For me... I am getting more from Mother than the TP revival. I did not expect to feel that way.
Been an appreciator of D Lynch going back to 1981, seeing Eraserhead in theater age 13 and took many hours to rewatch and dissect the new TV season on Showtime. Hadn't anticipated that Mother would make a more lasting impression on me.

However, many are going to hate it. Not because its a bad film, but because they just don't get it. And that's a valid opinion, this movie isn't for everybody.

Xervello Many here might disagree with me on this but personally, I felt this film to be pretentious and extremely heavy handed with its themes. It's surrealism ceases to have the effect good surrealism offers when you realize that every character and everything that happens has a direct allegorical correlation. By the time the film ended, I felt a feeling of pointlessness.
Basically what the film does is instead of just touching its nose normally, it twists it's hand around its head to touch it's nose, if you know what I mean.

The Fountain is Aronosky's least well reviewed film. It is also his strangest, so that shouldn't be a surprise. I didn't really dig Black Swan and I'm surprised how popular it is but I think mother! is great and a lot of people, including critics, think its unwatchable. There is no accounting for taste.

I think it was Rex Reed who called it the worst film of the decade. I wouldn't take anything Rex Reed says seriously though. He reviewed The Dark Knight badly because he said it didn't make sense that heath Ledger was The Joker when Jack Nicholson was already The Joker. (seriously, look up his review. Its hilarious.)
Kyle Smith did him one better. I think he called it the worst film Hollywood has ever made.

Aronofsky is very vague about the allegories he put in the film, “everybody sees what they want to see" .. on the other hand, we can see what he actually put in the film, every image, every word has been put in the film by him, not by chance. Jennifer can be seen as Mother Earth.. but also as the “working class”, adoring blindly their master.. endlessly working to make their house a real HOME, and are betrayed by him, who has hidden plans. She is dealing with a “Poet”, the “intellectual”, totally indifferent to her feelings and all her work in the house, looking for the excitement of weird people, looking for “inspiration” to overcome his sterility, his “writers' block”, pursuing his devilish plans He invites strangers into the house, and he tries to manipulate her when she asks him to send them away by saying “they have no other place where to go”. They destroy everything and he says "these are only material things". Everything goes tragically wrong and he says “it will be ok” … Mayhem ensues and he says "we must forgive". He is mocking the words and actions of "do-gooders", who open the door to the invasion by complete strangers, behind the mask of help and forgiveness... They turn a mourning wake into an orgy... are abusive, and try sexual advances followed by insults... We see her carefully choosing the plaster for the walls.. and “the guests” repaint the house of a totally different colour.. the allegory is quite clear... The sex that she was longing for is enacted by him as a rape... and then he sacrifices her child to his devilish sect, and here Aronofsky goes into dangerous waters... The Poet does everything to please and be worshipped by his adoring fans... gives the baby to the crowd to be devoured, in an echo of the Bible, but he is really the Devil or he knows the future and that everything will turn out according to his plans? so what is Aronofsky trying to suggest? God/Devil the same entity? At the end, she metes out justice and punishment by an all-consuming fire .. but then... smiling reassuringly he tears off her heart and starts again, and again and again, in a hint to Hinduist beliefs in life on Earth going through an endless series of cycles... Apparently, the film flopped because people find this message very unpleasant.. as it actually is… because it goes against everything we hear today through the mass media, but it will be considered “visionary” in the years to come…

A director who manages to get most of the way of sneaking this psychological thriller's deep significance past you, without you realizing it's an allegory.... is not doing it to be annoying; he's doing it to appeal to better angels in us, and it's good he is doing it. Yes, I am directly addressing Alonzo's distaste for the symbolism in this movie. What Aronofsky is doing is brilliant, in fact; he's delivering a lesson that will _wait before sinking in_ until we've already invested ourselves in the characters . And when he's both the director and the writer of the screenplay and has described it thus, why would you not want to believe the movie is intended just as he is describing? Bear with me: The house = Earth and its climate. Mother = nature (in its pure form, preferring to remain devoid of humans and their pernicious influence). Burning of the house = the damage done to it by the virus (humankind), or maybe it's the fever designed to kill off the virus.
Even the New Yorker film critics don't seem to get this movie, so I'm guessing the huge uptick of climactic chaos (via hurricanes, melting polar ice and rising seas among other things) has really taught us nothing.

Whenever Christy leans back she goes out of focus, and I'm not convinced the guy responsible for lighting was on his game today.

Woah, Christy you didn't get the allegory in this movie at all. I can't tell if Alonso did or not as he never goes into detail. It's one of those movies that if you understand it I think you really love it. If you missed what Aronofsky was going for then you probably didn't enjoy it very much.

I like the ideas in the movie, but it seems so garish after having just watched it. It puts a classic pollyanna in the classic monster movie freak-out for an extremely long time. And it accomplishes this extremely long time by repeating beats. At one point it felt like complete deja vu. Like the ramp up of horror was an exact repeat of what had already taken place. But it still does escalate in the end; to about as far as any first hand fantasy write-up of, "it all goes to shit," might render. The work that went into shooting, "it all goes to shit," must have been enormous. But the characters involved all seem like someone with writer's block churning out cliches one after another.
I could honestly say that the movie is really really bad. But it's bizarre and fundamental artistic qualities keep it interesting. I'm glad to give it my money, because Hollywood has beaten me so senseless with remakes and "blockbusters" that I'll pay for anything remotely out of the ordinary.
Last word: it's garbage. But The Killing of a Sacred Deer rules! Black Swan is the most recent good movie from Aronofsky imo.

It's sad how many people have no knowledge of one of the most widely spread book on earth, and are upset they have no clue to what this movie it's about, if you know even the most basic of the book stories will get this movie.

This was NOT a character movie. This whole movie was a HUGE religious allegory and I figured it was pretty obvious. I personally loved it because I caught onto this metaphor very early on so it eas weird because I wasnt surprised by how it ended up. I was like "oh okay I get it that makes sense" but then I would think "okay wait, narratively, what the fuck is happening..." but I was never confused because I understood the metaphor. Some may say that its on the nose and maybe it is but for this movie I liked its definitive way of thinking and its straight forward view of the metaphor that I actually really appreciated it and was instead thinking "okay so how is THIS going to be handled" and shit. I did just watch it like 30 minutes ago but yet I feel like I completely got it and I absolutely loved it. However I dont know how to rate it...

This movie was really straightforward in its religious symbolism, especially the book of Genesis. But really I'd saw all sorts of biblical symbolism. Yes it is a movie about many things: ecology, over-population, the creation process, religion, obsession with celebrity, the sanctity of life and the virus that is life. It's an important movie because it did try to tackle many things. And it got people talking, which is merit in its own right.
Yeah, I get why people won't like it. It is a big studio art house movie, plain and simple. That alone means that people are going to pigeonhole it as pretentious. Personally I loved it. It's not for everyone. And that's why there are Rom-coms and super hero movies for those times and people who just want to escape or be entertained. I want that too oftentimes. But I'm glad that every once in a while a Hollywood is willing to throw a frickin bone to those of us who occasionally crave something more reflective. I'm not saying this is the most profound movie ever, but I think it was successful in what it sought to achieve.

This movie with its chaos was fun. In addition to being an introvert's nightmare (relating to the aggravation of other people in your living space and screwing everything up while disrespecting and ignoring your wishes), it also works on society's obsession with oversharing and having an appetite for every detail and wanting a piece of everyone.
It didn't occur to me that the names of characters weren't spoken.
