That's not even shaped like a trombone mouthpiece. That looks like a cornet/saxhorn mouthpiece from before 1920.

Usually, the difference in cheaper horns VS. higher priced horns rests in the ease of adjustments. The lesser priced horns are harder to adjust... no adjustment screws. But, I'm not familiar with this horn, so I don't know.

You certainly seem to have a had a better time than my first experience with a cheapo soprano, and I'm actually a saxophone player. My friend got an Eastar off of amazon for about $300 and gave it to me after he failed to learn it. I could barely get a sound out at first, and the intonation was so bad I'd hit a key and the note would not make any noticeable change. As I've gotten more used to the instrument and switched off the stock mouthpiece to a Yamaha 6C the intonation has improved. It's still not great but sopranos are naturally worse with tuning due to how small the mouthpiece is and I haven't played on a nice instrument to compare. It's a bit odd but I also switched to clarinet reeds (Vandoren traditional 3's) because I found them to give a much more colorful and full sound. I had to take the instrument to the shop eventually because the octave vents were not sealing on either neck. Low B was also not sealing and there were leaks across the whole range. This is where I realized the biggest problem with cheapo instruments: a lot of shops just flat out refuse to work on them. Luckily, I found a freelance tech that would work on it, but the only big shop in my area only works on the big repuable name brands, and I've heard this from other places too. These instruments are wildly inconsitent. You might get one that works out of the box, and you might not; however, they are made out of low quality materials using poor machinery and techniques. They are bound to have issues down the road, and it might be hard to find someone who will fix them. Personally, I think they can be decent for established musicians who just want a go at something else for cheap, especially if they know how to do minor repairs themselves, but they're horrible for young band students or professionals who need reliable instruments. Great job on these videos! I've been really enjoying these reviews, and I'd love to see more; keep up the good work!

This was very entertaining. But you do your students and their parents a disservice by raising their expectations and not emphasizing the longer term issues these objects have (intonation issues, quality control, soft metals, lack of spare parts). If they can’t afford a real instrument there are often programs to help with used/refurbished instruments. Buying a cheap instrument is a false economy.

Hi . I was given a sax as a gift because it had not been used for a few years by my cousin. It's a Dixon sax, model WWX513, but I haven't found much online. It's a saxophone made in Taiwan, I think around the 90s. In your opinion, is it a good, inexpensive sax? Does it sound good? Has anyone ever tried it?

As much as I love your videos, I have to say I really dislike that you use AI-generated background music. I know that it takes little to no effort to make, and is copyright-free, but it jeopardizes real musicians' (like myself) jobs. Getting royalty-free music that sounds good isn't all that difficult, and it helps support the music community. Most musicians don't make much (if any) money off their music, so they're happy to license it out. Plus, most musicians are very willing to negotiate cheap prices for licensing their music, and some don't even care as long as you give them credit. I understand that in order to streamline your content, it's easiest to just plop an AI-generated song on your video, but it also promotes something that hurts musicians' careers. Please consider using human-written music in your videos in the future.

The way that bell attaches really is cheap. That is your over all tuning slide.... I guess you would have to loosen that attachment and move the bell to tune, not something to do on the go.

I played a valve trombone in grade 9 jazz band because I was a baritone player and we didn’t have enough trombone players in the school at the time, but my band teacher told me if I wanted to play in the senior jazz band i had to learn how to play an actual trombone. I’m so glad he pushed me out of my comfort zone to learn trombone. It was so much more fun haha!

It's really not all that hard to learn a trombone if you play a traditional valved instrument. For those that don't know ... every slide position corresponds directly to a particular valve combination. Easy peasy.
