This little guy turned out to be a surprising threat in MW5. That heavy a gun at lower levels can just ruin your smaller mechs, and because of his 360 degree torso twist, you can't out flank him. Several of these popping out of a city can turn a cake walk mission in to an expensive repair bill.
True, when I first encountered one I thought, "Oh well, that won't be a problem." Only to hear the distinct sound of AC/10 rounds missing your Mech by too little a distance to be comfortable. I now make them primary targets, since a couple of unlucky hits can turn a profitable mission into a repair fest...
Because of it's low battle value, in table top there is a strategy called the Urbie Swarm. When dealing with equal BV you can usually field 2-4 Urbies per enemy. There is something to be said for dozens of AC-10's on the battlefield.
As someone else put it, the Urbie is not the Mech that fights jingoist wars of aggression, it’s a defender of the people. They protect and serve when the big name mechs come. Where other mechs might abandon a city as a lost cause, the Urbie stands and fights.
It's a very silly mech, but it _is_ pretty good at one specific thing...and you can buy a bunch of them for cheap. It's a municipal government's dream mech, and no one will commit parking violations if they have to worry about their cars meeting with a Police Urbie's AC10.
You say "underpowered" and "underarmed" and I say "It's cheap enough to field in mass numbers, easy enough to train in, fast enough for city fighting, and can core a medium mech in a few volleys". After all, if there's one Urbanmech, there's usually another pack of urbies right behind them. The Urbanmech is hilarious because it's actually genius in what it is: a cheap militia defense unit for city fighting. But it also looks like a trash can and has a big gun, so of course it's a meme, and we love it anyway.
The urbie might be my favorite, at least as far as mwo goes. Just refit with an 170+ rated engine and more weight-efficient weapon loadout, and you have yourself a mobile sturdy low-profile punish machine!
The walking trash can. The only mech in the BT universe that an Atlas can out run! There is another variant in the Rogue tech mod; if you play it on brutal, there is a Word of Blake version called the 'Nuke Urbie'. As you can guess, it's a nuke armed suicide mech. Thanks for the laughs GDN, you did the poor thing justice!
There was 2 variants that used an xl160 engine and endosteel to increase speed, 2 jumpjets for maneuverability, it used either a few star league light ppc's with a long range machine gun array or 5 ermedium lasers with the array with a bunch of double heat sinks. A periphery pirate stole a vulture from clan diamond shark and sold it to buy a few lance worth of these Compellan urbies.
I like the idea behind it but due to most of the combat in BattleTech being "open country" then it does seem somewhat limited in it's use. Hopefully the new "URBAN" upgrade might make the little trashcan shine in all it's glory!
TY for making an objective video about the urbanmech GDN rather than just trashing it as most do. Having recently gotten into Battletech & only played 2 games I did find them to @ least be inexpensive & in squads can be usefull as support . Thats all I can say for them though & TY for covering all the variants. lastly better than no mech 2 all...sorta
The urban mech has a lot more potential then most people think, just have to make sure it's used properly, usually best suited to veteran mech pilots who would know how to get the most out of it.
well yeah but the same pilot in a jenner or panther would get more out of it without the 2 minute problem. feel like the urbanmech's biggest advantage is it's enemies might think it sucks more than it does so they underestimate it. unless your talking about mwo where it's over buffed to hell.
Could see the logic for Solaris, honestly, at least in the Lights Only style matches. The Urbie hits hard and can survive a lot of punishment for that weight-class, after all, so the poor speed might be a worthwhile sacrifice. ...Free-for-alls, though? Yeah, at that point, it's either what you can afford, or you're the funniest little target on the whole range.
Another point for Solaris is gambling. If you have an atlas against against an urbie, everyone will bet on the atlas. You will get humungus odds betting on an Uribe win. With a skilled pilot, that means someone will win a lot of c bills. Imagine if you bet 10 c bills at 1,000,000 to 1 odds?
I refer to the Urby as an "Infantry Support Mech." Infantry can keep up with it. If an enemy concentrates on the urby, then the INF eats them alive. If they concentrate on the infantry, then they get disembroiled by the urby.
I choose to interpret the Urbie as the Mumen Rider of the Battletech universe. As in “It’s not about winning or losing! I just have to stand here and face you!” From a defiant Urbiejockie staring down an Atlas with its AC/10 out of ammo.
It has one job that it does really well, but only in that setting. City fighting is always brutal, quick, and unpredictable. An urbanmech lance defending Scott has more advantages than you would think. They know where all the ambush spots, refit points, and angles of attack are. A larger mech is at a 👊 NCT disadvantage in this setting unless it wants to just plow through every building in it's way. Even so, a defense garrison can pit 4-8 urbanmechs against a single larger target and still come out ahead in terms of costs.
Should be painted in the Colors of 'Herbie the Love Bug'. Because that little rally car wouldnt quit. In MWO I respect this mech. As it can maintain a constant bead on you with its weapons. While you have too move torso twist and aim arms. You aren't getting the equal face time. Against a Herbie. He can run away and fire on you at the same time.
In NWO the Urbi is one of my favorite fun Mechs..... it is often ignored until it's too late for the opponents and I'm in a good attacking position XD.
Tiny, slow, but cute. Y'gotta love this little guy. Hilarious. :) If you give it an XL engine you can mount RACs on it and make it much faster. Turns it into a killing machine to be feared. Try it!
I will always remember the arrow4 variant can carry nukes. And someone used them in a dropship as cab units. Yes I like them, but have mostly been on the receiving end of the buggers.
Apart of me had a story concept that I wish I could have ran in a game. It was very much in an urban environment. Just the Urbanmechs were used by the local planetary police force. Not on a large scale and set up for more of riot deterrent than combat. Tear Gas Cannons, Water Cannon with large accompany tank and ability to hook hoses to fire hydrants if needed. Plus still having ability to handle those rioters that decide to get more violent. Either going with some "Less" deadly Rubber to lethal anti-personnel guns. Personally see it perfect in the role. Doesn't need to be fast and just the fact it is a fucking Mech. Any Protesters or Would Be Rioter may have second thoughts in causing trouble. And keep in mind...this is only if Protesting is even allowed by the Planetary Government. Now if it came down to being against another mech. That is the major drawback...it isn't armed for Mech on Mech combat. It is a Police Mech! Got to call SWAT for that kind of shit and they got Awesomes! (I kid)
The Urbanmech can't even jump over a lot of buildings! If you use the rules for it from, I think it was Future Wars magazine then it is more useful. The rules were based on the pic and description in the original 3025 Tech Readout. They did it for all the stuff from both the 3025 and 3026 Tech Readouts.
i'd have to say yes it is one of my favorites. In Alpha Strike it does just enough damage to threaten larger mechs but not so much to make it a primary target, it's tough enough to take a hit from some medium mechs but will melt if a heavy or assault mech farts in it's direction. It also looks cool.
It may be mocked and called "fire plug," "trashcan"or "R2D2," but it was probably the last defender of the old Star League as things fell apart. It has enough fire power you can't ignore it. In city fighting or other tight terrain it can be bothersome. I have lost an Ostroc to one and have seen them take out a Zeus.
And I'd point out its canonical that an urbanmech with a nuke took out most of the Kell Hounds. So while its not the best unit for fighting on a flat featureless plane...they have their uses with the right load-out.
Love the urbanmech. I always keeps one in my mechwarrior 5 hanger. With the ac20 is great foe head shoots at low tonnage and at the start of the games it is super cheap
My only beef with the Urbie is that per the design specs the BT rules should've been written to encompass its advantages. Like giving it movement bonuses in urban settings, allowing it to rotate its torso 360˚, the ability to move through buildings, advantages vs. infantry, etc. That would've justified in game the use of what is otherwise almost always a death trap. What else can you call something with such appalling low speed complimented with tissue paper armor and ammo capacities that barely lasted beyond its survival chances?
@@GrimDarkNarrator The FLS-8K tops out at 86.4 kph. That's over twice that of the UM-R60's 32.4 kph, and the Flash doesn't need anmo. I wouldn't call it a linear comparison.

I saw this coming eventually. Here we go. The only mech I know that can't out run standard battle armor... Or even well equipped conventional infantry! It has a decent gun and about as much armor as it's weight allows. This guy needed tight terrain to survive long, and I mean tight enough that other machines can't fit. It has jump jets, but not enough to jump over a building much taller than it is. That means it's often stuck on a roof top at least one turn. I would say hit and run tactics are useful, but they really aren't. Attacking from hiding and getting a couple of hits off is about as good as it can hope for, one identified it's life span is either moments or it's bypassed so rapidly it's contribution is minimal. If you spread a half dozen in built up, mutually supported positions with battles armor and infantry support it can be a bit annoying holding an objective, or drop a 100 ton imp into a formation to hide it, that's it's only real tactically realistic options outside of bullying civilian and low tech populations and cheap mech security in places even cheaper units like infantry or battle armor aren't as well suited like hostile environment. Normally I talk about table top performance and RPG performance. But honestly what I said about fits both. I have seen rpg players dispossessed and steal locusts and stingers over a gift urbie. What kind of mech can't out run jump infantry in terrain that's exactly where the PBI are safest? I have never heard any real life explanation or rumor why FASA even bothered to waist print on it let alone invest molds into a mini but dang if they didn't and they cranked out a bunch of them during their run.
Seems lore-wise, they wanted to make a mech suited pretty much JUST for urban combat against just angry crowds or lightly armoured vehicles. But then some smartass came and said that, since its a battlemech, it should also be used against other battlemechs. By the time they realized what foolishness they engaged in, the only institution dedicated to making them backed itself into a corner by JUST making and supporting Urbanmechs. Seems FASA was ahead of the meme.

Seems FASA was ahead of the meme.
@@GrimDarkNarrator it's likely they wanted a joke. Looking back at at art for that era they used the urbi is a visual masterpiece so they had street rep and there ya go! I'm talking out my ass again lol. No but seriously the artwork back then. Thinking about it the urbie makes plenty of sense. FASA was a bunch of guys who survived the American 70's lol.
I don't know about you, but my new favorite mech is the Hollander, artillery in a 35t mech is mean.
Solaris jocks.....are strange.
The hi-point of Mechs.
"In Universe" this Mech isn't that bad when it sticks to it's designed application. This is like the Honda Civic of Mechs. If you use it to to do what it's designed for you are good to go.... Try and make it go faster and hit harder... And you end up looking like a fool.
Urbanmech. Mech from the hood.
Ain' nobody go' time fo' that.
@@GrimDarkNarrator Damn right It hurts, homie.
OH LORD HE COMIN
Yes! Yes!
30 ton mechs were not meant to move 2/3 the same way 80 ton non-clan mechs were not meant to move 5/8.
Religious jokes when you're just supposed to be reporting on what next next status that's not good that's really bad I really appreciate you doing what you did I really love your Channel please stop making jokes about something you don't know if you really do BattleTech to BattleTech you don't have to make comments Spurs like the way you did you didn't say anything but what you showed was really insulting if you're going to do BattleTech keep it BattleTech thank you
Urbie Chan lore? :O Yes please!
I'm not finished in any way.
@@GrimDarkNarrator My bad. What I actually wanted to know is if you are a Finn. Or in other words if you're from Finnland. Just to be sure. :D
Swoll2-D2
What's the Aragorn mech?
What do you mean?
@@GrimDarkNarrator In the picture with the urbies as hobbits what is the mech that was used as the basis for Aragorn
@@xthebumpx A Black Knight I believe, based on the profile.
What is this about Warhammer Beyblades?
“Furbie the Urbie”
😂Hurbie the Urbie😅
I have limited interest in Battletech, as of 40k.
I kinda think this is my Favourite BT Mech.
As it looks like no other mech I have seen (it looks, more like a Gundam.)
Also it is so Derpy, like an upside down Easter-Egg with legs and guns.
So Derpy, they are Cute.
Speaking of Gundams. Do you have any interest in covering Gundam lore, like you do BT?
If there's a place where the info is readily available and there's enough lore on individual topics for 10-ish minute episodes, I wouldn't say no.
@@GrimDarkNarrator Ok cool. There are several Gundam wikis, that give a huge amount of information, if you decide to do anything. The 2 main problem would be your time and WEEABOOS in the comments, probably angry you were not doing them in Japanese, or you were not following their head-cannon and fan-fic. ;-p ;-)))
Til urbie=baneblade
lol.
A shitty underpowered and underarmored Baneblade? like a Macharius Heavy tank?
I ❤ Urbis 😍
Ah, lolmech.
Mememech.
You know I really used to like your channel a lot and respected what you say but the me start making
What exactly did i say ?
@@GrimDarkNarrator . It's not what you said but in the beginning of the video you made the battlemech look like it was raised from the dead and it was my belief that Jesus was raised from the dead in the purpose that he was raised is to help people and it just look like a mockery of it that's all nothing personal with you I love you Channel but it's just the way you presented it you know like oh he is risen. That's very special to some people but it's nothing against you and like I said I love the way you reported in that fell in love with your camera when you first come out but it's just that we presented the urban neck like he's resurrected or something like Jesus did people could take that as an insult to get nothing against you
And I thank you very much for replying as quickly as you did once again it was just the picture oven Urban mech . Rising from the dead you know that probably has nothing to do with what you trying to say so some people can look at it offensively that's all keep up the good work I'm 52 years old at first discovered BattleTech at the age of 14 been a fan ever since maybe it would be best just to not include pictures like that I know it's a free country and you could do what you say but sometimes that could hurt people making a joke like that is not conductive to telling the story of a spheroid mech but aside from that please keep up the good work thank you
@@timothy4131 Sorry if it offended you. It was just a light joke.
@@GrimDarkNarrator no problem have u read any of the novels they are very good they would give you alot more information on the universe and more maternal for your channel
Once again I asked you please keep it BattleTech don't bring religious innuendos or anything like that into it you don't have to some people can be offended by this if you want to talk BattleTech talk BattleTech if I were you I wouldn't bring jokes about something that you don't know where me know and don't like why can't we just have BattleTech
