I just sold my 2001 Malibu. Bought for 1200 bucks last year as a first car. Put brand new summer and winters on it, full sound system with a Kenwood HU, 2 10" subs and amp, and a bunch of other stuff. Put in like 2000 into repairs and cleaning. Sold it for $1100 last week. It’s a 2002 Mazda protege and I’m looking to buy the same stereo as your from Amazon but the wiring was something I didn’t know dip about till now. You were clear on every step, plugging the custom made harness into the factory one first, then the other two that come with the stereo are soldered/connected to it thus making the stereo compatible. Thank you for the visual tutorial and clear tips.
Bought the same radio while back from amazon seems to reset clock and settings to default sometimes. Other than that it works fine and plays music and videos from sd card well.

I've had this same head unit in my Mustang for the last year. It still works great after a year. The only thing I don't like about it is that is sounds a bit muffled when the volume is lower. That could be because of the Mach 460 system they put the Mustang, which has 3 stock amps.
Nah, you were talking about cars and what you would love to buy while your phone was listening. You got a cat? No, good. Talk of cat food and see if your phone lists an ad for it.
Good video. Many of these Chinese radios handbrake feature can be disabled or enabled so you can get away without connecting the handbrake feed. But some touch screen radios need this connected. For the navigation side of things. It helps the navigation work out if the car is parked or not. Not just for dvd playback. Just wanted to point that out. Enjoyed your video
I’ve been running the same headunit in my car for the past 18 months, While it’s far from perfect it’s actually “Decent” for the price. What I actually did is put a double adapter on the Reverse parking camera, Then got a Dash cam that predominantly records frontwards but when the cars put in reverse the exact image and guidelines shown on the headunit for the reverse parking camera then gets recorded onto the dash cam. The only thing the manual said it was capable of using the steering wheel audio controls and has the wires for it but haven’t figured that out yet, As it’d be nice to use even if it’s just the Volume up and down and track forward and back and mode on the steering wheel.
The reason you needed to run the external switched power was this year car used the canbus to turn the radio on and off. It's how the radios on these would stay on even after you switched off the car until you opened the drivers door. They make a canbus compatible harness, but it's much more expensive and for a cheap car like this, what you did is fine. The switched 12v line draws almost no power so tapping into the hvac controls is fine, the radio draws its main power from the yellow wire. There is one minor drawback here, depending on the car, (IIRC this is the case with this era Malibu) the warning dings/turn signal clicks are sometimes sent as commands via the canbus to the OEM radio and played out of the speakers, so doing what you did here you lose them, the more expensive canbus harness adapters have a little speaker in them to make the noises.
I bought that same unit about 3 months ago. I use 3m double sided tape to get it to stay in my dash kit and i have no complaints. It’s a pretty solid unit and I think I paid $34 for mine but it was definitely worth it.
@@somcreative I didnt, the version of the radio I bought already had a newer software package. But nothing much different. A bit cleaner and faster than this one.

Epiccomedy it gets rid of the guess work My tints make it so hard to back up my suv, i always guess i have less space then i actually do And its easier on my dads explorer, although his suv is bigger. @@epiccomedy227 who does that, you turn your head then, BOOM! neck cramp. Then you in pain, crash then vehicle blow up. Backup camera eliminates all that.
I bought one of these. The only problem I had was the constant wire melted the Hennessy it came in. I fixed it and had no problems since. Works great. I’m even using the RCA outputs for my sub.
I've been watching your Tahoe videos for inspiration with my Suburban (great videos btw!) and all of a sudden see the exact stereo my Suburban came with, that I spent 4 hours in the SC heat rewiring last week, on this thumbnail. So of course I gotta watch it and see how it worked for you.
mr rod he had to move the gear shifter, its finneeee..... plus a loss of $45.... does it really matter... 🤷🏽♂️ plus it looks stock since their all so minimalistic and shit. Might as well hit something else
@@mrrod805 they also have theft lock though if you remove a gm radio made after 1996 it wont work if you try to put it in another car. It will digitally lock up
Also the parking brake wire needs to see a ground in order to let video play. It is a safety precaution because when hooked up to the parking brake the video will only play when the parking brake it on. If you just run this wire to straight ground it will allow video to play while driving.
Its just a signal wire, the radio gets its main power through the thicker yellow wire. I even left the stock hvac fuse, so even if there was a spike in current it would just blow that fuse. Now I don’t condone tapping off an existing circuit and adding a larger fuse to accommodate. Thats just asking for a fire..
I bought this identical radio from Walmart last Christmas, it was branded as a Blaupunkt Baltimore 650BD and came with two speakers for $49.88. I see ended up buying a $14 backup camera and installed it in my 03 Super Duty, mainly for lining up with my trailer. It works well, only complaint is occasionally when I start the truck and it connects to my phone, it will redial the last number I called. Weird. The reason you have to push a little on the screen is because it's resistive instead of capacitive, but the upside is it will work with gloves So, overall not bad for $50
That's common on 99% of the GM cars. Awake signal for the radio is being send through the communication wire. That's why they don't have power by ignition switch. Got me confused couple of times ;)
Check the sound with the engine running to see if you get engine whine. I put a pioneer touch screen with back up cam, blue tooth, dvd, etc in my 98 Trans Am.
I purchased 2 of these, one for my 97 integra as it had oem radio, and 95 integra on my girlfriends. The bluetooth was exactly what i wanted. Just got done installing 1, bad ass 👌🏽👌🏽, installing back up camera tomorrow.
I installed into my Honda CRV in 2014 a Pyle ( Pyle has been around for I remember seeing the brand for first time in an old JC Whitney catalog back when I was a kid ) system. While I connected everything including something I shouldn't have I unfortunately blew out the lights on the instrument cluster which even if I replace the bulbs it wouldn't work, make sure you know what wires you're hooking up. Personally I soldered everything and used shrink tube over the connections which in my view is the best way of doing it. I installed a Pyle 459 ( I think that's the model number ) everything went fine except for what I mentioned. It does pay to get a wiring harness kit so that the factory harness can plug right into it. The only downside is the camera I purchase was too cheap and it works sporadically, the weird thing is it tends to only work when I get the car washed, I checked out the connections after it started messing up and everything is fine it's just the camera is crap. This is not a difficult thing to do except it's a bit of a pain in the butt installing the backup camera. If you take your time it'll turn out fine. Oh yeah, the owner's manuals was completely useless.
Shows you're not too familiar with installing that many head units. You never plug in an undressed radio harness into the car's input harness. The red 12 volt memory wire is still live and if it touches the black ground wire it will blow the fuse. Which you will need to replace afterward once you find out why the head unit is not keeping its settings. BTW the reason you lack a wire for twelve switched is because chevy factory radios use a data wire to turn on the radio. This wire sends a data signal, rather than voltage to make the radio operate.
Threw one in my blazer ...Used bird house wood as a frame from the Dollar store ..I mean really i glued those suckers to the unit and a few Popsickle sticks as shims dollar store black paint bang fits like a glove

Alot of that junk you get dirt cheap is Chinese knock offs. Not something I would trust hooking up as they are usually of lower quality and poor wiring, that can potentially destroy your electrical system. You get what you paid for.
I might add: If you turn on "debugging" on your android phone you can screen mirror your cell phone via the USB cable, good for GPS or TH-cam. Also if you need to turn the screen off for night driving you click the sun icon on the top right of the screen. I hooked up a subwoofer to this as well, it has been great for the last 5 months!
Pretty good deal except the nonstandard size means it won't fit in any standard double din kits. Which means unless you get lucky, you're going to be doing modifications well beyond what most diy want to do.
Wire parking brake wire to ground, dvd will remain functioning while car is in any gear and is also much easier to wire. Reverse needs to be wired correctly to auto engage camera though when backing up
Sometimes the no name brand decks will actually sound better than a name brand deck. I had a pioneer deck and when it died, I replaced it with a Boss deck and tbh it’s been serving me well since 2015.
I put one on 02' buick . looks nice sounds. The down side. Is the equalizer reset itself everytime. The sceen is bright. But it does have qiuck dim. Light button . plus side the camera works good . especially if got that dark tint.
Thus is the most accurate video of what it’s actually like working in your car “well here’s a problem. I’ll have to figure this out” everything we think should take 30 min takes 4.5 hours
I had a problem with my wire harness as well on my 06 dodge but I connected it to the constant power and have it on a toggle switch for off and on and has worked great for about a year now
I got a harness for my Mustang a while back. The car worked fine, but just stopped in the middle of the road like alternator was bad like a week or two later. Couldn't figure it out when I found that the alternator and connections were good. Folded and took it to a mechanic who had to send it to Ford. Turns out and the wire labeled as mute was actually going to a speed sensor on the harness... Ripped that wire out and had it in the car for like 5 years with no problem...
Not clear on the Bluetooth or loosing connection. My thoughts as a tech was using one of many OBD-II plug ins that transmit via blue tooth. For use in an old truck, running a full “LS” swap, was to see data points on the screen. It would be nice rather than getting my Tech2 out. Playing FM/AM, having a backup camera, then switch to show electronic gauges with various PIDs available would be a package fine with me. Only having a driving camera would be desired, but stand a lone units can be better at night and more storage. Cool video. Goes to to show the slightly better components and software = Profit for the companies that sell touch screen radios, hire a few engineers and the rest is clear money.
Hahah that’s cool the readies is awesome for $45 bucks I got one S8 and is good, it sounds good and it came with back up camera for $45 dollars. No need of $500 radio when a cheap one can do the same pretty much. 🤙🏼
So much easier in Europe to change a head unit. The plugs are standardised, so you just remove the old head unit and plug in an adapter that plugs into your new head unit.
Why? The next owner will be replacing the unit, so the wires will be different. Also all headunits even cheap ones like this will have a sticker with the wires on it
Basic and ordinary is all I ask for. I might give it a go. Right now I have a single din $20 Walmart Duel system but I do a lot of driving for work at night and the bright blue in the unit I have is quite bothersome because I just cannot figure out how to dim it. This one seems like it might be a great upgrade.
Bought a cheap 100 android radio from amazon but it acted weird so i ended up returning it for a duel. Im very happy with the duel!! Apple play works awesome!
Oh and I had the same problem with the install kit....I had to make a couple small cuts in mine (and file down some of the plastic) to get it to fit correctly. You wouldn't notice it if I didn't say anything about it.
Don’t buy install kits! Go to hobby lobby and get some plastic sheeting, any color you want, and cut to fill gaps. Glue or screw solid. Do not cut car. Lol
Your video is good, but it confirms that for a layperson like me, this installment - which I would love to do on my Malibu - would be impossible. Way too difficult.
Tried this about 10 years ago when a cheap chinese touch screen device was 200 and one of those plugs was 60. Only alternative was a pioneer or blaupunkt head unit for 7-800.
I bought one of these in 2014 for 100 dollars at a local store, I'm surprised they still sell that exact model 5 years later with no updates what so ever. It was branded "Marquant"
Holy crap and I just bought a double din Pioneer head unit for my impala, and I saw this exact one thinking, it’s cheap but a risk for me. Glad to see you got it so I can see maybe if thats better than $250 lol.
I think it's funny that it has bluetooth, but has RCA jacks in the back. Reminds me of hooking up my first 8-track player. LOL Want something like it in the 98 Ranger. Can a back-up camera be connected to most aftermarket stereos now days?
here inuk possibly europe too. we dont need to splice and solder our new radios in,we use adaptors, radio connector to iso and iso to quadlock on post 04 cars
Almost always you get a ready-made cord that fits the original audio plug in the car that has the iso plugs in the other ends then you do not have to solder. You just have to search the internet
I drive a 80 regal . Put a Walmart stereo on it works like a charm. Connects Bluetooth in a instant. My buddies 2018 impala tho ... lol have to park , wait & then wait some more . & then it’ll connect haha
Now the car is worth washing., lol. For all that install trouble, I just bought a fm transmitter for under $10, plug in the cigarette lighter and done with it! Back up camera? I just turn my head back or better yet, use the rear view mirror.

And its easier on my dads explorer, although his suv is bigger.
And im really good at parking (not to brag)
Plus the camera comes free, mine was $49.99 its not that bad.
@@epiccomedy227 who does that, you turn your head then, BOOM! neck cramp. Then you in pain, crash then vehicle blow up. Backup camera eliminates all that.
@@solesoul2108 well if that happens then that means you need to eat healthier maybe
Put something similar to this in my truck a couple of years ago, it's been fine, I've upgraded my speakers and added a sub amp.
I bought one of these. The only problem I had was the constant wire melted the Hennessy it came in. I fixed it and had no problems since. Works great. I’m even using the RCA outputs for my sub.
Wow! I wish this would’ve come out 4 years ago. It’s a better bargain out of the box than my slow Kenwood HU.
This was actually a very informative vid! Subbed!
Orange with the white stripe is the dimmer. And usually the park brake wire can be spliced in with ground.
One thing I love about chevys is the easy access of stereos
also thieves
Anthony Damac my mistubishi was just as easy tbh.... only 4 screws instead of the 2. Unlike toyota, you have to take practically the dash apart
mr rod he had to move the gear shifter, its finneeee..... plus a loss of $45.... does it really matter... 🤷🏽♂️ plus it looks stock since their all so minimalistic and shit. Might as well hit something else
@@mrrod805 they also have theft lock though if you remove a gm radio made after 1996 it wont work if you try to put it in another car. It will digitally lock up
im guessing you all are gay since you like chevy so much
Those old GMs used a bus system to turn on the radio. You always had to run a separate ignition wire to the fuse box or column.
Annnnnnd you just tapped it off the HVAC..... Don't make these types of videos if you aren't going to show the proper way to do things.
It was actually the reverse camera wire. This headunit doesn’t have a parking brake wire that I could tell.
Weird.
The reason you have to push a little on the screen is because it's resistive instead of capacitive, but the upside is it will work with gloves
So, overall not bad for $50
That's common on 99% of the GM cars.
I bought the same model a couple of years ago. Was better than I expected for the price
Never installed one in anything new than the 80s really.
@@lsxmatt LOL... Okay.... I'm a former installer.... 27 years experience
One thing I miss on getting old cars when I was younger is learning the wiring to change out the radios.
Threw one in my blazer ...Used bird house wood as a frame from the Dollar store ..I mean really i glued those suckers to the unit and a few Popsickle sticks as shims dollar store black paint bang fits like a glove
It honestly looks stock these days new cars come with a basic screen like this.
For 65 I got a pure android one, better than what top of the line infotaiment on a new car has. No android auto BS.
Oem so much better than any afternarket crap.
@@alb12345672 link for that?
@@gtarules1 www.aliexpress.com/item/32946430734.html over 5K positive reviews. I think it is $50 now! I run Waze, Gmaps, Here, something else too. The main screen displays in kph, that is my only gripe. They could put this in any top of the line car.
Alot of that junk you get dirt cheap is Chinese knock offs. Not something I would trust hooking up as they are usually of lower quality and poor wiring, that can potentially destroy your electrical system. You get what you paid for.
We just ran into this a week or so ago! Never saw it before. On a Chevy truck. Same thing. Blew our mind.
I would be happy with that. I don’t use CD’s anymore since I’ve learned to use Bluetooth
A lot of gm radios of that era have a accessory feed that uses low voltage from a “body” controller. You have to run your own accessory wire.
Thus is the most accurate video of what it’s actually like working in your car “well here’s a problem. I’ll have to figure this out” everything we think should take 30 min takes 4.5 hours
Got the version without the backup camera. We play TH-cam and Amazon prime movies through it by running a usb cord from our phone to the radio
I bought this same unit on sale for 35 dollars a year and some change ago it’s still working for my work truck 👍
This looks better then the stick radio on my 2015 Subaru crosstrek POS!!
You should copy the wiring diagram and tape it to the radio for the next guy!
Why? The next owner will be replacing the unit, so the wires will be different.
Also all headunits even cheap ones like this will have a sticker with the wires on it
The next guy is the junk cars guy. He doesn't care about that.
I wish you showed the reverse camera in use or made any sort of comment on it after the installation.
He did
@@sfharris7749 Definitely didn't. Link me the time of the car reversing.
$45 stereo in a $35 car.
Actually a $150 car
at least he owns the car
It's usually a $2K radio in a $35 car, so this is quite sensible.
lol
Don't forget the $20 dash kit and $5 harness. :)
That should definitely increase the sale price on that thing easily. Great video man!
What's the size of that double din radio ?
I have a Malibu 03 as well....trying to flip
Cheap radios never fit correctly in the standard kits
True I had to shave down the kit on mine
After market never does. You've gotta be creative
Ya dash kits never fit, you either cut the car or cut the kit itself and make it fit.
I’ve had that head unit. Good for the first few months. The internals start going bad and it shuts off when it gets hot. It really becomes a headache
You could probably just stick a small USB fan in the back using the port at the front to keep it cool
Glad to see you got it so I can see maybe if thats better than $250 lol.
that is a a real good fit, looks fantastic . $45 is a great deal and you did installed it yourself.
I think it's funny that it has bluetooth, but has RCA jacks in the back. Reminds me of hooking up my first 8-track player. LOL
Want something like it in the 98 Ranger. Can a back-up camera be connected to most aftermarket stereos now days?
here inuk possibly europe too. we dont need to splice and solder our new radios in,we use adaptors, radio connector to iso and iso to quadlock on post 04 cars
in chevys you have to find a turn on power from somewhere else i usually use ignition 0 or 1 position.
Almost always you get a ready-made cord that fits the original audio plug in the car that has the iso plugs in the other ends then you do not have to solder. You just have to search the internet
That is so much easier an installation than it would be in my 04 Chevy Impala!
I drive a 80 regal . Put a Walmart stereo on it works like a charm. Connects Bluetooth in a instant. My buddies 2018 impala tho ... lol have to park , wait & then wait some more . & then it’ll connect haha
I was literally looking at this head unit 2 weeks ago and was so on the fence about it.
Let's follow that budget radio up with a boss amp and a big time Walmart 15 inch subwoofer let's get shit slamming 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Now the car is worth washing., lol.
For all that install trouble, I just bought a fm transmitter for under $10, plug in the cigarette lighter and done with it! Back up camera? I just turn my head back or better yet, use the rear view mirror.
Installing this cheap car stereo is gonna be a breeze.... I knew he was in for trouble... Good Video..
