Viva Les Untermensch is a collection of songs from a time and place that some experts believe may even have actually existed. Nowadays we would probably think of it as lo-fi exotica. Or even beatdown loungecore. In any case, Viva Les Untermensch consists of adventurous and unusual music, which is still comparatively accessible.
Inspiration was taken from sounds found on shortwave frequencies, using a radio cassette player bought from Argos for about twenty quid (a Sharp QT27). Lots of recordings of broadcasts from around the globe were made. These included ceremonies from small islands in the South Pacific; pop music from Indochina; chanteuses from French Guiana; stories in Arabic from North Africa; and various strange ‘utility’ and military/governmental signals on shortwave frequencies. These recordings date back to the late 1990s.
