These restaurants and bars could be anywhere. I wanted to see what the city looks like, the streetscape, the houses, the parks, downtown, not just food and drink.

I agree. I’m tired of tourism these days always promoting “new innovative” restaurants and bars with the same trendy food and cocktails you can find anywhere from Brooklyn to Denver. Like once I read a travel article that said, when in New Orleans, don’t get Cajun/Creole food, head out to this trendy gastropub instead. I thought the point of travel was to experience something you can’t get at home. When in New Orleans, I’m there for Creole food, not the same stuff that I can find where I live.

I appreciate that it's not just another, "Wow! They serve sandwiches with fries *inside* the sandwich!" food video. If I'm traveling I want excellent food. I don't want a dorky sandwich.

I'm from Pittsburgh. I've been living in Brooklyn for the past 10 years. I'm looking for reasons to move back because the cost of living is lower, but this video just made me sad. That bakery wants to make people feel like they're not in Pittsburgh? What's the point? That city still has way too much self-hatred. Pittsburgh seriously needs to go out and get stoned and drunk for a weekend. It needs to have a one night stand with New Orleans or a few beers with Berlin. Pittsburgh needs more happiness. It deserves it.

As someone who lives near "that bakery" (which also opened two satellite locations in other neighborhoods - one being blighted Hazelwood), I think your anger is misdirected. La gourmandine is a wonderful, French bakery. The video did not bother to explain this, but the quality and selection of french pastries and breads there is not found many places in Pittsburgh. Hence: "it doesn't feel like Pittsburgh [it feels like Paris or France etc].

    • @tigergreg8
      @tigergreg8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Emily, as with anything in life, you get what you give, That also transcends into a positive attitude. I don't understand this self-hatred thing you brought up. I've been around here most of my life and I just don't see that.
I've lived in Calif etc, but Pittsburgh has a great feel to it. If you don't live here currently, where are you basing your judgements? Maybe you need to stay where you are, it just isn't a place for you if that is what you see and feel.

I think what they wanted to show in this video is, that Pittsburgh has a lot to offer, whether it's fine cuisine or just a great cheeseburger or the Arts.
A City does not grow by the aging population, you want younger people to want to move here, and bring their fresh ideas and talents with them.
It's not the City of old, it's grown as he said, and we now have Google here. among other leaders of the Tech industry, one of the best Universities in the Country, CMU, and probably one of the most diverse Cities with it's population and of course, you can find any kind of food your heart desires, and it's good food.
If they would have depicted Pittsburgh looking like a hick town, I can't imagine what you would have said about that.
If you don't like the video, I'd like to see you make one and show us how you would depict our City. Id be happy to watch it. Send me a message when you are done.

They always try to show what people want to see. I left there 31 years ago and it looks like nothing has changed. It was always a city filled with racial prejudices. I am now in a city that also has racial prejudices against Hispanics. It is a shame that there should be this kind of prejudice in any city in the USA. I left but am in a climate where it is not humid, cold, snow, etc. All a person can do is try to associate with people, businesses, etc that are not full of prejudice. There is bad in all of us. Once you realize this the better off you will be. The bible tell us to "Love one another". The State of Pa is quite costly as property taxes and vehicle insurances are double or more than some cities in the southwest. Property values do increase but slowly. In the sun belt areas the values increase more quicky and your investment pays off. AZ is now the 2nd largest are in job development. Hope this gives you something to consider and think hard about.

Although I enjoy living in Pittsburgh, I work in Local taxes I do not mean to insult but my goodness this state has the most taxes I have ever seen. You've got local taxes, real estate tax, per capita tax, the school district and if you want to work a tax for that Occupational tax. i don't know if I missed a few but man. Whoever heard of a state making a person pay to work? Each municipality has there own tax so sometimes one is higher than the other. Philadelphia has the highest I've seen so far..Never seen anything like it.

@@dasteelerfan1 that's not why people are leaving. People are leaving because Pennsylvania is in a transition phase where it's going from industrial to healthcare, robotics, white collar jobs. The people who are moving out are the people going to West Virginia or someplace that is still industrial

Pittsburgh has a long way to go before it becomes a world-class city. The population is still shrinking year after year...way more people are moving out than moving in. It's very hard to get direct flights to Pittsburgh from most U.S. cities and the Pittsburgh "International" Airport is a ghost town, they even had to close an entire terminal due to the amount of airlines dropping service into and out of Pittsburgh. Real estate is very cheap, however, so that's nice if you're in the market for a house in a small city that has brainwashed its residents into thinking that Pittsburgh is a wonderful place.

with you on that one. i moved here from new york city and i love it. you need a car in pittsburgh for sure, public transportation sucks, but the street lights got the motion sensors, so you wont wait long at street lights. South side is a great place to go out and have a drink, got 5 bars for one block radius at least. the city is growing, so there is alot of work available and population is ideal :), not as sardine packed as nyc is. i mean who likes to be rubbing on each other sweaty on the train full of people going to/from work. i did that for 13 years and i hated it, i chose pittsburgh to move to and i'm very happy. :)

Don’t go to these places if you’re thinking about going to PGH! I’ve been living here my whole life and the best places to go are:
    Kennywood
    Ross Park Mall
    Sand Castle
    The Waterfront
Fort Necessity & Ligonier (at fort ligonier, they have GEORGE WASHINGTONS black powder pistols on display.)
    Ohiopyle

NYT came to my neighborhood twice and did video about people and business who been there for no more than two years. They pass the rich history of the people who lived here 30-60 years. So any video by NYT I won't believe it's authentic of a place I've never been.

not really, if you think theres nothing to do there but drink then you've been literally no where in Pittsburgh. I mean theres kennywood, the science center, the stadium i mean come on i can keep listing places to go to. Next time you want to criticize a city, learn about it.

I grew up a 5min drive from “The Point” and was 3 towns away. Pittsburgh is small; its either the Smallest City in the US or the Largest Town in the US. Everything in this video is “New” which is fine but none of this is unique to PGH. (Its PGH not Pitt, Pitt is the U of Pittsburgh). If you want to experience Pittsburgh, you need more than 36 hours. If you only have 36 hours don’t just eat and drink your way through it. Check out Oakland for the Universities and Museums, Squirrel Hill and Shadyside for Architecture, The Strip District our open-air market, The Stadiums and the Andy Warhol Museum on the North Shore, Point State Park and the Fort Pitt Museum, the Fort Duquesne Incline and the views from the top of Mt Washington. Its always sports season in Pittsburgh, Hockey, Baseball, Soccer, and Football, so catch a game. The eating and drinking is how you refuel in-between tour stops.
