The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there. In fact, slavery was an important part of the economy of the ancient world before industrialisation. The biggest proponents of slavery were the African kings and tribes and Muslims. In fact, Africans had to be forced or bribed to give up slavery. Britain made a small percentage of her GDP from slave-produced goods; Britain did very well after she abolished slavery. Of course, the British people of the time knew nothing about slavery, they were too busy working and surviving. Over the years Britain has given billions to these countries in aid. That is enough

Most of the rest of them worked for subsistence level pay in the cotton mills of Lancashire. The reparations grifters can do one. They don't deserve one red penny. The British (and Europeans) that stayed home to build their own country (our ancestors) aren't to blame.
Just as the Africans in Africa aren't to blame for the hoards of criminals flocking illegally across our borders. Now for sure, it's possible the African governments are gaining in some way due to deals with our government to bring in a foreign army/workforce/whatever. It was toward the end and after the Napoleonic conflict we really put our foot down, and went to war internationally against the trade. Arabic history however predates Weatern involvement in the trade by 2000 years, & theyre still doing it today.. where are demands for reparations from The Arabs ?! Or the african states, tribes, whom sold many of these ancestors into slavery; less we forget the continent had a thriving inter tribal slave trade generations before Westerners turned up. Why is it not only Britains burden to end the trade and free your ancestors, but too to pay for it many many generations later ?!!!

Fun fact: if they claim reparations for past slavery because their ancestors were slaves it means the old slaveowners *already paid*
I'm italian. Romans enslaved their own, white europeans, middle eastern people, north africans by millions and for centuries. I'm ok with giving back reparations... but who ask for it has to give back everything romans brought to them in their colonization: running water, warm water, toilets, cement, postal service, lifejackets, bridges, cities, the entire military compartment, the law and even the concept of human rights (and much more things, habits, words).
Send everything to Italy, well packed, leave your human rights behind and you can have your money and your tribal lifestyle.

Norway has 1 trillion GBP in their sovereign fund. It is about time now with the struggling economy UK is asking Norway for reparations for the Viking taking slaves on the British isles.
"Historical accounts make it clear that when they raided coastal towns from the British Isles to the Iberian Peninsula, the Vikings took thousands of men, women and children captive, and held or sold them as slaves-or thralls, as they were called in Old Norse."

Well, in apologising he is ignoring the never ending significant sums of dollars already paid since WWII, which went through Africa, where has this money gone?! We have paid and still pay through the World Bank/ IMF and every other supporting charitable structure. if they cant manage their economic wealth, that’s their problem. Not ours. We have our own problems currently magnified through housing most of African immigration in our sovereign nation! We need the money here to support this, not in another country!

They owe Britain for the ending of the slave, trade. Pay up Caribbean nations, you are only free because we ended the entire Atlantic slave trade over a decade, at the tax payers cost, millions of pounds and dozens of our sailors’s lives. We demand compensation!

  • @ianshearer6813

The UK spent approx. 1% of our annual budget to police and end the slave trade. That’s around GBP 10Billion per year for 50-60 years in today’s money! Yes, around 3000 British people directly benefited from the trade, but the country, and therefore the general population, paid to end it - again, in todays money, that’s around GBP 500-600 Billion we spent to end the trade, and also at the loss of many British sailors lives!

Any agreement for reparations MUST include the clause that ALL descendents from those nations that are living in the UK, are repatriated to those nations.
If the UK is paying another nation for their reparations, then they don't belong in the UK.
