    I definitely agree on the preference of the watercolour style seen in the original's official art. I at least wish they kept the character's official renders in that style, but it would have been cool to see something like that be applied to the game itself as well.

    Real talk, the ONLY thing I wish was different about Xenoblade DE was using the original color palette instead of desaturating it as they did. Comparing almost every location in DE to the original, the colors are significantly less saturated. I want to actually make a video on the subject. Xenoblade DE has vastly surpassed the original as my new favorite game of all time, but I do still wish they had kept the vibrant color palette.

I always get in arguments with Xenoblade 2 fans as someone who loved the original and hated 2, the art direction being a large part of that. Anime art directions almost always take me out of experiences because devs love putting them in realistic worlds for some reason and not worlds that match the anime aesthetic. I would have liked a more attempt at keeping the games visuals just a BIT more along the realistic style of the first game. Games like Xenoblade, Twilight Princess, the realistic artstyle of those games are just far easier on the eyes to me and something I dont think enough games do anymore.

    • @Chronoflation
      @Chronoflation 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Right!? It gives the games a visual identity of their own. Plus, the models had so much more detail, especially in the clothing, that just does not exist in the plastic model designs they used for DE. They're not as bad in game as I had felt with the previews and concept art, but it still feels like a massive downgrade to me, and now the characters feel like they could be from any other anime styled game. That totally feels like an art style lost to time.
      You should check out The Last Story if you haven't before. The art style feels like an upgraded version of Twilight Princess to me

      @@Chronoflation I totally agree and I think that look and identity is important cause it undeniably adds to the unique FEEL of the game. Those things matter and I wish DE did it because I love the original game but the faces are the exact same so it's a bit too distracting to me. As much as I wish the color palette and artstyle was more realistic, just a bit, I still think they do the characters great justice in how they're expressed and designed. Its ALMOST perfect for me but not quite. And I would love to play The Last Story, too bad I have no idea how to play that.

      @@stormcutter59 It's a Wii game from the end of its days. Never made it to the Wii U eshop, sadly, but, if you can find it online and have your old Wii or Wii U lying around, it's a fun experience, especially once you start leveling up and leaning new battle tricks (early game is basically all auto-attacks). And I agree that the characters express themselves far better in DE, the change in art direction just takes away too much for me. I think how other people feel about the faces in the original is how I feel about them in DE. All I see is "plastic anime figurine". Even the mechon sheen makes them look like toys to me. I hope they let the Xenoblade X games maintain their identity as the last bastion of that older, more realistic art style, but I feel like they're gonna do the same with the colors in X2 and make all the characters look like Malos. Not bad, he was my favorite 2 design, but color and texture-wise, I want X to at least keep the grittier look

    DE has the best design, and a more emotive fit for the animated scenes. With the OG, the only thing it has going for it is the contrast. It's less immersive as you know their faces are just painted on. This is amplified by how really basic the nopon face designs in the original were. I'd say Smash version is slightly better than the OG in this regard.
    In terms of costume design, they're all more or less the same but DE has improved textures.
    Art style-wise, that's very subjective. People have preferences. But I'm glad MS was happy with it and chose this in DE because the results are great.

    Personally I find that the new designs with the color they chose is the best fit for the look of the UI and the fonts in DE. The original had an "ancient looking" UI and the art direction was the best to match that, so I don't think it's really a problem.
    By wanting to expand the fanbase and making the original Xenoblade more accessible, they had to change "drastically" the look of everything in the game, models, UI, fonts, color palette, etc... Same for the Musics, each match best it's own game, DE's musics match better the new game and the original musics match best the original look.
    I think that way everyone can be happy.

    hey luxin, have you tried maybe writing a script? i know writing make videos longer to make but I really think it could help your videos. reading off a script could help with not sounding stuttery and having weird pauses. also you can make your talking more concise.
    let me make an example: 9:19 "part of this is probably stemming from the pokemon mystery dungeon remake, and how the visual style they went with for that was inspired by some of the official art of the original versions of the game.. and how while, yeah its... still pokemon character models from the past 3 generations but some of them have their polygons taken out, but the background art is really good, and well definitive edition models were a lot more.. higher fidelity than those so i kind of wish that they would have gone for.. in terms of coloring and lighting, i guess this would be all part of rendering, in terms of the way the characters are shaded and the way models are colored, i wish they went with something closer to the style they went with when they made this 2d official art because i like the way it looks"
    this whole diatribe is confusing because of how long and run-on it its. you talk about mystery dungeons visual style, how theyre character models with no polygons, stop to comment on the background art, compare the DE models, go on this tangent of a tangent about the terms of coloring lighting and rendering, then FINALLY wrap the thought up with saying how you liked how the style looked and wish DE would have been more like it. this whole thing shouldn't be one sentence, and just writing down what you say could help that a lot, even if they are just small notes.
    i guess another positive is that it is writing practice? since i presume you're a college student whos going to be writing a lot of papers.

Imho, the original Xenoblade 1 has more personnality to its designs, which is paradoxal because of the technical limitations, but it stands out more, style-wise, it feels more...gritty. That being said, the call for a more "anime" feel in DE is, still imho, a good one, because I can see it being much more timeless than the original which, to be frank, looks very dated. Could it have been closer to the original, with a filter, like you suggested, or a less saturated palette? Probably, but in the end, I'm just glad we only have nitpicks to talk about regarding DE, this is how a re-release should be, with not just graphical, but also UI and even game system modifications, but without changing the soul of the game.

    My big complaint for the art style change is that save the slightly bigger eyes on the younger characters (Shulk Fiora and Melia) and the nopon, all of the characters just looked like people and not cartoons. This is a personal preference, and mostly because I don't like how child like most anime style characters look. Shulk in the original just looked like a normal 16-17 year old kid, but in the new design I look at the big ol eyes and soft face and think this kid JUST got his dose of growth hormones, if at all. I specifically don't like that Reyn now looks like a highschooler at oldest, and is no longer brown.

    I personally hate the Xenoblade 2 color palette in Xenoblade 1. It was fine for 2, as the game was originally designed in that light, with a story tone that matches the brighter colors, but 1 was originally designed to feel more realistic, like a real world, so I feel like sticking with the original color palette or maybe even matching with X more would've been a good choice, but with that filter you mentioned.
    Regarding characters, some of the official artwork for the original game had a lot more detail to it and the clothing especially had more detail in the fibers and accessories, as well as having more natural folds and creases in how they would naturally fall on someone wearing them. The designs they used for DE ended up being much stiffer and feel like they were designed for merchandising purposes more than to look as detailed as possible. So I am not a fan of these character models for that reason. I don't like the changes to the eyes, or the lack of clothing detail that was so prominent in the original, even if the Wii couldn't output that level of fidelity in detail. That pseudo-realistic style is much more befitting the game than the updated designs portray. I honestly feel like the updates took the characters out of their realistic world and now it feels like I'm playing with anime characters in a real world instead of character from that world. The world has far more detail and the colors are far more muted and realistically done than any of the character or NPC models. I abhor when games do that and I have returned to playing the original Xenoblade rather than go through DE for that reason. Even if the updates they made to gameplay were great and help a lot, I cannot get over the visual updates that take me out of the experience every time I watch a cutscene. Animation may be better, but what good is that if the models themselves take me out of the experience?

      @Voltage, dragon guy Remember about people with wings on there head, which can fly, nopons, gigantic mechs using homs as a fuel, a literall gods, magical sword, and much more. How is it realistic?

    • @Chronoflation
      @Chronoflation 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Voltage, dragon guy A realistic art style doesn't mean that the creatures are realistic looking to earth. They're realistic within the setting. Besides, spider-monkey's effectively use their tails as a fifth limb, so it's not that out of reality. It's still fantasy, that doesn't mean the art direction needs to be so far off. Besides, I like Xenoblade characters looking more unique from other anime styled games. Sure, people complained about the faces in 1 and X, but the textures were never an issue, and the face problems mostly came from them being virtually expressionless. That's not an art style limitation though, it's an animation limitation.
      Let me put it in the most straightforward way I can. The way the original models having drawn faces on them took a lot of other people out of the experience of the original. That is how I feel about the more anime style for DE. It doesn't matter much for actual gameplay, but it takes me out of all of the cutscenes as the characters do not feel natural to the world they are in, to me. The characters feel like they're plastic in a world made from stone, so to speak. The original didn't particularly look good, due to the limitations, but I never for one second felt like, had the characters been able to be fully realized in the style that they were made in, that they would feel separate from their world. I could use my mind to polish the unrefined edges of the designs. DE has refined designs, but the refinements take me out of the experience instead of bringing me deeper into it.
