    The shotgun's one-shot ability was a necessary component of the sword-shotgun-hammer triangle. Without that, it cannot effectively compete with these weapons and immediately looses it's purpose as an effective counter option.

    Infinite’s focus on situational weapons has caused a number of weapons to often feel impractical for players who like to be combative rather than supportive. The disrupter, ravager, plasma pistol, pulse carbine and hydra are support weapons that allow less skilled players to either weaken or finish off already damaged enemies. The previously mentioned weapons aren’t very practical for direct combat. Thus, I good chunk of infinite’s weapons can simply be ignored by players who are skilled with the starting weapons.
    Additionally, the bulldog and commando are two weapons that I don’t see much use for. The bulldog has the issues you highlighted in the video. While the commando has an emphasis on recoil management, making it more cumbersome to use than the AR, Sidekick and BR. The commando often doesn’t have much advantages over the starting weapons. The BR, sidekick and even assault rifle can beat the commando at close and medium range, while requiring less recoil management.

      Command needs to get back to its state from open beta where it was simply amazing in both close, mid and long-range, something really worth picking up everytime you saw it just like BR.

    I dont think thats what people mean when they talk about "sandbox redundancy". Like, sure, the utility precision weapon and the sniper rifle like to click on heads, but the sniper's stats are skewed so extremely that it justifies its place in the game. In the same vein that the rocket launcher trades projectile speed and magazine size for powerful splash damage, the sniper trades magazine size, versatility, and rate of fire for high potential damage, provided the player is precise.
    What people mean about "redundant" is how in Halo 2, the beam rifle was basically a purple sniper rifle, and didnt offer a unique enough experience to really warrant its existence.

    I really hope the pump shotgun comes back when Infection releases. The Bulldog would have a weird relationship in the vanilla version of the gamemode.
    It has too much range compared to the pump shotty so would we have to give the infected some level of shields to offset the Bulldog's longer range?
    If we did that, then what about the Sidekick? If we give the infected shields to offset the Bulldog's range, then the Sidekick would lose the ability to 1 tap headshot Infected, which is a staple of the mode.
    Not saying that an Infection variant with the Bulldog wouldn't work, but vanilla Infection would have to see changes that would alienate players much like the new KOTH mode in Infinite doesn't play like KOTH, it plays like Strongholds or Territories, but with a single capture point.

    Finally someone else who said this, my biggest gripe with the shotgun is the low ammo count especially when you play campaign, why would I carry a shotgun that only has 28 rounds in total whereas in other Halo campaigns we could carry more, not to mention the lack of one shot kill too

  • @LordEmpyreal
    @LordEmpyreal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The Bulldog generally pulls off a 3 shot kill in medium-close quarters, which is around 0.9s, with the ability to two tap of the dice are in your favor for 0.6s, and even a suboptimal 4 shot kill is 1.2s.
    The AR optimal TTK, which requires every single bullet to land and the final 3 to all be max-bloom headshots, is 1.37s.
    The Bulldog player can literally miss half their shots outright and still down a player faster than an AR up close. And that 3-4 tap range is pretty darn deep.
    It also doesn't rely on slow moving projectiles like the Heatwave, meaning there's no movement guesswork, just fire when your reticle is on center mass.
    It's a plenty competent weapon.

  • @hydb801

    I think it would be weird to have a faster fire rate but weaker bulldog. They would need to change its sound and animation because it already does less damage than it feels like it should, so it being even weaker would be an even larger disconnect. I do think that 343 will introduce weapons that have sandbox overlap. Also the hydra in non tracking mode is kind of like a mini rocket launcher that takes 3 shots instead of one.

    I finally figure out why i feel cheaped out when playing fiesta besides when I’m given a plasma pistol and pulse carbine against power weapons, the only way the plasma pistol can remain the way it is now is if dual wielding is reintroduced but like that will ever happen

    • @LeMicronaut
      @LeMicronaut 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wonder how things would've been if only plasma weapons were dual wielded, damage and recoil probably wouldn't have to be tweaked cause of the projectile speed already setting plasma weapons behind. Doubling the fire rate could make hitting distant enemies easier and allow suppressing corners. The overheat means you don't have to force long(er) reloads and require better feathering instead. You can also excuse changing more variables than with ballistics, which have more fixed expectations: always going to have the same clip size, damage per hit.

  • @Killer_Kurt

    While I definitely would like the classic shotgun to return, I don't have too much of an issue with the bulldog. I play mostly ranked so even the times it takes 3 shots to kill, I typically can beat a BR fight 1v1 with it. But I'll admit I don't know how it feels in social vs the AR all that much. And it does the 1shot beat down kill pretty consistently. I also like it more than the heatwave. I feel like with the movement of infinite, the heatwave punishes you more than the bulldog. And with the rockets in this game being meh, maps like streets and Bazar, if I get a bulldog I usually get a killing spree or at least get something going in the match. Going full auto sounds like another way for 343 to break the game haha. Idk if they'd be able to figure out the damage for it to not be op or absolute dog shit. I'd say just give us classic shotgun before any changes like that to the bulldog. Side note, halo 4 shotgun, will always love that thing, absolute unit. Anyway, just my thoughts. As for script or off the cuff, I'd say more off the cuff but maybe some guiding notes to help. If you do any more weapon analysis, I'm curious if you'd be able to explain the rocket launcher. Maybe not your domain but I've wondered this whole game what the splash damage looks like behind the scenes, because it feels like damage goes toward the shooter, hence why we've all had those times we die but the guy we were shooting at is somehow only no Shields

      Agree bulldog is solid but would just increase the range

    • @DarkLordDeimos
      @DarkLordDeimos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with basically everything you said. I only play ranked, and the Bulldog feels good in it. In fact I strongly prefer it to the classic shotgun. I hate how inconsistent it can be, where a point-blank shot doesn't kill, and the opponent can simply melee and shoot me in return, or kill me with a pistol/BR faster than a 2nd shotgun shot can fire. I also recently learned that for some reason, there is also a headshot bonus with the classic shotgun? A full shot to the chest doesn't kill, but a partial shot to the head does? Doesn't make any sense regarding its intended usage. The consistent 3 shot of the Bulldog, along with its greater range makes it a much more viable weapon overall. It can actually compete against loadout weapons, instead of simply being used to defend against the sword. Perhaps a slight increase to range OR fire rate would be helpful.
      Regarding your side note, the Halo 4 shotgun was not only awesome damage/range wise, but it also sounds amazing. Probably my favorite shotgun sound in any game.

    • @hydb801
      @hydb801 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So ryanoob on the competitive halo subreddit explained how rocket splash damage works so Ill summarize here. Basically the rocket launcher splash damage does like 90% damage and is somewhat large and the 100% damage area is somewhat small. What this means in practice is that if an enemy gets a few shots in you then you will die from the splash damage of a rocket that you shoot. So if you have rockets and an a enemy gets the drop on you in close range, it is best to just aim directly at the enemy and kill yourself as well instead of trying to shoot past the enemy and trying to kill him without killing yourself since you will die anyway. So you're risking the enemy not dying and you dying if you dont aim for direct impacts with the rocket. Also 343 said they are working on rocket launcher splash damage in a future update so this could change

    • @Rburke2331

  • @RednekGamurz
    @RednekGamurz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with almost everything you said about the Bulldog (except maybe giving it recoil), but I don't really understand your take on redundancy in the sandbox. Redundant weapons, from what I understand, are weapons that fulfill the exact same roles, like the sniper compared to the beam rifle, or the BR compared to the Carbine. In those cases, it's moreso a choice of preference rather than what might help you best in a given situation. Sure, Reach had a lot of launchers, but I'd argue each one fits it's own niche. The Rocket Launcher is great against vehicles in close to medium ranges, but it's slower projectile speed means it's a lot harder to use effectively at longer ranges. The grenade launcher is weaker, but it has some added utility, like it's EMP, or being able to make the projectile bounce around corners. The spartan laser is the ultimate vehicle killer, but it's long charge up time and tell-tell laser pointer makes it a bit trickier to use in close ranges without getting killed before you fire, etc. The Bulldog, Heatwave, and classic Shotgun all existing in the same sandbox wouldn't be redundant, because even though they're all shotguns, they have their own niche roles (at least if the Bulldog got it's suggested buffs, cause at the moment, as you said, the Heatwave currently does everything the Bulldog does, but better).

    It’s frustrating for me. Just like most of the new weapons in the sandbox. The shotgun was counter to the sword and the hammer could be pre-swung. An additional counter but still unique. Very few guns one hit kill now and respawn is 10 seconds now. Making it feel like the AR and pistol in my hands most of the time. Occasionally the rockets and sniper as well.

    Haven't played previous Halos, but I have to say Bulldog it's easily the best balanced shotgun I have ever seen in any MP game I got to play - usually it's OP/broken and one-shots everything until it gets patched and becomes totally iseless because youvdie before you even have a chance for 2nd shot, but thanks to Halo's high TTK youvdo have time to land those 3-4 shots. If only there would be loadouts in Infinite I'd most likely run with it most of the time.

    That was certainly an interesting take on Sandbox Redundancy! It's a different definition than the one I typically think of, but certainly a worthwhile and more positive take than how I often view the subject.
    My view on Sandbox Redundancy - and why I see it as a negative aspect - falls largely into a functional similarity case, where weapons that are 'clones' of others with few differentiating features tend to have a 'dulling' effect on the sandbox. Reach's Launcher Class wasn't redundant, because most of those had greater functional differences that served to let the weapons stand on their own. Rockets and Fuel Rods for example. While both were powerful, you can't quite cram them into the same exact role due to differences in their damage and projectile behavior. The FRG fit much better as an anti-infantry obliteration cannon while Rockets could wreck vehicles much more consistently due to a faster projectile, higher damage per round, and lock on capabilities vs Aircraft. At least in Reach it had that last bit.
    However the Plasma Repeater and the Assault Rifle were much more closely aligned with only minor mechanical differences in that the Repeater couldn't be reloaded and had ROF reduction as it got hotter, however both served the same purpose with roughly the same efficiency - that being the starter automatic of their respective faction, wherein neither was particularly notable when put next to each other save for the novel venting function the Repeater had at the time. Another good example of this is a hypothetical where the Brute Shot and Concussion Rifle were to exist in the same game - For consistency we'll say H:R. Barring the increased melee damage of the Brute Shot in H3, which I recall not being particularly noteworthy in the majority of cases to begin with, I'm fairly certain the two weapons were functionally identical in that they both served as physics-disruption type weapons that could cause a lot of chaos with light to medium weighted objects and vehicles. Basically anything with the weight scale of the Warthog or lighter would experience adverse physics from these things. To put both in the same game would yield a Sandbox Redundancy case, where both weapons are roughly interchangeable.
    That's the kind of 'Sandbox Redundancy' that I'm largely against, rather than what you described which I think fits better under the term "Power Hierarchy" that you used, which is more interesting and plays better into a more complex design philosophy. Hopefully I made at least some sense during that mini essay. XD

    The old shotgun has always been a problem in the sandbox, it breaks gameplay. Reason why it was banned in Halo 3 MLG and with the exception of maybe the needler it is one of the weapons that has seen more changes over each game.
    The Bulldog accomplishes both balance and fun. It doesn't break gameplay and it gives the user an advantage in CQC. I think the Bulldog is the best short range weapon in Halo history.

    The bulldog does suck its a bad shotgun. No games sandbox would make it good.
    The example you use just makes the gun worse. The game has no loadout selection and the Bulldog is the way it is. If there was a proper shotgun in the game with the Bulldog, why even go for the Bulldog? You'll just get out performed by other players with better feeling weapons. Mauler can fill the role of the Bulldog better.

    Bring back the OG Shotty give it 5 to 8 shots per pickup but make it a 1 shot kill at a max distance equal to the total distance the sword is allowed to lunge. This gives you a projectile type weapon to combat the sword and hammer within their respective range. This would allow the bulldog to fulfill the AA-12 type treatment as a spammy spread weapon. A cool new weapon type for the Covenant would be a needler type shotgun where it could super combine with a 3 to 4 shot at medium range or 2 shot perfect where all needles/pellets hit the enemy similar to the heatwave.
