I've been told by my bullies not to be selfish. To give something I deserved to someone else. Being ugly sucks coz people will just ask you to cater to pretty people. Sad thing is my parents and my sister were also ashamed of me for being a dork. This scene is too real for me.
Do yourself a favor. Tell your bullies to go F--k themselves and stop being available to them. Find something you enjoy doing, (sports, arts, drama, etc) and you'll meet people that share your own interests. Good luck
Hang in there. I was an ice skater, a loner, not a pretty girl. I was a freak, then I saw the prettiest girl in my year when I was a theatre manager. She got fat with kids. She did not know me. I smiled. As I got older I mixed with famous performers and I was not the ugly girl anymore. The best people I ever met were the most talented but modest. I am still a lone wolf but I reinvented myself. All those miserable school days will fade and you will find yourself. Stay strong ❤
Question about that lady who ratted out Muriel (and later her Mom): I was wondering about this, especially towards the ending where the Mom put on those sandals and forgot to pay for them: I'm saying "forgot" because the poor lady always appeared to be in a mental fog and forgot she had them on, though I'm sure she meant to pay for them. And the lady that was watching her seemed to appear in moments where she could rat out either Muriel or any one of her family. Which had me thinking, was she spying on the family because of the father, who, I believe was a politician of some sort, and that lady just seemed to have it out for them? Just a theory. 🤷🏻♀️😄
That's interesting theory, I think it's very possible... If you notice, later in the movie, when Muriel's father is leaving his wife and asks for divorce, he blurts like "You know what they say? I lost at the politics because my family wasn't up to it!" This makes me suspect that the lady has been spreading gossip about them. And btw, I do trust in Betty's good faith too, I'm sure she would have paid the sandals, she breaks my heart...🥺🥺
A good theory but it could also just be standard small town bullying. i.e. they are not respectable as more of a pettiness towards them more than who the father is. They are not beautiful, sunburnt, physically fit, representations of what is advertised to be Australian. I think it is trying to emphasize the small mindedness and pettiness of the community. I am not sure if you are from Australia but this movie, despite it being a comedy with some outrageous dialogue, hits a little close to accurate. That scene with the girls discussing the bouquet of flowers and who deserves it. I have actually seen conversations like this go down.
I don't remember it ever being explained what happened to the guy's nose, or its relevance in being mentioned. It's important because this movie had the distinction of not wasting a lot of time on crap that didn't matter.

This is how Nicole and Tania’s husband Chook hurt Tania the most, thanks to Muriel who witnessed them sleeping together in the laundry room. Nicole and Chook, they’re snakes. 🐍
I’m impressed that the actresses pulled off their roles so convincingly; I understand very well the pain of being castigated and treated like a dead person; they’re acting so bringing that aura of being so disgusting to life was incredible
two - that Rose woman he hooked up with shortly after the wedding. Whom Tanya and co befriended after finding out 'she was just like us' and after Tanya slept with Rose's husband "and it made me realise, we all make mistakes'. And who knows who else between the fling with Rose and the end of the movie when Tanya decided to give her marriage another go 'Once Chook gets out of the correctional facility. They've accused him of raping a Japanese tourist which is just ridiculous, Chook hates the Japanese!" Think he might be a nymphomaniac or just an arrogant bastard? Or both?
Cheryl: Doesn’t mock Muriel as much as the others. Seemed more concerned than angry when Muriel followed them to the honeymoon. Tania: Spoiled and self-centred, but has some human moments (like thanking Rhonda for telling her about Chook) Janine: Constantly insults Muriel and then gaslights her Nicole: All around horrible person and homewrecker
No. Tania is being sarcastic when she "thanks" Rhonda and says she hopes she can do the same for Rhonda someday. It's her way of saying that Rhonda ruined her life by telling her the truth about Chook. She's not grateful at all.
KStarDid if you judge something from just a quick glimpse chances are you could miss out on something good. Muriel's wedding is actually a real good movie.
They treated Muriel like dirt and she didn't deserve it. She just wanted to fit in and be wanted. Which all humans do. Great film.
Who the fuck would want to fit in with them bitches
To all the Muriel's out there.....hang in there girls.
I'm trying... I need to move out of Porpoise Spit
Dont 'hang in there', Muriels: just FLY!

The funny thing is Muriel was the next to marry!
Yes they had to add the irony to make it a good movie no? 😆
Maybe Shane dumped Cheryl because he didn't want to spend the rest of his life with a "mean girl."
Except she married a professional swimmer for money and it didn't work out but she still got the money 😂😂
*That* look from Nicole though.... this scene has everything!
Pippa Grandison is an incredible actress, and she also played Muriel's mum in the stage version
I note how Muriel politely threw the bouquet to her “friend” who then rudely tosses it back to Muriel.

It is demonstrating the corruption of "respectability". If that makes sense. It is a bit like, "These are good people" but they are not really.
