  • Well we’re back in action with a new #Battletech / #Mechwarrior video. This video is also going to be fulfilling our Member Goal which was from last month, which was to do a video in the voice of #Kermit / #KermitTheFrog, so you will have to forgive the amphibious tone of this video.
The #Urbanmech is a staple of Battletech at this point, a #Battlemech with an odd shape and questionable quality. Let’s talk about this today.

It dies, in no small part, because you must recognise the threat it presents and focus it down before it's able to engage. Ignore the walking turret with a BFG at your own peril. In cities, its intended terrain, it's an even worse adversary to ignore because its low mobility no longer prevents it from closing range unmolested, and it still carries a solid coating of armor and a pretty obscene amount of firepower for its size.

Many BattleTech players don't understand the origin of the Urbanmech and what it was built for. The Urbanmech came with the CityTech Expansion, where the battles were in cities with brutal skidding rules and damage when you ran into buildings. Moving fast usually meant you broke your mech. Also, C-Bills were introduced as a method for pricing mechs. Most of us would pair up mech lances by weight, but C-Bills introduced the concept of balancing lances by cost. As stated, the Urbanmech was both very cheap and moved slow, which in some games made it really good if it was used in its intended environment and you played by C-Bills.

My brother&I used to play Battletech together, sometimes for entire weekends at a stretch. I fell in love with the clans, while he read the novels&just chuckled at me&my omnimech combinations.
I once changed a Dire Wolf to my fave weapons&boasted to him that I would savage anything he deployed against my mighty configuration.
    He simply said "anything? Really!"
I could only scoff&nod with way too much confidence.
He simply noted what my configuration cost&asked if we could fight in the city.
I had an active probe, so I foolishly agreed.
So I marched my 100 ton Omni mech up to his city. Detected 6 mechs. So in I went, pulse lasers just a humming for some flimsy inner sphere mechs to light up.
Because of the way city fighting works. I could only see 1 of the mechs at a time. So I laughed when I realized my 1st target was an Urbie.
I shredded the thing with 2 large pulse lasers targeting its right arm. Easily overflowing the arm location&sinking a critical into the adjacent torso. Knocking out the squats main weapon.
I laughed again. We ended the turn.
My brother asked me if I wanted the good news or the worse news 1st?
    I said good news.
Which was that I could now detect most of his garrison force. Which was 10 more Urbies in range of my active probe.
The worse news was that I couldn't detect the other 9.
He figured out that my 1 Omni could pay for 22 Urban mechs. Which is what I was facing.
    I got savaged.
The pinnacle of clan tech. The best I could imagine using said tech.
None of it mattered against waves of the little bastards, since I could at most, only target&maybe kill one or two every turn. Their speed didn't matter. They were already where they needed to be, just powered down&waiting. Their individual weapons&armor didn't matter.
The entire point of an urbanmech is that it's a mobile weapon platform, that every city on every planet can afford, and realistically would.
Just to accumulate them. Rethinking them as the most ridiculous infantry force over a long enough timeline. My brother just looked at the Urbie&saw where Elementals came from.
I saw, like most, the wrong thing.

The Urbie is just fun. In a one-off game, a lance of Urbanmechs against two mediums in an urban setting can be really enjoyable for both players. If used as slightly mobile ambush turrets, the Urbanmech is very effective. In literally any other role, it's going to come up short.

The out of game factor is that a merc or pirate commander has the weigh the risk of engaging a city defended by them and if it will cost him more in parts and repairs to take that city. I think my favorite model of the good old Urbie is actually the URM-90 SuburbanMech. I like the ammo independence and long range firepower provided by its PPC, which help to offset its low mobility if you have to use it outside of ideal terrain. On the other hand, unlike most UrbanMechs, you have to watch your heat in it, especially if alpha striking.
Regarding the original design, what I find strange is that TRO:3025 makes mention of a machine gun that the URM-60 didn't have. I wonder if, instead of the superfluous eleventh heat sink (you will never, ever generate enough heat in a URM-60 to overheat), it was supposed to have a machine gun with half a ton of ammunition for it?

The Urbie is an amazing mech when you realize it's a hyper specialized designed. It is intended to defend cities, not towns, not jungles, cities. It's slow because it's intended to hold the line, not outflank anything, in areas with extreme cover. Peak behind a building, fire, lean back to having an entire skyscraper between you and return fire. It's jump jets are for jumping over buildings, again to safety of total cover. Someone made a joke comment about hiding inside a building, Kool Aid Manning through the wall, and shooting an assault mech in the back of the knee then jumping over another building to safety. That sounds funny, but seriously, that is exactly how an UrbanMech is intended to be used. And they are cheap as a factor of their design. Urbies are pack animals. Yeah, the FireStarter can jump in to flank it. Can the FireStarter survive the coming onslaught of point blank AC10 fire from the seven other Urbies?

I like the Urbanmech. It performs in its intended role well enough, and even if you're not too fond of it, you don't have to pay much for it. Astute pilots can use the mech's Extended Torso Twist to keep faster opponents (i.e., all opponents) in their sights. Further, if more intimidating ally mechs are nearby, enemies are likely to dismiss Urbanmechs and focus on the greater threat. This tends to be a sound tactic...but every so often, these enemies wind up with the Urbies' oversized guns trained on their rear arcs. You can't ask Urbanmechs to win a battle by themselves, but maybe...if you're fighting in dense terrain or a city...you can use them to surprise the hell out of someone who isn't paying attention. And that's a lot of fun.

When playing MW5 the Urbie can be a real pain in the ass when fighting against it, especially in the early stages of ones' career or campaign. The burstfire AC/10 that they carry can wreak havoc on light and lighter medium Mechs.. And when adding the "Yet Another Mechlab" mod there's even a variant with twin AC/2-BF's wich should not be underestimated. Sofar i haven't kept any Urbie's i've salvaged, they're just too slow for my fighting style, but as i'm typing this comment i'm thinking to change that somewhat and experiment a bit since with the aformentioned mod you can also swap out the engines. Something to think about. In the Battletech VG however there's sadly no such thing as far as i no and thus no real reason for me to keep the Urbie around so they just keep on ending getting sold or scrapped.

@@BigRed40TECH I think there a factors other then what table top that must be considered here. Logistically they are super easy to maintain and keep armed. Planets with thin budgets that just need something to keep pirates at bay can afford these things in bulk which is why they are still being made.
I look at the Urban mech as a huge success if its used how its meant to be used, Its a perfect budget mech for garrison duty and city defense in lore. You have to look at what its supposed to do, and that it is, be enough of a threat that it will make random pirate forces think twice about messing with a city or base its assigned to defend. For the price of one standard mech you can buy a six pack of urban mech. Logistically if your a planetary or city governor you look at the fact that this mech is cheap, its maintenance costs are low, AC10 ammo is cheap and can prob be produced on planet to keep the units armed. If your lance of 4 takes down even one enemy mech, they prob paid for themselves in use and salvage. And in a city fight, it can outmaneuver a lot of bigger mechs that might get hung up on buildings or bridges, etc. City fighting where long range, and speed become minimal benefit, these things can knife fight down much bigger mechs.
Its easy to say, just buy a Wasp or Stinger, that has more advanced systems and more advanced equipment and needs more yearly maintenance time and you have to pay techs and mechanics that can do that work. Its not actually cheaper if the maintenance costs are 10 times that of an urbie. This is a thing that does not come across in the tabletop or online games. Upfront Cbill or Battle Points costs dont really reflect what the maintenance and logistical costs of keeping a mech going over 100 years for a poor government would be. Great houses can afford to have standing armies when pulling from 1000 worlds to pay for them. Planet X next to the border to the prehirpy that exports potatoes and has to keep pirates from stealing them from a warhouse. Your warehouse isnt moving and the pirates want it. They could buy and maintain one stinger or 4 urbies. They have to come to you to steal your potatoes, so you dont have to go chase them, you hunker down and say come get them.
While these things are small enough to go into some parking garages and buildings etc. Its almost perfect for purpose. Its when you take it out of that purpose it fails. Then there will be all the local mods to such mechs. Swap out the Ac10 for and AC5 or AC2(VTOL and vehicle killer). Swap out the small laser for Flamer or a Med or Large laser to better suit what your planet could logistically support. (though we can tinker with swapping engines in Mechwarrior and MW online, I dont think a planetary force buying these would risk doing that or want to pay for that type of thing. So I imagine they stick to the under powered pitban 60)
Another thing people tend to do when playing games. They dont actually play many scenarios that the Urbies would accel at. Seeing peoples battle reports where they do something like charge 20 urbies charge at an overpower custom build omni. But what if the mission was you have to assault an objective and take control of it, and there are 20 urbies in hull down positions waiting for you to try to take it. Able to dodge behind or hide in buildings, It becomes a very different scenario. Your med or heavy enter a city hex and get blasted by a lance with 4 ac10s and 4 small lasers. And you also have infantry forces that can work around the flanks or backs of mechs dealing with urbies. SRMs and Portable machine guns from infantry can add up fast.

You mock the Urbie, but we ran some events with it at our local games store and the thing shreds most things it encounters when in groups, and is quite useful in combined arms groups. they are 'just' durable enough to be able to survive long enough that they tend to not be ignorable. This is ultimately their best trait, they do to much damage to ignore but are not easy enough to swat away without drawing fire that would be better used elsewhere. Case in point, the SRM Carrier is both a more dangerous, faster, and more expensive target that is immediately prioritized for destruction...but if you pair it with some UM-60Ls that make it their express business to get in your rear arc...well now you have a Morton's fork of SRMs or AC20. It works surprisingly well in urban close quarters combat, especially if you use its quirks of extended torso twist and low profile.

And the 360 degree rotation means that however you try to flank it you will find that barrel staring you down.
I mean, sure, its not a good mech, but its a scavenger. Its job is to take out the beat up remnants of the attacking force that made it to what they thought was an undefended civilian population.
Definitely needs another weapon though. Replacing the extra heatsink with a medium lazer would make it significantly better.
Edit: the Urbies best feature is that its where it needs to be to defend the town because you took all the better mechs to go fight elsewhere.

I personally view the Urberie as a Mech used for more civil service protection. A Mech used to put put fires, riot control, or light defense line force. I mean would you as a rioter throw a rock at a Mech with a cannon that could make you disappear? And said cannon is just a water cannon. Perfect for urban use. Ah, Urbancmech, the self-propelled war crime in making. It`s so good that many colonies chose to bolt an ac10 on a Loader King rather than buying an Urbie. Still that ac10 or ac20 makes it a priority target on a battlefield, not gonna lie, underestimating this walking garbage can has cost me far too many arms and or legs.

All I could think while listening to this was “I bet Kermit stuffed gonzo into one of these and pushed him into Solarus after he caught a whiff of gonzo’s bacon smelling sniffer.”

@@GnarledStaff I'm going to be honest now I kind of want to make a bit of terrain that just has that plastered across a giant banner, but I'm probably going to need to get the new catalyst urby so that I can figure out how tall the thing has to be at minimum

I wish I could say it was MWO that made the trash can iconic but for most they just seem to like the POS.

Oscar the Grouch might get mad but I say we change his trashcan's name to the "Kurmimech" from here on.

I dont understand how no Great House thought to take the UM-R60L, take the AC/20 and single heat sink out of it, and slap a gauss rifle on it, then it gets solid damage at amazing range.

    • @yoloman3607
      @yoloman3607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Because some random enemy would just charge in, and steal said gauss rifle then run away with it. The gauss rifle nearly costs as much as the urbanmech itself.

Everybody laughing until that AC/10 lands a hit and suddenly you remember that, no matter the platform, it's still a bloody AC/10.
Even better if you fail to recognize it's the Urbie variant with the AC/20.
The Suburbie is really funny, though. When you except a brrt and what you get is a pop-and-sizzle and you realize this is an e-trashcan you're fighting.
I keep a collection of these babies in every one of my HBS Battletech games. Like, I never sell ANY of the three variants. My meta is that my mercs occasionally have little games with the urbies :D

When ever I get the HBS BT mission where I have to escort three rookies one of them *always* has an Urbie...
And it's often the most useful of the lot. The AC/10 is no joke and a hell of a BIG gun for a light mech.
