Furius Baco Review, PortAventura Intamin Launched Wing Coaster | If Only This Were Smooth...

  • Furius Baco at PortAventura is a one-of-a-kind coaster. This is a prototype launched wing coaster from Intamin. This ride features a powerful hydraulic launch followed by a series of low turns. And to top it all off, this ride has a bizarre theme to a wine vineyard. Now if only the ride were smooth...

@5:45 One thing to note, Baco can run 3 trains, though outside of a rare few times in opening year, it never has. During 3 train operations, the transfer track is meant to act as the unload station (you can see the restraint release mechanism on the track on povs).
Baco is one of my all time top coasters. Yes, it is rough on the outer seats, but I find it mostly bearable on the inner seats. I almost feel like the roughness adds character to it.

I see others have already mentioned Stampida (roughest coaster I've ridden). Still, Baco has got to be the second roughest - at one point I felt like I'd been kicked in the lower back by a horse.
Interesting to hear that the outer seats are worst. Ive heard the same about X2. I had an outer seat near the back for Baco and an inner one at the front for X2, so maybe that's why I didn't find X2 excessively rough.

I absolutely love Baco! Part of that actually comes from the roughness. Flying at those speeds while the train feels like it’s about to fall apart is somehow super fun, and it sorta makes sense with the rides story. The inline-twist is also one of the best inversions out there.

This was the coaster I was most scared to ride during my Europe trip. Unlike every other coaster I’ve ridden so far (aside from Dragon Khan), I was unsure whether this coaster would be amazing or turn me back into a GP. Thankfully, it was awesome. The launch into ejector dip is insane and the inline twist gives awesome hangtime. It is a bit rough, but I did ride in the 2nd to back row on an outside seat and didn’t have any pain or headbanging. I was not expecting to say this, but I’d take Baco over Shambhala any day of the week.

One of the most unique coaster in the world, and way ahead of its time! Probably a little too much so, but this honestly was the first true wing coaster, and paved the way for greater and more comfortable rides! I wouldn’t mind seeing Intamin revived this concept, as I’m sure if it were built now It’d be far more comfortable

Before I proceed to tell my personal story with Furius Baco, here's a piece of info on the preshow's door and why it's not working nowadays. As I've learnt, when it was used it created a sort of vacuum effect when launching the trains, which would cause malfunction and various side effects. So they stopped using it!
Now onto my personal story and opinion... back in September of this year, 2022, I went to Port Aventura for the first time ever. Never had I ridden a coaster, not even a familiar one in my whole life. And I did something I regretted for the rest of the day... going into Furius Baco as my first coaster ever HAHAHA. Well it was SO SCARY. I cried. I even greyed out. Couldn't even scream. And I thought I could never be able to ride a coaster again (which sucks because my boyfriend loves them and we are quite big enthusiasts). Long story short, by the end of the same month, we came back in a 3 day stay at Port Aventura, I challenged my fears, rode Furius Baco 3 times (once the first day for great vengeance haha, then 2 consecutive times the 3 and last day), even got into Shambhala... the only ones I left were Hurakan Condor because it scares the shit out of me, and Dragon Khan... because... well I don't know I chickened. Oh and Red Force. But I will ride those on my next visit, which will be soon!
Tips for riding Baco: never get into the queue first thing in the morning if it has too much waiting time. Go back to it when people are eating at the restaurants and you will be able to ride it several times in a row. Also never sit past the 4th row... 4th row inside gave me a numb arm for a month with a bruise, mind you. My first ever experience on Baco was first row inside, and I am thankful for that hahaha.
It's so much fun to watch these videos about the only amusement park I've ever visited and know a lot about. Can't wait to travel outside and visit some great ones too.

Can't really blame you on skipping Dragon Khan. That thing is an intimidating sight to behold with those massive elements.
It's my second favorite coaster of the park (my winner is El Diablo, mostly because nostalgia of it being the first intense coaster I was ever allowed to ride, and because the trains often run 2 laps on the days I visit the park, so I get extra value off the queue time), but nobody else in my family likes riding Khan more than once per visit.

Having only been on B&M Wungs, I can't say anything but this looks much much more intense, the launch and positive Gs you feel on the low to the ground turns. It's cool and different ti have a wing coaster that's low to the ground the entire time, and a hangtime filled inversion. Because the seats are about the track unlike a B&M wing where they are on the same level right next to the track, and its intensity I'd imagine it's not very smooth. But throat probably adds to the out of control feeling. What weird restraints on a wing coaster as well.

I love roller coasters for a few reasons but one of the biggest are the drops. Furious Baco is rough and only as a height of about 46' with a drop so insignificant as to not even be listed. That's why It's not exactly a bucket list coaster for me. It may be the 3rd fasted coaster in Europe by beating the top speed of Shambala by .9 miles per hour, but I guess that' ok since it opened before Shambala did. I also think that on accelerator coasters the full force of the launch can generally be felt equally if every row, except the wind makes the 1st row feel more intense. but if it's rough like Kinda Ka the back can shake and bump. I know that can be true even for me: someone who is generally a back car enthusiast that testifies that K.K. is best in the front, and I'm guessing that Furious Baco is like that too.

I adore the speed, but if there is one ride in the park that outright needs a full rework, it's this one. Yes, Stampida is feeling it's age and could use some love from RMC (or at least some non-garbage trains), yes Dragon Khan could use newer trains with better restrains, but they don't come even close to how bad Furious Baco gets on it's worst days.

However, the low to the ground turns...

I think many enthusiasts find the weird Intamin launched coaster a fast flawed ride. On the bright side, fast means they feel it's running with unreal speeds hugging the ground. On the downside, flawed means while going through the turns, they felt the ride has a flaw. What's the flaw? What do you think?
    A) The pacing.
    B) The forces.
    C) The smoothness or lack thereof. The ride vibrates profusely throughout the layout, particularly on the inside seats.
    D) The smoothness or lack thereof. The ride vibrates profusely throughout the layout, particularly on the outside seats.

My problem with this ride is that yes its really bumpy, but aside from the launch and the twist, there are 0 forces on the ride. When I first rode it I wasn't much of a coaster enthusiast, and even then I was disappointed with how long I waited for such short boring ride. Definitely my least favorite intamin.

Front row is an incredible ride, with reasonable and bearable roughness. Once you leave the front row, the roughness is painful and unpleasant and is no longer worth riding. Ride the front row or don't ride it at all.

@@CanobieCoaster I only went once on a random row, I think it was around 3rd, whatever I got, but it was an outside seat. The launch was ok/good but I've been on better, as in, more power and kick to the launch. I'll be skipping it entirely next trip, honest. It ruined my day last time. That said, if it was smooth and maybe had just one extra airtime hill amongst all that straight track, it would jump to an 8 or 9.
