Hi. I'm the one Terrarian out there who actually fell in love with sentries. Ballista is great, but 6 Electric Auras just sitting around you killing everything is just the best.
Nah, a couple armor boosted explosive traps near the portals and some flameburst spread around near both portals and the crystal gives basically afk power until the minibosses pop in. Or just boosted explosives on their own for other stuff is baller.
Explosive trap weapons have a great deal of value, especially the prehardmode one, because it doesn't detonate often, but each resummon resets its cooldown, so it's great for killing mobs behind walls in caves by clicking repeatedly, given that there's a platform for the trap to spawn on.
The fact Re-Logic made an additional sentry slot available in pre-hardmode is actually pretty huge for sentries overall. Probably one of my favorite changes LoL brought.
@@ChiefLogan_technicly 3 the dark mage drops the apprentice shield and scarf both which stack and do the same thing meaning you can get a total of 4 sentries as there isn't a potion
i did this challenge in 1.3- and boy can i tell you. 1.4.4 was a blessing for the sentry subclass. I would say the moon lord fight is harder now due to no longer being able to block the death ray, but overall this challenge looks as painful, tedious, and fun as always. I would recommend getting the frost hydra staff though-it recently got super buffed and is on par with ballista in my mind. works wonderfully in the OOA event due to its pierce and debuff! overall, great challenge and video!
oh, and personally I allow the dessert armors effect as a sentry. it’s an attack that scales off of your summon damage that doesn’t move so yk..also nimbus rods are okay by me, but some may disagree lol
I think 1.4.4 made some aspects much easier and others a little harder. Easier due to the changes to OOA making more than one sentry available pre-hardmode and harder as you can no longer spam sentries to get them to fire quickly. All in all a pretty balanced update for sentries which made them feel much more unique and well-rounded
You can direct sentries and summons by right clicking on enemies while holding the staff. That’s been the case for longer than whips have been in the game
surprised you didn’t go for staff of the frost hydra! it deals some extra frostburn damage and you can set them up before starting old one’s army and they won’t disappear
I think the Frost Hydra is useful for those who are playing Summoner without the Tavernkeeper's Set, which benefits specific Sentrys such as the ballista sets, electric aura, fireballs and explosive mines.
frost hydra is pretty bad unfortunately, compared to other sentries, especially since it requires so much farming. i hope they buff it in 1.4.5, maybe change its projectile to something like the chlorophyte set bonus with an ice beam that instantly hits, but still pierces twice. i think a large boost to its damage and perhaps attack speed would be quite nice.
Impressive; I didn't think you could beat Terraria only using sentries. So in my run, I included whips since they also benefit sentries and sentry-like weapons like the Nimbus cloud and Clinger Staff to increase damage output. Props to you!
Thanks! I wanted to avoid whips since you can beat the game with them alone as well, so I’d never know how much damage is coming from sentries and how much is coming from whips

@@ChiefLogan_ yeah, i get that. Cool challenge, but the slimy saddle deals summon damage and the shield of cthulhu deals melee damage so you should have used classless damage like explosives and boulders, that would have made more sense
I’d consider explosives and boulders more as weapons than mounts or accessories, plus if I allowed explosives early game I may as well use them much later as they’re better than most sentries all the way to early hardmode
You can probably do the prehardmode part without the Shield of Cthulhu, and it technically has a Melee damage class so I would disqualify its validity in a class challenge. Accidental damage from dashes are fine for me but I actively avoid dashing into enemies for damage when I play any other class to stay faithful to my damage class.
@@ChiefLogan_ It is indeed a miniscule amount of damage, but highlighting it as an additional source of damage in the video kinda puts it into more of a spotlight than it should have been. It's up for debate if using the dash's damage mechanics, albeit not the damage itself, in a class playthrough should be invalid though, for example if let's say you play a Summoner but rely on dashing into the Queen Bee's dashing patterns to avoid damage. Also I've never seen anything on the mounts' tooltips that classify their damage types into any of the classes, like the Unicorn and the slime mounts. Does it really fall under summon damage? If so, that's news to me.
Very enjoyable video, but, that wasnt sentries *only*. I do love the summoner class, however, and your playthrough ended up being much like my usual playthroughs with the exception of the building i do. Great vid. :)
I feel like a good rework pillars could get is to just make it a wave system that spawns in one place, so that you randomly go throughout all four pillars, instead of having to defeat one, go to another, beat that one, go to another, beat that one, go to another, there'd just be a rough spot on the map where they can spawn. It'd work so that once you defeat one, you get a few seconds of downtime to prepare (or leave to make given pillars gear, similar to before you defeat the last pillar and wait for moon lord to spawn), and whichever remaining pillars there are would spawn in at that given location after those few seconds regardless.
I say, using damage accessories to do the majority of the damage kinda invalidates the challenge imo. Also you don't need to start the challenge with the lava method, you can have your prep time using whatever else you want and it officially starts after you get your first actual weapon
Damaging accessories only did the majority of damage before I got access to the old ones army, from then on it was mostly sentries. I kinda did exactly as you described, but my “whatever else you want” was damaging accessories. Otherwise I couldn’t say I only used sentries for weapons
A lot different, it would mean you don’t have to mess around with things like lava and the slime mount, and could instantly go to take down deerclops for a “real” sentry
I understand using non-sentry damage when you have to in order to get the first possible sentry, but you just using all sorts of accessory damage, even after obtaining a sentry, defeats the point of the challenge completely..
I disagree, it’s not like I was going out of my way to use these accessories by maxing my defense and facetanking bosses. The majority of damage still came from the sentries for most bosses after the EoW
@@ChiefLogan_ So? That's like me making a melee only challenge but I finish the last 10% of their health with Guns. It’s not like that at all, weapons and accessories are very different. The only weapons I used throughout this run were sentries, which was my aim. This was good and I used this video as a guide, BUT, I also used whips since we use whips when doing summoner class (minions). I finished the run after a week, it was hell!
This video is so well done. Straight to the point and well-summarized. You deserve more views. I loved the idea of sentry-only playthrough, never had the time to try it. So thanks.
Thank you very much! I honestly wouldn’t recommend it for a playthrough, mainly because of the endgame section. Having to use tank accessories has never been too fun for me though
You know, if you're going to finesse the rules you set for yourself by allowing damage dealing accessories or armor, I'd rather you just say the challenge starts once you have the thing. It's kind of pointless to start from the point of "I'm only doing x" if you immediately violate that with a technicality.
Although I'm not sure if you were using it, the pre 1.4 summoner weapon only way to beat the wall of flesh would be to spam the ballista staff since it can shoot immediatly after you place it, so by placing a bunch you can "Rapid fire" the ballista I'm a sense
Finally The Old One's army gets used. Always hate how it's one of my favorites yet everybody avoids it. Sad the loot isn't as good either with some weapons really being useless. At least the war table gives an undeniable reason to do it. Especially in expert and master mode.
Yeah it’s pretty unique compared to other events in the game, I kinda wish the weapons/accessories were a bit better though, it’s mostly only useful for summoners
Slimy saddle isn’t a weapon, it’s a mount. I allowed it for this challenge because I was aiming to restrict my weapons to sentries only, anything else goes really
**rolls eyes** **adds challenge to list of Terraria challenges I need to complete** Just a heads up, from my experience, 9 times out of 10 the flame burst sentry is way better than the ballista sentry.
@@ChiefLogan_ yes, that and most of the damage coming from ballista staff comes from their ability to pierce. If you're fighting something where piercing is unnecessary then flame burst is better. Also, for any future runs with the old ones army event, if you place a platform about 40 blocks wide and 11 blocks above your crystal you can place flameburst sentries on top and they will automatically kill any of the flying creatures without fail assuming they are of proper level and you aren't below power for the tier. Really fun video btw and I will definitely be doing a modded sentry play though. Modded because I'd like to enjoy my time a little bit more lol. Edit: the floating platform needs to be made out of platforms and not solid blocks.
I would recommend using boulders, rolling cacti, bees, npc's, or lava to defeat deerclops as soon as possible because the shield of Cthulhu actually deals melee damage and the slime mount deals summoner damage.
The issue with allowing those is that they do too much damage, there wouldn’t be any reason to stop using these and use sentries instead until well into hardmode. At that point you may as well allow any weapons until obtaining a sentry, as it is unlocking sentries massively increased your power, however if you’d used boulders and cacti already then it’d decrease your damage
Fun fact: if you would've built your mech arena with walls, spiders would be able to climb on them, that's what I did when doing a normal playthrough so idk if the summon and sentry are the same
Unfortunately there’s no way to complete vanilla with only sentry damage, since there aren’t any sentries pre-boss. Using sentries as your only weapon is the closest you can get, allowing other sources of damage that aren’t weapons
You can actually cheese deerclop with minecart since its legs don't deal damage to player. Dig a hole the can fit two tables and place table in the hole side by side then place 4 tile of mincart track on it and hammer the mincart trackt to the bounce back one. You then place platform 6 tile above the tables. Finally, during the boss fight simply grapple the minecart track at the right moment to have the deerclop on top of the contraption then start the mincart ride and wait till the boos to die.
Now this raises the question, can you beat Terraria with only passive damage? No summons, no weapons, no traps or environmental damage (excluding lava solely to acquire the Slimy Saddle). Basically bone helm, star cape, etc.
back when sentries really became their own weapon class, with the old ones army being added, i DID figure out how to beat moon lord with only sentries. took me a couple attempts, but once i figured it out, it worked pretty reliably. props to you for doing it for the whole game though! that's definitely a lot more impressive
Something I figured out is that after the army ends, if you hold the Etherian Mana & start another OOA event, you keep that mana & get mana from the next event. Basically, you can get way more mana than you should, which is way more sentries.
@@ChiefLogan_ I meant clicking the Mana right before the event ends, you continue holding it. If you put it in a chest or inventory, it disappears. If you continue to hold it & right click the OOA pedestal, then you can put the mana back into your inventory without it disappearing. You can try it if you’d like.
I know this video is a bit old, but an editing tip is to create a mono audio track for 8-bit sound effects since those are usually mono and they're only in one ear in stereo
@@ChiefLogan_ For the mario bit you used some jumping / 1-up sound effects and they only played in the left ear. That usually happens when it's a mono audio clip in a stereo audio track so it just picks one end to play it on
you failed the challenge the moment you laid your eyes on that slimy saddle, it does summon damage, so it is technically a class damaging weapon, which is why you "could" use lava, so you know, just saying, that you did not 100% do it
I‘m surprised that you didn‘t go for the Clinger Staff. It spawns a column of cursed flames. I got it unintentionally in a regular playthrough and it helped a lot against the Destroyer.
Everyone comes up with their own rules for their playthroughs. A lot of people didn’t like me using accessories/mounts to deal damage before I got sentries
Problem is that the first sentry is locked behind a boss. And if we are 100% legit here, killing bosses using lava, mounts, traps, is no longer a sentry run. I wish they added an early game sentry...
Oh hey Moxus, love your videos btw! I was going for using sentries as my only weapon, which is unfortunately as far as we can go until a pre-boss sentry is added
@@ChiefLogan_ they just need to change the tavernkeep to spawn after breaking an orb/crimson heart, instead of killing BoC/Eow. That would fix the problem.
Im not so sure that would be enough, you need to defeat the OOA before you can use the sentries outside of the event, and defeating the OOA with only one sentry and no other damage sources is likely near impossible (at least in higher difficulties)
@@ChiefLogan_ Totally doable in expert mode. It's not just one sentry. You get extra every wave. The only hard part is beating the first wave. By wave 5 you get around 7 sentries and can resummon them when needed.
It’s the first wave that I’m worried about tbh, I just don’t know if sentries would deal enough damage on their own to get through it without the crystal taking a lot of damage. Bear in mind also that you’d have minimal damage boosts at this point and if you’re going for “true” sentries only, then options such as cactus armor and thorns potions wouldn’t be allowed
I wish they added a sentry at like the very start of the game that you could craft so you can actually kill the first few bosses with sentries and armour you could craft to be able to spawn more sentries

You know, if you're going to finesse the rules you set for yourself by allowing damage dealing accessories or armor, I'd rather you just say the challenge starts once you have the thing. It's kind of pointless to start from the point of "I'm only doing x" if you immediately violate that with a technicality.
When you fall into the shimmer water (starts falling through the earth)
Player "oh boy just what i wanted AN UNEXPECTED ADVENTURE"
Although I'm not sure if you were using it, the pre 1.4 summoner weapon only way to beat the wall of flesh would be to spam the ballista staff since it can shoot immediatly after you place it, so by placing a bunch you can "Rapid fire" the ballista I'm a sense
That got nerfed in 1.4.4, most sentries now have a couple seconds of cooldown before they can shoot
You know a class is bad when Golem is a legitimately difficult boss
Or maybe it’s just me that’s bad lol
@@ChiefLogan_ I cannot really agree as someone who can barely beat master mode
"Sentry up ahead!"
- Demoman TF2
2:01 nice detail with the 1ups
The ice dragon staff is a sentry sad u didn’t use it
I just really didn’t want to farm for the key tbh
Great video I’m surprised you don’t have more subscribers
Thank you!
This isn't sentires-only.
Finally The Old One's army gets used.
Always hate how it's one of my favorites yet everybody avoids it. Sad the loot isn't as good either with some weapons really being useless.
At least the war table gives an undeniable reason to do it. Especially in expert and master mode.
Yeah it’s pretty unique compared to other events in the game, I kinda wish the weapons/accessories were a bit better though, it’s mostly only useful for summoners
although this has already been done your commentary makes this so much better
7:38 Arachno-WHAT!? Bro, it's 2024... let the arachnids be!
ikr let the spiders get married 🙄
Can't you in Theory, fight bosses during the old ones army event, to have the additional sentries of the event?
I’m not too sure actually, but it’s an interesting idea
bruh the slimy saddle is not a sentrie its actually considered one of the summon weapons
This guy is still insane though and props to him I couldnt find another way to do it
Slimy saddle isn’t a weapon, it’s a mount. I allowed it for this challenge because I was aiming to restrict my weapons to sentries only, anything else goes really
You had fishing accessory equipped while fighting mechs, I had mining armor equipped fighting plantera
OOA armor is the only reason i beat moonlord master mode on a summoner playthrough, really fills in the defense gap
My first summoner playthrough was the same, squire/Valhalla armor are amazing for summoner
**rolls eyes**
**adds challenge to list of Terraria challenges I need to complete**
Just a heads up, from my experience, 9 times out of 10 the flame burst sentry is way better than the ballista sentry.
It’s faster with lower damage, so may be a little more consistent against faster bosses
SHIELD OF CHUTHULU IS MELEE
Not a weapon tho
Came for terraria, stayed for the gorgeous accent
I would recommend using boulders, rolling cacti, bees, npc's, or lava to defeat deerclops as soon as possible because the shield of Cthulhu actually deals melee damage and the slime mount deals summoner damage.
The issue with allowing those is that they do too much damage, there wouldn’t be any reason to stop using these and use sentries instead until well into hardmode. At that point you may as well allow any weapons until obtaining a sentry, as it is unlocking sentries massively increased your power, however if you’d used boulders and cacti already then it’d decrease your damage
I wonder if anyone has done a "accessories dmg only" run?
I actually found exactly that just yesterday, it was done on a channel called “kinkoos”
@@ChiefLogan_ wow! Thank you, I'll check him out!
Spy is sapping those sentries
I keep forgetting about don't starve and terraria collab, saw houndius shootius in thumbnail and thought "even with mods sentry weapons aren't good?"
I gotta try this in my next terraria run. you're just too good at the game. bosses didnt stand no chance
Go for it! It’s a pretty fun challenge although definitely grindy at certain spots (specifically killing your first mech)
@@ChiefLogan_ ye looks like it would take awhile but seems like a fun challenge to put myself up against.
Good luck with it! I’ve been told the frost hydra staff is more reliable than the ballista, so maybe give that a try in the late game
@@ChiefLogan_ will do! Thanks for the great playthrough. Have a nice day!
crafting only the forbidden mask and robes was the correct choice- the treads don't give summon damage and the set bonus doesn't, either
Yeah the set bonus would’ve been nice against certain bosses like the destroyer though
loved this. new sub!
Great video deserves way more views
Fun fact: if you would've built your mech arena with walls, spiders would be able to climb on them, that's what I did when doing a normal playthrough so idk if the summon and sentry are the same
I was actually planning on doing is challenge lol, looks like someone beat me to it!
You should still do it! It was quite different to playing with any other subclass tbh
I only ever do hybrid minions/sentry with whatever
It makes me happy to see that this is actually possible
Don't really think you beat this challenge since you dealt damage with mount and shield
Unfortunately there’s no way to complete vanilla with only sentry damage, since there aren’t any sentries pre-boss. Using sentries as your only weapon is the closest you can get, allowing other sources of damage that aren’t weapons
With the spider summons and spider-staff spiderlings if you build background walls theh can climb on them, greatly improving their viability.
I thought that just applied to the spider staff minions, not the queen spider minions too, very useful tip, thanks!
I personally don’t like using strategies that are too much cheese, I’d rather stick to a more “intended” way
the vine booms are killing me
Oh My GOsh yOU UseD tHe sHieLd oF CTHuHlu whIch DoEz MelEE DaMaGe SO ITs nOt a SentRY
Now this raises the question, can you beat Terraria with only passive damage? No summons, no weapons, no traps or environmental damage (excluding lava solely to acquire the Slimy Saddle). Basically bone helm, star cape, etc.
You may be interested in a video uploaded very recently by CJ deathbot…
@@ChiefLogan_ I'll look into that, thanks.
Are you talking about the classless one?
Balista panic turns your balistas into machine guns of death. I almost beath moonlord with just a campfire arena and balistas but it was on normal.
Ah yes, lava = sentry and slime = sentry
and the shield of cthulu is also a sentry
and so are the shadow hands
The challenge was using sentries as my only weapon. None of those count as weapons, they’re just alternate methods of dealing damage
@@ChiefLogan_ well I'm pretty sure that all besides the slime mount deal static damage, slime mount instead deals summoner damage.
In any case it would be impossible to do anything with literally only the sentries.
back when sentries really became their own weapon class, with the old ones army being added, i DID figure out how to beat moon lord with only sentries. took me a couple attempts, but once i figured it out, it worked pretty reliably. props to you for doing it for the whole game though! that's definitely a lot more impressive
the ultimate tower defense experience
Something I figured out is that after the army ends, if you hold the Etherian Mana & start another OOA event, you keep that mana & get mana from the next event.
Basically, you can get way more mana than you should, which is way more sentries.
Im pretty sure it gets removed from your inventory when the event ends, although you can get around it by using chests to store the mana
@@ChiefLogan_
I meant clicking the Mana right before the event ends, you continue holding it. If you put it in a chest or inventory, it disappears. If you continue to hold it & right click the OOA pedestal, then you can put the mana back into your inventory without it disappearing. You can try it if you’d like.
Ahhh okay I understand, you mean holding it outside of your inventory, like on your cursor?
@@ChiefLogan_
Yeah
@@Riltea put the mana in the chest before the event ends and do not open the chest untill you start a new one. It will work.
"Spy's sappin' my Sentry!"
I know this video is a bit old, but an editing tip is to create a mono audio track for 8-bit sound effects since those are usually mono and they're only in one ear in stereo
Can I ask what sound effects you’re talking about? I’m not sure I really understand what you mean
@@ChiefLogan_ For the mario bit you used some jumping / 1-up sound effects and they only played in the left ear. That usually happens when it's a mono audio clip in a stereo audio track so it just picks one end to play it on
Ahhh okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the tip! I’ll try to remember it if I’m ever using sounds like this again
you failed the challenge the moment you laid your eyes on that slimy saddle, it does summon damage, so it is technically a class damaging weapon, which is why you "could" use lava, so you know, just saying, that you did not 100% do it
I‘m surprised that you didn‘t go for the Clinger Staff. It spawns a column of cursed flames. I got it unintentionally in a regular playthrough and it helped a lot against the Destroyer.
Unfortunately that’s counted as a magic weapon rather than a sentry
I laughed too hard at the Mario sound effects LMFAOOOO
Sentry *weapons*
The weapons is important here I see ^^
As a man once said “Sentry Goin Up”
I really like terraria's sentry sets, the ranged ones are my favorite, since I find the normal ranged ones pretty boring
How can you have so many buffs when you dont fish or plant anything. Did you cheat them in?
Un un underrated youtuber
Finally! My favorite class
Ah yes skeletron prime everyones favorite pre mech boss
For a sentry-only play through, would it be cheating to use traps for at least the Old One’s Army?
Everyone comes up with their own rules for their playthroughs. A lot of people didn’t like me using accessories/mounts to deal damage before I got sentries
@@ChiefLogan_ makes sense, I’ll do what’s fun I guess
hey if you plan on doing a moded variant of this then try the secrets of the shadows mod it even adds a way to take the sentries with you
This Is the perfect prove that the summoner class Is the best
these challenges can be fun once you get to the concept. i wouldn't play any game for 7 hours not having fun
I was still having fun! It was just a different kind of challenge to a normal playthrough
I did this challenge but allowed whips too because I don’t want it to be absolute hell
Emm actually 🤓 shield of cthulhu deals melee damage
Emm actually 🤓 shield of cthulhu isn’t a weapon
@@ChiefLogan_ Emm actually 🤓 the title says "Can You Beat Terraria Using Sentries Only" not "Can You Beat Terraria Using Sentry Weapons Only"
Btw im only joking
Emm actually 🤓 it does say that since I just changed it
@@ChiefLogan_ Emm 🤓 so is shield of cthulhu a sentry weapon?
I’d love that, just a single sentry pre-boss is all that’s needed, and maybe an armor themed around tier 1 old ones army
flame burst rods fire everytime you resummon them so you can basically use it as a weapon
Unfortunately that changed in 1.4.4 for all sentries, they each have a cooldown after being placed before they can fire
