  • Off camera flash can be perceived as a perplexing mystery. Do you need a wireless transmitter? What settings on the flash do you need to know? How does shutter speed, aperture, and ISO affect the flash light? Spoiler alert...it's not that complicated. In this video, I go over the fundamental basics for beginner photographers on how to use off camera flash.
    My name is Matthew and I'm an architecture & interiors photographer based in Kansas City.

    I just shoot natural light because I have no idea how to use the flash. 😅 I’m here to learn. Just got a Ad300 ❤

    Wow! I have struggled to understand flash for so long! I thank you for cutting it down to basic understanding, because this stuff is often assumed. People just tell you all the technical bits as you mentioned. So thank you for making this video. Thank you!

    Hi Matthew. Just wanted to say I recently found your channel and it has been very helpful. I’ve been doing mostly landscape and cityscape photography for about 10 years now. I recently got laid off from a corporate type job and I’ve decided I want to try to make photography work for me full time. From doing cityscapes I’ve found that I really enjoy architecture. More so than I realized. I would love to break into the field of architectural photography. I had my first paying job 2 weeks ago just from sending emails out. I know I have a lot to learn but am looking forward to the journey. Your channel has been a wonderful resource. Keep up the great work!

    Matthew nice video just one correction. You don’t NEED a trigger to fire a flash. The pop up flash can fire an off camera flash optically, I do it alot when practicing OFC.

    Adding off-camera flash to my interior photography has been in my 'to do list' for a long time, but I have no knowledge about finding the proper transmitter and receiver for my Nikkor SB-800 flashlight. Once I tried to buy it, but with the seller's help we couldnt establish a proper connection. (I'm using Nikon Z6)

      In the same boat. I have a AD200 coming, but I do not understand how I trigger the flash and camera while I am 30' away lighting a couch or a vase or a muddy corner. Thanks Matthew, your explanation of how the flash duration fits into the camera exposure was excellent.

    What time of the day was the portrait at 9:23 taken?
    Was the subject in the shadows, and how did you set up the off-camera flash?
    I would love to create this type of portraits, with a studio look in an outdoors environment.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Is it possible to change the power setting on the flash unit itself without touching the transmitter when it is connected onto the camera and it will update the settings on the transmitter ? Im asking this because often in interiors photography, we would take multiple exposures (with flashes) but we don't want to touch the camera to avoid moving the camera position. Thank you for your help.

    • @MatthewAPhoto
      @MatthewAPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      I rarely change the flash power setting on the transmitter. Most of the time I change it on the flash unit directly.

    • @khoily
      @khoily ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MatthewAPhoto thank you for the quick response. I like changing the power settings on the flash unit as well but I find that it always revert back to what the setting is on the transmitter and I find that very annoying. I have the same X1T transmitter. Do you use a certain setting ?

    Hey Matthew - your videos are top-notch! Have been transitioning from many years of RE to more Arch - you have really recommended the Godox AD 400 and 600. Of the two, do you think the 400 is powerful enough for most uses? I have the Canon Speedlights but love your examples using the Godox lights. thank you!! If you have an affiliate link to it let me know - happy to use!

  • @JoshxIZ
    @JoshxIZ ปีที่แล้ว

    Wait I'm confused. With the flash on the shutter speed controls how much of the ambient light is let in, right? (The aperture also controls how much ambient is let in too of course but for argument sake its fixed at f/14 like u had in the video)
    So the only way to make the flash brighter is to increase the ISO? And the not the shutter speed?

    • @MatthewAPhoto
      @MatthewAPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. If you’re going to leave the aperture at f/14…shutter speed won’t affect the amount of flash light that hits the sensor. Now if you start to shoot faster than 1/200 or 1/250, you may run into high speed sync issues, but that’s a while other topic
