Respectfully, I feel like after a certain amount of mental decline, folks just say random things to still feel connected to others. The words make sense and are in order, but the sentences aren't relevant enough for others to really engage. That's why you get things like "I remember when most cars were manual" in response to asking someone how they are. Just roll with what they say - I promise you that the connection is more important to them than a need for context would be.
