars like to call the time period), but I don't know much about the history of other parts of what's now Mexico. Anybody have any information?
Ive read the same thing, in The Oxford Handbook of the Aztecs

@@thenahuatlchannel3896 Thanks for the corrections! I even noticed the wrong pluralization, but somehow YT glitched & I couldn‘t edit or delete this message, hm.
Has „machtiā“ taken on the meaning of *only* „to teach“ and not also „to learn“ in Wāstekan Nāwatl? I tried my hands at some classical here, so here it should also be able to mean „I learn“, so the reflexive „I teach myself“ isn‘t necessary.
I just started with this modern dialect, your videos are great, thank you so much! Does this dialect though not feature vowel length?
There is vowel length but it hardly matters for 99% of words , and context tells u the other 1%,
Its the same as in other varieties, for example
Nikmachtia = i teach him
Nimomachtia x = i teach myself, i study x...

Thanks for your awesome lesson, always wanted to learn the language of the Mexica people. As someone who speaks Mandarin, knows some Tai-Kradai, and also knows a few words in Korean and Japanese I think Nahuatl is somewhat more similar to Northern Asian languages (Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean) rather than Southern Asian languages (Tai-Kradai, Austronesian, Hmong-Mien, and Austroasiatic). Take the word "Notsontekon" as an example, in Mandarin this would be "Wo De Tou", where Wo means I or me, De is a possessive particle a bit similar to the De in French and Spanish, and Tou means head. The general word order is similar, the modifier comes before the noun it modifies.
In Southern Asian languages such as Tai-Kradai, Hmong-Mien, Austroasiatic, and Austronesian, the modifier is placed after the noun. For instance in the Cuengh language (a Tai-Kradai language spoken in South China), my head would be "Gyaeuj Gou", where "Gyaeuj" means head and "Gou" means I or me.

I'm confused about something: You have 'kwekwetstsin' for small but you have also 'echkapantsin' for short (height).. When is 'kwekwetstsin' used in a sentence when its not about height?..Is it about size? And you talked about everything about the face only not the mouth ,so what would 'my mouth' be in nahuatl? Tlascamati!
My mouth - nokamak
Yep! echkapantsin is about height specifically
Piyali! I love your channel and wanted to ask you about a video i found. I forgot a lot of my spanish when i moved back to the US but lately learning a song i like in spanish has helped me a ton better and regain my pronunciation. this being said i wanted to ask you if this song has reliable translation because i am currently trying to learn it to better my nahuatl pronunciation. I’m excited to recognize which words in the nahuatl lyrics are the verb by looking at the modifying “ni” and “xi” which in turn is teaching me the words for “pass away” “be sad” “smile” and “send”. this is the song in question and i’d love your feedback. thank you so much for the work you put in these lessons. i hope to be able to fluently express myself in your comments section in nahuatl one day :)
the link to the song
th-cam.com/video/m1HKUZe__iY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=c6fXrDkLzXYienm0
Yeah thats a reliable song, its actually a poem written by a nahuatl poet, i think natalio hernandez, and turned into a song by lila downs
In regards to adding -tsin to add a level of respect, would we be dropping the suffix portion each time if applicable? IE: Siwatl --> Siwatsin and Siwapil --> Siwapiltsin? Tlaskamati
Just like u did is correct
Keniwki moillia "Light" itsonkal wan "Dark" itsonkal? No, keniwki moillia "skin"?
How do you say "Light" hair and "Dark" hair? Also, how do you say "skin"?
You would say a- to mean watered down, or light,
Ayayawik - light black
Akafentik - light brown
Dark black is just black - yayawik, or say nelliya yayawik - truly black
Skin is

Kwekwetstsin. When you pronounce it, it sounds like kwekwetsin.
It makes no difference in pronunciation but the root word is kwekwets- and then it has an extra -tsin

Michi is a nickname for cats in mexico. Im not 100% on its origin, if its from mistli or just a common nickname , but michin with an n would be fish
