    The trick with sorghum/sudan is planting it THICK... particularly if you want to make dry hay. The reason for this is, when you plant it REALLY thick, and then cut it when it's about between waist and chest high, it's MOSTLY leaves at that point, with thin slender stems about pencil diameter which dries down quickly and makes the most nutritious and palatable hay. Yeah, it'll grow 8 feet high, but at that point it's MOSTLY stems and if it heads out it's basically cane poles at that point with tough old leaves... the cows will strip the leaves off it and leave the cane poles on the ground mostly uneaten. If you plant it thick and take it off at about 3-4 maybe 5 at the most feet high, it's mostly leaves which is where all the feed value is anyway, and it dries fast (particularly if you take it off at the 3-4 foot high range while the stems are still small). Grandpa always made his SS hay this way and it just beat the pants off anything else.
    If you're chopping and going for maximum tonnage rather than maximum quality, then it doesn't matter so much-- you can plant it thinner and let it get taller to about boot stage just before it heads out and then chop it and the chopper dices up the stems and everything so they'll eat it anyway.

      I'd rather be like this. The only other way it seems to do it is to owe the bank so much they can't afford to sheriff out and they're happy with interest payments.

      yeah I don't watch the "look see how much I spent" channels... no thanks. Every farm town has at least a couple who just like to run around and show off and remind you how much money they can blow or how big a line of credit they can run... and usually will cut their own mother's throat for another hundred acres... just scumbags...

    I plant a good amount of ssg each year and mix other seed with it for different blends but straight It depends on what your going to use it for, but I plant it 45-50 pr ac.! The thicker the finer the stem will be!

      @Mad_Farmer912  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think finer stems end up more digestible also.

    30lbs to an acre. For the Sudan Grass. We planted some this year, and it was planted less than 30. That happened as it was a rented drill, and was told it planted heavy. Either way its up, looks fine.

      If it has the drive mechanism like this one with a rope to pull. Pulling the rope drops the row units and as you drive forward a cam mechanism engages to drive the meters.
      To raise them back up you need to be moving and while driving forward pull the rope and may need to hold rope a few seconds before releasing the rope and the drive mechanism will disengage the meters while raising units to the lock position.
      If there is no rope pull then there would be a hydraulic cylinder between the v frame to raise and lower.
      Definitely don't back up with row units in the ground.

      @@Mad_Farmer912 the sorghum Sudan grass is it a multiple cut heavy tonnage crop? Or a single cut lots of tonnage.

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matthewdavis4081multiple cut. Best planted thick and cut at about 3-4 feet high; if it's planted thick and taken at that point its mostly leaves and pencil-size stems, which will dry down quickly and make excellent quality hay. The stuff will easily grow 6-8 feet high and if all you want is huge tonnage it'll do that, but at that point its MOSTLY thick thumb-diameter stems that are hard to get dry and tough to digest, and the leaves are thick and old, plus if it heads out it RAPIDLY starts pumping everything in the plant into the grain so it's not very good quality at all at that point, since most nutrition is in the leaves. Cutting it at waist to chest high after planting it very thick makes EXCELLENT quality dry hay that is easy to get to dry down since it's mostly leaves at that point, and the stems are small. It will resprout from the cut stem (you want about a 3-4 inch cutting height ideally but it'll resprout from shorter cuts) and regrow again, the amount depending on soil moisture and rainfall...

      Pull the TAPE on the side of the folded over paper cap that is sewn down... one end will pull and unzip, the other end is pulling against the knots and it won't... if you pull and it's not doing anything, pull the other end and it'll unzip.

      There are multiple variations of the 510 but this is the smallest with 13 rows. There is also 16,18, and 21 rows. There is also several different spacing for row widths.
