    Perfect, I have an old house with the old style Woodford faucet like you showed. A kit from home depot for the later Woodford styles and this video took care of the problem I put up with for years! I was putting it off because it only leaked with the water on, and I didn't know what to expect. It was easy with the video instruction, I had to stop the video a few times to see the orientation of the packing seal and the seal in the back but I got it. No leaks!

    Why is your metal insert with the plastic washer so long??? Mine is so short compared to your and it’s a Woodford too.

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, great question. I don't think that I covered that in this video. It is due to living in the North. They have longer inserts where the plastic washer lives. This is due to help prevent it from freezing since then it would be inside of the house instead of outside. It got to -17*F (without windchill) and that could have easily frozen it if it was outside.

    Thank you. Model 14 is similar. A leak from the threaded spigot on mine was solved by replacing part 3008- valve seat rubber. Also need to replace 30560 EPDM packing washer because the old packing is destroyed during removal. Rather than spending $20.00 on repair kit RK-17MH at the home improvement store, see if you can just order those two parts and save yourself the money. All the metal parts are reusable. Mine does not use 30418 check valve but yours might. You won't know until you have it apart, so you might as well just order it too so you have it during the repair if you need it. 30421 packing washer does not work on the model 14. You'll need to reuse your old one or find an equivalent size. Go easy on tightening the packing nut. You can tighten it further if necessary while you're testing the faucet after the repair.

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that’s a great idea. I bought the whole kit bc I wasn’t sure if what the problem was on my grandma’s faucet and I didn’t live in the same town as her. So I got it all and made sure I could fix it in one trip. But yeah, if you can take the time to find the problem and fix it you can order just those parts for sure. Thanks for commenting!

    Great video! I just wanted to be clear on the tapered rubber valve seat. When you install that, the flat side goes in first so the tapered end is facing you when you put in the retainer screw and the head of the screw sits on top of the tapered end, right? And did you use any silicone plumbers grease on any of the rubber pieces? Thanks!

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, if I remember correctly. I didn’t that one last fall and edited it this past spring. It should look identical to how you took it out. The screw and beveled edge together with the flat side against the rod. I did not in this video but I’ve done it in the past. Silicone can help preserve the rubber.

      Thanks for writing. I have not owned a Prier or Mansfield before, so I don't really have a judgement call for those brands. I wonder why the brass screws are slot head instead of Philips head. It is a little tricky reaching in with a blade screwdriver and trying to connect with the handle screw when trying to disconnect the valve handle. Then the blade slides in the screw head slot as you turn the driver. Also, with a Philips head screw, you can push it through the rubber seal and balance the screw and seal on the tip of the screwdriver, making it easier to start the screw into the female threads.

    9:07 when you said to keep it from moving too much on the inside of the house. Just wanted to get your opinion. My spigot had an old hose stuck on and I had to spray some PB blaster and wrench it off. However, when I did the whole spigot moved slightly. Do you think this would cause any issues inside the house? Spigot works fine still, shuts off appropriately. Just some leaking from behind the hand when I turn it on. I appreciate the video and your help!

      Can you explain what you mean by leaking behind the handle? Is this leaking on the outside or inside? When does it leak?

      @@MCFIXIT where the valve stem comes through the packing nut and attaches to the handle. It leaks from there when the water is turned on. However, I’ve noticed it actually only leaks when the water is turned on and the hose is attached. If the hose is removed, the leaking from the handle stops. I’ve also checked the basement where the pipe comes into the house and no obvious leaking inside either. I was just concerned I may have damaged something when wrenching off the old stuck on hose because it took a lot of muscle and the entire spigot moved slightly when I was doing it and I did not apply any counter force with second wrench. It’s probably fine I’m just worried new home owner! Lol thanks for your response and your help!

    How long should it take to drain the water from the main? It didn’t look like it took very long for yours to drain. My waters been on for several minutes and hasn’t slowed down yet….

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You may want to make sure there isn’t a separate main for our outdoor faucets. Some houses have those. It should take at most a few minutes. You can open up a few different faucets to drain quicker (bathroom sink, shower, kitchen sink, etc)

    I tried this fix and still had a slow leak so I ordered a whole new valve stem assembly and installed it, but still get a slow drip. Any thoughts on what the issue might be? Thanks for the video!

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear that. Did you replace the o-ring? That’s where most of the leaks come from bc they are not built to last forever.

    • @TrainLikeMilo

    I have the exact same spigot but I want to replace this with one that has anti-siphon. Problem is that the copper from this spigot is soldered to the main pipe. I would have to cut it but I don't have much room to play around because there the electrical conduits are in the way. The copper pipe is right above the electrical panel!

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds like a pain! I am not a huge fan of copper especially cutting it anywhere near electricity (especially a panel). I'd be very careful with that and probably hire a professional (unless you are one). Your solder will need to be perfect and with little space that's not a good position to be in. Personally, I'd go the route of fixing the already established spigot and maybe do other anti-siphons elsewhere. Good luck on what you choose!

    • @YouTh3r3
      @YouTh3r3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MCFIXIT I'm thinking about that just replacing the Woodford spigot along with the parts inside like the assembly rod. Since the gate valve is siezed also, I will have to make a hole on the ceiling further away from the wall and put in a new shut off valve. Probably with shark bite connect fit shut off valve so I don't have to solder ( due to limited access). I was planning to use shark bite to go along with the new cocksill but I'm afraid with water dripping when I cut the copper. This is probably the reason the previous owner only replace anti siphon spigots on all other spigots except this one.
      What do you think if cut the copper 6 feet away from the electrical panel wall,then connect PEX tubing from copper all the way to the spigot that fits with PEX tubing? Only problem is that the ground wire from the electrical panel hooks up to the copper pipe.

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That could def be a good option but since you are grounded to that pipe with the panel that might not be the best option. That’s a tough situation and makes sense why the previous owners did what they did. Best of luck with your choice in what direction to go!

    It it me or is that faucet a 14 model, and you used a 17 to fix it? Question being are the parts interchangeable?

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they are almost the exact same faucet. Some kits even have both numbers on them. It is a model 14 being worked on in this video. The model 14 does not have Anti-Siphon Protection like the model 17.

    • @MCFIXIT
      @MCFIXIT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. It’s hard to tell without being there but maybe a breakage in the spout somewhere. Maybe a full replacement would stop it. Do you have an internal on/off valve to stop it before you can do a repair?

      My guess would it’s one of the seals on it. I’d do a full replacement just to save time and money if it’s not working. The kit I bought isnt too much cheaper than a new one. I knew the slight leak was from a basic seal. A full leak means I’d replace the whole thing.
