    for an old-school guy like me (51) it's awesome to see the boys going straight-line down the right gutter

    Watching Butturff and Cooley, especially, gives you an idea of how different that shot is from the norm. Cooley slow-wheeling it while still ripping the inserts out of the ball and it moves 5 boards tops.

    Years ago I bowled in a PBA experience league. This was one of my favorite patterns. Slow ball speed and straight up 5th board.

    Not just 50 feet of oil, 50+ mL, too. There were people who were using drywall screen on their ball.

    Aw, you should've showed Buttruff more. Let me guess: frozen rope up the 3 or 4 board with urethane? Can't be too sure though; always a mystery when he gets up to bowl. Lol

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling
      @ThomasLarsenBowling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually strong reactive balls with a bunch of surface. Too much oil for urethane

  • @hellsk100
    @hellsk100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If anyone can shed some knowledge. If your bowling reactive on a 50 foot pattern, would you rather have a Asym ball?

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling
      @ThomasLarsenBowling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're bowling on 50 feet the most important is getting the right amount of surface. For some asyms will be the best choice if you need something get started, but for some symmetrics will be better because the core will allow the ball not get too early if you are using a lot of surface. I used a combination of Rubicon and Zen Master - so both asym and sym.

    Years ago one week of league play the lanes were flooded with oil. If you threw with any speed the ball went everywhere. Somehow I thought of really slowing the ball down. Couldn't have been going over 10 mph. Right down 15 and it would get to the pocket. The pins would just topple over but I had 17 in a row in the middle and 782. Four single pins the last game.

      Making the best of a bad situation

    • @leo5208
      @leo5208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a condition like this, might it work better to go straight diagonally from the corner of the lane to the pocket? At least you'd get a tiny bit more angle and less deflection and wouldn't have to deal with the lane breaking down. Is it just easier to be accurate going down the middle with a straight-ahead approach?

    • @MetalGearDavid57
      @MetalGearDavid57 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leo5208 That would be a good idea if you're only trying to hit the pocket, but it's good to note that there's a minimum degree of entry into the pocket you need to hit, which is about 2 degrees or so, and you won't be able to get that from throwing directly from the corner of the lane to the pocket. What pros want to do is hit a certain area with their comfortable rev rate and ball speed so they don't have to worry about underangling.
      Your idea would work, however, if you had a lower rev rate. You can see Chris Barnes at 0:25 as well as some other gentleman I'm unfamiliar with at 1:17 do exactly that. Where you play the lane really comes down to your rev rate and ball speed combination, as well as the equipment you're using.

    The first 4 or 5 guys cranked the stuffings out of the balls and all either missed the head pin completely or barely grazed it on super light hits. The later bowlers shown all played far outside and pretty straight, which I would guess is the only reasonable way to play the lanes on these conditions. If the ball just won't hook, why try to force it?

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling
      @ThomasLarsenBowling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You definitely couldn't force it to hook. But there wasn't really any best place to play

    • @DanMan1234561
      @DanMan1234561 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because most of the bowlers today have no idea how to play a line or conditions like this. They just grab the ball that hooks to the moon and stand in the left gutter. It's good to see but kinda sad that is what is necessary. The plastic ball tournament is fun to watch too.
