  • Except for potty training, jumping and nipping are the two main issues with a puppy. Learn how to effectively train your new puppy not to jump and nip.

I use a very sharp "uhuh" and almost always the puppy will stop jumping. I immediately praise. If the puppy jumps again, I repeat; then I wait for the puppy to keep their 4 on the floor longer and longer and praise as I get a longer time of not jumping. If the puppy sits for a greeting I always praise. I do not turn my back when the puppy jumps, but I don't give any attention either, unless the puppy has 4 on the floor. This similar method has worked well for me.

Just a tip do not where any jewelry when training up close. My CC as a pup took him just a few seconds to destroy bracelets and even ring's. Remember chew toy's are a must make sure they're age appropriate. Our boy is now 115lbs and loves his water buffalo horn's.

I’m no dog trainer but turning is not enough, you might have really ignore the dog for a minute for the punishment to sink in. Also, my dog was very hyper when meeting (jumped around and barked), I now ignore her when I meet her and come to her after a minute so that she doesn’t hype herself up when she hears me coming. It’s still a work in progress with strangers but she’s now usually calm with me and my family. It only took a week to get the new behavior so that’s kinda fast if you ask me

Good job, Joel!!!. very specific and it worked well. how about showing it with a more hyper breed type? would it take the same amount of time if done properly, consistently? I think so! your instructions were quite clear.
I have a problem with folks who meet my dog and encourage the excitement , usually some big guy, and have no idea about correcting the jumping.
(I try to head them off ahead of time, but sometimes have to resort to "OFF" and a pull if I'm too late or the person laughs and wants to play and grab, , when my dog is off leash....not the ideal situation) I try to keep away from folks like that, BUT it has happened

Our 14 week rottweiler puppy gets a combination zoomies and maybe over stimulation and attacks my ankles feet and hands. I've been using this method for a month with only slight improvement. My hands look like pin cushions. She gets plenty of exercise, we live on 16 acres all fenced. I've been treat training her, she's great with eye contact, sit stay break, no food reactivity. She is great with the exception of 10 minutes around 7 am and 7 pm.

@@mandypdx my dog now is 1 year old he is used to his crate just fine and his pen he goes in when instructed and gets a little bone to keep him busy whilst I'm at work. We started giving him freedom at around 9 months old he was totally fine but as he hit 1 year he started marking furniture in the house with urine (not accidentally but intentionally because he knows pee is for outside) so now we have to confine him either to a crate or pen when we are out or keep him near us on a lead to make sure he doesn't mark anymore.

We found a 6 week old border collie mix in the bitter cold in western NC 1 month ago, and she is very aggressive to us. We hired a trainer that trains with treats. Since then, the puppy has become more aggressive to our hands and pockets where we have treats. We watched your video on the different stages of a dog. So we are not sure how to proceed because of the circumstances of how we founder her and don't want to damage her mental attitude. She is about 3 months old now and can be loving but is very mouthy on your hands and arms, which can puncture at times. So my question is how strong of correction should we give her. Note: we have two parrots ( cockatoo and a Bluefront) that we have had for 25 years. Didn't intend to have a dog. We are in our mid seventies. Any suggestions? We have watched a few of your videos but still confused how to help the puppy and how to help us to enjoy her. Right now, it's not pleasant. Thank you. Louise

Mine bites my legs harshly no matter if I turn my back or Im looking at her. She doesn’t let me walk around the backyard its very irritating. If I ignore her until she sit she prob is gonna devour my entire leg.

We have been trying this with our 12 week mini Aussie but as we turn or walk away he begins biting and chasing and tugging out pants etc. What to do at that point?

I have worked on a shoot estate where they have spaniels and labradors, and this is 100% the opposite to how The gamekeepers treat their dogs and their dogs are under command, the entire time and respectful.

How would this apply to a LARGE puppy. I have a Great Pyrenees and Black Labrador mix. At 8 months old he is the size of a large full grown Black Lab. On his hind legs, he is taller than me at 5 ft 1 inch. We can't sit in the floor with him cause he is too big and jumps A LOT! Do I train him as a great Pyrenees or a Black Lab. Can you give me advice or do you have a book?

@@TR-im2bs I am sorry you feel that way. For me and my love for my puppy, that is not an option to get rid of him because it is a little hard at times. It just means I need to find help and work a little harder to help my puppy get along. Thats it. This is why I am learning from this gentleman. I do not give up because it is a little hard.

Ok. I am sorry to then. I didn't mean to sound so mean. So I do apologize. And clueless does describe it perfectly.

The thing I found most effective was downloading an air horn app on my cell phone. I would push it everytime he went to bite or jump and said no. Now he stops when I say no. Obviously don't use it in your puppies face or close to its ears. Our vet recommended it.
