Not a single time throughout this entire video did I ever get the impression that Karl was showboating or conceited in his presentation of this. His method of presentation was very humble. Well worth the watch.

He even interviewed his betters and cut in blurbs throughout, about himself, not the game. Pure kusokino. Big Karl would never do something so desperately debased.
Agreed. Both a passionate and dispassionate explanation of the speedrun and why it is special to him without boasting. As always, Karl, absolutely legendary.
Karl, always so humble. "Heres all the people putting in the time, the work, the effort to bring the time down to 53. Heres me getting lucky once. Here's Carl putting in the time, the work, the effort." Don't sell yourself short. You work just as hard as everyone else on those leaderboards.
See, this is why Karl knocks it out of the park every time. Even when he's talking about his own record, he still finds time to mention other people in the community to brag about.
Apart from his intro which i despise (legends Etc etc) he really knows his stuff & is fair also interesting, his review on himself is fair & warranted so i am happy to listen & say - Good stuff + keep it up!!

You not only left a mark in this game, you left a mark on the entirety of speedrunning. Karl, you have been pivotal in helping to bring speedrunning to the masses, and for helping to create content that has brought speedrunning to literally millions and millions of people, one being myself. One thing speedrunning was lacking was that middleman to help bring speedrunning to a wider audience of people who don't understand all the in depth mechanics that the speedrunners know. Keep up the great work man!
@@JackMott i know you are pointing out that it’s not luck, its hard work, but real luck is absolutely involved. So many values are being calculated in the background that it requires a lucky run where values match up, allowing you to marry your actual skills to it. So thousands of tries you not even have to be perfect, but you have to be perfect on th run that gives you perfect values at the same time. I’m no speedrunner, but I’m a pilot and mathematician, and the math that has to match the player inputs makes it a very interesting hobby.
You might've actually been implying it -- but I think he purposely misusing 'lucky' in the same way Karl Jobst did. I think he wasn't implying that skill trumps luck, but that the harder you work (or: the larger the sample size becomes), the 'luckier' you get (or: the attempts of success on hitting a, figurative, 'one in a million' chance). As in, the chance of you having a 'lucky run' edges closer & closer towards 100% the more attempts you do (although I am fully aware that you are the expert haha, so please do correct me if I'm wrong). But maybe I'm misinterpreting what they're saying :) @@Stonehorn
I love to death Karl's attitude. Like in a movie, he's this peaceful, old warrior, seated one the mountaintop waiting to be bested by a worthy and valiant warrior.
All the best of luck to Carl Magnus, though it makes me sad when you said that it may be the last record we'll see your initials on. It's like a final goodbye.
"And not only why this record is so special to me on a personal level, but also why its so DAM hard to achieve" Karl, I really think you have peaked on this one
I didn't even realize who Carl-Magnus Wall is until you showed his Twitch username. Calle W is a legend in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He was arguably the best player in Europe before Armada got good.
I love that Karl can toot his own horn for 40 minutes, and the consensus is basically "Yeah, that's fair. He earned that." Keep being amazing, you legend, and we'll see you in the next video.
It's because his objective with the video is clearly to highlight speedrunning and the goldeneye SRC using his own personal credentials and accomplishments as a backdrop, rather than the opposite. He's highlighting other speedrunners coming for his WR; celebrating their victories alongside them with no pretension around his status as record holder. Someone who does that obviously puts the community and art ahead of their own ego, and that's something to be respected.
Karl, I’m sure you wrestled internally with whether or not to make this video, and I just wanted to add my voice to the choir of people who are SO GLAD that you did. I think you really nailed an appropriate tone here, and (in my eyes) the fact that you’re primarily telling us your own story this time-with your own perspective and your own mentality-actually makes this video a particularly special one in your... uh, filmography? Or body of work?? Catalogue??? Hahaha. You know what I mean. Thanks for all of these excellent videos, you absolute legend!
For other speedrunners, if you ever find yourself not wanting to pursue a WR because you're not a top player, just know it's only too late when you give up.
Just started playing this game after like 15 some years, I'm 32 now, somehow this video came up on my TH-cam. I've never felt so happy to watch someone else's struggle for perfection at something they love, let alone one if my favourite games of all time! Truly astonished to hear your story and how humble of a person you are all while telling your story! Good job! You deserved it even if it was half luck in the end on top of the unimaginable skill and knowledge needed to gain that extra .2 seconds or whatever it is from each boost! Lol Major props!
Yes, this is him right here officer, we got him. We finally caught Jack the ripper. they even admitted to it with their username... Sorry, i couldn't pass the joke...
I knew I had heard the name Wes McKinney somewhere 😱 Grats to him for his success and many thanks for making my career a possibility. I use his creations professionally everyday and never realized he was also once a speedrunner. What an absolute legend 👏
My biggest takeaway from this video has to be your maturity and humility. The way you talk not only about yourself, but the players that you were competing with at the time is extremely refreshing to watch. Being able to admit your immaturity when you were younger, and then growing into one of the most genuine people I've seen on the internet is something you should be proud of. The run was impeccable and the luck had to roll your way eventually. I'm excited to see Carl-Magnus Wall get a 52 of his own and I hope you two get to share that monumental achievement in real time. Thank you for all of your hard work you put into your videos, it absolutely does not go unnoticed. Cheers, you absolute legend.
A gigantic achievement, narrated and explained perfectly. I'm always in awe at your narrative capabilities! I don't think I have more than five TH-camrs who can have me glued to the screen for 40 minutes straight with their content, and you're definitely in that five. Good job, and Good Luck to Carl-Magnus!
Other peoples' biggest regrets: - Not having children - Not asking that girl in highschool out - Not focusing on their studies Karl's biggest regret: - Not trying harder to become GoldenEye Champion in the early 2000s
World-class achievements are cool and all, but my greatest admiration goes to Karl's maturity... The fact that he had no problem and didn't make a big deal out of the things he thought when he was younger, even when they are things that he regrets or that no longer represent the kind of man he is nowadays... It shows he has grown as a person throughout the years, and I hope he too is proud of what he has become.
I love how speedrunning has such a healthy relationship with competition. Speedrunners are always excited to see competition, always are genuinely happy to see their records broken, and are always congratulating each other when it happens. That's why I love speedrunning. The people are almost always great.
This ABSOLUTE LEGEND talks about how important this record is and then encourages everyone to go support the guy trying to tie the record. Karl, you are a beacon of positivity.
I never thought I would this interested about the speedrunning community and their achievements. You're great voice for it and it's nice to know about you're personal achievements as well, gongratz again! 🎉
I only discovered your channel earlier this year, I immediately got hooked. I recently started speed running myself so of course I started finding some running content, I love seeing cheaters called out and methods dissected, and I’m a huge history buff so your videos were easy to get into. I have a lot of respect for you as it is basing on your point of view and integrity trust come through your videos, but I had no idea you were such an accomplished speed runner yourself, which just adds so much more validity to everything I’ve already seen from you. I love that, and I love your content.
When writing history, the historian has to guess persons motives and emotions. What drove them to do decicions. Thank you Karl for opening out how you felt doing what you did.
Didn't think about it like that, but you're absolutely right. Really awesome to get the perspective of this absolute legend that will no doubt go down in history!
33:14 Read the chat here. This run is so optimized that we are talking about 0.1 second differences in speed, and yet the runners are SO IN TUNE with speedrunning this map that not only Karl, but multiple people in the chat started celebrating BEFORE THE RUN WAS OVER. Saying stuff like "Fast" and "Is this it?" Once again think about the fact that the difference between success and failure is 0.1 second or less, but they can feel the difference between a 00:53 and a 00:52 before even seeing the results. Also I want to mention how HAPPY they were even though they weren't the ones breaking the record. They were so happy to just see SOMEONE do it. THAT is a community right there. It makes me so happy to just see a group of people all come together to finally succeed at something so difficult instead of fighting against each other so that they could be the first. All the time and strategies were put together just to see if it was possible. And it was. OTHER MESSAGES: "Lets go champ" "Yo dude let's go" "POG" "plz" "this is it" "goooooo!!!" "MATE" "Was that clutch" only THEN did they see the results. also "CANCEL DAMCEMBER BOYS" is hilarious to see
i think it probably has less to do with just feeling 0.1 over a 50+ second run (there's not even timer to compare to) and more that those guys all know what to look for--they can see when you get 3 boosts, when the gate opens fast, and so on
Everybody knows that Todd Togers has the longest untied world record. Everyone here wishes they had the skill, nay, the mental fortitude that Mr. Togers has
I'm not a speedrunner or involved in record-setting communities, but that reaction after so many hours of practice, and so many years of history with Goldeneye in general, is so palpable. The sense of accomplishment and relief is wonderful! Well done
Karl, you're one of my favorite content creators, and this video is a perfect example of why. On a video where you talk about your greatest accomplishment, you go out of your way to give the utmost credit to those who made it possible, you explain your history with the game and the level itself, you explain your reasoning for going for the accomplishment, and most importantly of all, you talk about it in an incredibly humble manner. And, for that matter, Dam Agent 52 is so monumental that no one will ever blame you for making a video about it. You most certainly earned this one, you absolute legend.
absolutely legendary. i remember when this happened. i’m so glad you’ve rid the initial hype out until now by making such good videos ever since. thank you!
@@fennglordd6365 That's exactly who I thought of, as well; his Punch-Out! World Record Progression video was epic, and the fact that he didn't even mention that he was in it until the very end was legendary. Truly awe-inspiring, and the record simply speaks for itself.
Karl you're the real legend here. Your channel is a testament to your knowledge and wisdom in the speedrunning community and beyond. I truly appreciate how thoughtful you are. I'm from the States but I'd still love to grab a drink with you sometime. In a world of fake people I'm glad I can come to you for honesty and well-thought-out discussion.
Your reaction even got me emotional. I can't imagine that feeling, not only the feeling of getting a world record but getting one untied and on top of it all one that nobody thought could really be done and stood for so long. Your skill and dedication is humbling and I consider myself lucky to be able to watch it happen. Thank you for everything Karl

Karl is, as always, being too humble. He is without a doubt an Absolute Legend! Not only for his amazing world records, but because his videos show his passion for speedrunning, its history, and the runners who dedicate so much time to it! I'm so glad to see him give himself the credit he's more than due given how he's always among the first giving praise to others.
So nice to se Karl give himself an honest pat on the back. He really deserves it at this point, especially considering all the good he's done for the speedrunning community and how supportive he is of his fellow runners.
I know he hates tooting his own horn but Karl is one of the greatest speedrunners of all time and I am all for listening to him talk about his accomplishments.
Thank you Karl for the amazing content you make. No other person has been able to make speed running as interesting, intense and understandable. I’ve personally been a fan of the more casual side for quite a while, but ever since your content became more popular I’ve found myself in conversation about the topic more often. It’s awesome to me how much the view on speed running has changed over the last few years (both for myself and general opinion). So thank you for giving us a new few on things! And here’s too me Swedish Carl bro 🇸🇪 and his great journey! 🍻
Love to see the raw reactions to new WR like that. Always hits some feels, no matter what game, no matter who it is. After so much effort and so many runs, finally seeing that "impossible" time pop up, is just insane. Absolute legend.
your real achievement in speedrunning is being the central figure responsible for its growth. theres like you and 3 other youtubers who have truly contributed to bringing so many eyes towards speedrunning, and you are by far the most significant. i dont think ill ever get involved with it, maybe at some point just to "prove" that i could at least match records in some games, but i will likely always have a casual interest in it and watch videos you and others like you produce. you engage viewers with good storytelling and brings out interest in a super niche hobby.
There's something about having the untied record on the first level, first difficulty (as Karl says, the way we were all introduced to the game) that makes it extra special. It's a special level from a very special game.
It's like the difference between being the fastest in a 100m race vs being the fastest to hop around in a circle on one leg. Everyone has played that level, in general, and it's always been a huge target in speedrunning, specifically.
You are an absolute legend of a content creator and you have every right to blow smoke on your own records and achievements. I love how in every video you have a song that brings back a thousand memories playing in the background. You are a kind and humble man. Keep on keeping on. Absolute legend 💕
When I watched your 52 run I really loved your reaction after the time appeared on the screen. Just the fact that it took a 40 minute video to explain everything that went into the run and why it was such a big deal does truly say how mind blowing and unfathomably insane this accomplishment is, and also that the level of your dedication and persistence to invest attempts for such a long time (while ALSO knowing it could take well over 1000 hours). Never played goldeneye myself, but this video, like any other content of yours, it was really entertaining to watch all the way through all 40 minutes of it, thank you so much, Karl
Well earned. I love your channel, as well as Summoning Salt, because you guys both speed-run and you both have so much love, respect, and dedication to the gaming and speed-running community without the theatrics. Edit: I’m in no way diminishing anyone who covers speed-running but do not run, route, etc. or otherwise are active in the community; I just have a different appreciation for your channel and channels. Karl and Summoning Salt just happens to personally be my favorite as speed-runners who can break down what’s happening in layman’s terms. Anyways: I’m a long-time viewer and I’m proud of you. Great work on both the content, research and reporting-especially going into depth on the history, controversies and the facts-of speed-running as well.
Don't speedrun, but I love hearing about the process of what it takes to capture these WRs and the new strategies that are figured out over time. The amount of dedication to the grind is impressive and when you spend all that time and get that payoff... the reactions are priceless. Thanks for your work!
I love your the self reflection and honesty about the growth you needed to undergo to become the stronger more secure person you are today. I relate a lot to that and I hope others do too
Karl, I want you to know that although I don't have any personal interest in speedrunning, your style and enthusiasm has made your channel a guilty pleasure of mine.
30:57 if we go by the 50k and 53secs every (unsuccesful, yet ok) attempt takes, that's 30.7 days of playtime. that's without the time it takes to reset and without considering we can't actually play 24/7 so if you play about 8 hours / day and 7 days / week, this is likely going to take 3 months (without reset timings, no work, no holiday, no mistakes, just perfect grind) so for people with some kind of life, this will probably even take a good player over 12 months (or 24 months for 1/100k odds)
Just wait, someone s gonna Livestream sitting there at most likely posting time, ready to comment not 1st but just " ." As proof. Then declare record right below
Your speedrunning achievements will not be forgotten. If the runs themselves slip into obscurity then you have definitely left your mark in the coverage of speedrunning. I also love hearing about your records or when you have a ago at a new one at the end of the videos.
Can we appreciate that Karl has been like the Lorax speaking for the trees? He loves his passion so much that he has fought the good fight to keep it from being dirtied and corrupted by fraudsters and cheaters and moneygrubbers who don't give a damn about anything but their own greed and fame.
What an amazing video! This is why I love speedruning. Its not the records, its the attempts and the story's behind it. Thats why I love your videos so much. I'm not into 007 so I had no clue about anything of this, if I knew about the record I would have just said "nice!" and move on. But there's so much story behind it. Many years later but great job! On the record and awesome videos that brings these story's to people like me who didnt know them.
Don't ever apologize for this video Karl. You are a Legend. We are all proud of you for this amazing achievement of dedication to study. You're a wise and dedicated documentarian that deserves recognition. Thanks a million Karl.
Karl, I’m not even that interested in speed running but I like your channel because of your engaging narration. The ending here where you’re showing the best sides of sportsmanship and community is also great. Best of luck in your future record endeavours!
Has Wes ever mentioned his time playing Goldeneye? I think it'd be cool for such a successful guy to have it be known that when he was a kid, he was one of those "speedrunners" and "video gamers" older people always think can't be successful if they're playing video games. And finally, Karl tells us how simply fucking amazing he is at Goldeneye.
While I didn't know this Wes guy before, yeah, I agree it'd be nice if he did that. Also, kinda unrelated but you made me remember of this one guy, hbox. He was a Chemical Engineer while simultaneously mantaining his performance as one of SSBM's top players, and then afterwards got to be the rank #1 player of the game for 3 years in a row. Another example of a successful IRL legend, but this time the other way around I guess, haha
A different user (raafmaat) mentioned that Wes mentions his speedrunning history in his bio on his website. I checked and, yep! It's a short mention, but it's the majority of his "Early Life" section. XD
Karl keep doing it man. You're an inspiration to so many of us. I'm not even a speed runner just some old man now who played the crap out of Goldeneye 20+ years ago. Praying for your health and if need help ask for it bro. 🙏
I have a great deal of respect for your commentary on speed running, Mr. Jobst. In my opinion, you are the authority on all things speedrunning. The fact you are, yourself, an accomplished speedrunner is testament to your expertise. I also think you should consider doing ASMR if you haven't already. Your voice is incredibly soothing and helps me to unwind at the end of a long day. Between the relaxing overtones of your speech, your professional demeanor, and the wealth of information you have to share I look forward to each and every upload. Thank you, Karl, and God bless you!
Man KJ is such a good sport about Carl hunting his record. It really is bittersweet to be excited for a fellow gamer tying your own insane record that has stood untouched for so long. I think its because we all know the excitement KJ felt when he got the record, and you cant help but want someone else to experience what that actually feels like, especially after so much hard work.
What a wholesome mini-documentary :D You GoldenEye / Perfect Dark runners are a different breed of cat! All the respect. Many awesome moments and highlights and great camaraderie over the years!
Hey Karl, thank you for this video man. I appreciate how vulnerable you made yourself. I also love how you finally admitted you’re a got dam king of this.
I absolutely love how this record means the world to you and yet here you are, shining a light and giving another competitor some extra-moral and coverage. Much love and respect to you, Karl.
You will always be remembered as the first one Karl, because it really is THAT big of a deal-record, no one would (or at least should in my opinion) be alowed to forget who pionèered that achievement! I honestly dont know for how long ive been subscribed to your YT Karl, but its several years for sure, but I found out that you were a top rated speedrunner after watching a video that you had made were you quickly mentioned it. The point im trying to get to, is that in my mind, AND without a doubt for a lot of others too, you will ALWAYS be a top runner and a true LEGEND of the game, and I will NEVER forget about you... Legends never die!!
I remember seeing that video not too long ago and it's just incredible that you managed to beat the world record. The fact that you can commentate speedrunning and also speedrun yourself is amazing
The 35min setup was well worth it, and made even more wholesome and satisfying for anybody that has watched the video about how much Karl wanted to set a record in the 64 magazine. this may very well be the nerdiest thing I’ve ever consumed.
Karl, you are my favorite TH-camr. Your videos are always excellent, your delivery is great, and everything is made interesting enough even my wife who doesn't play video games watches your videos with me. We both agree: you are a legend mate!
I still think you're the best speedrunning TH-camr, you really blew open the doors of this community to everyone and honestly explained how it all works. You are a true legend yourself, and tbh this video is well deserved.
I find it particularly interesting that quite a few of the most influential goldeneye speedrunners are actually Dutch. A tiny country like the Netherlands are host to legends like Wouter Jansen, Randy Buikema and Steven Zwartjes.
You/your videos are truly amazing. I think it's exceptionally wonderful to be able to see the journey, and the results of an achievement well earned. Thank you, Karl Jobst!
This is the greatest record ever...I'm hoping someone makes a movie of your life Karl, its so dam(agent) amazing. I love watching your videos and I hope you continue to set records and help our communities see real success. Cheers...
Thanks for providing a well-informed view from the inside! I'd be hard pressed to think of another TH-camr who understands so acutely the topic that they are covering who covers it so well. I'm more of a completionist than a runner, so I really appreciate the speed running timelines you provide, the importance and significance of each, and how much you value these achievements.
Fuck I love your videos. I had little to no knowledge/interest in speedruns - then came you. I don't run myself, I just now realize the beauty and dedication of the truest of runners. It's art. Thank you for sharing with us.
I've never attempted a speedrun of any kind before in my life, nor have I really ever had that much interest in it (aside from your videos).

Even if/when the record is beaten, take solace in the fact that it took a Carl to take down a Karl.
Indeed, take a Quantum of Solace for that.
I'm honestly surprised by how much scrolling I had to do to see someone make that joke
The worst part is that Karl means man (like, manly man), so it took a Man to take down a Man...
I love to death Karl's attitude. Like in a movie, he's this peaceful, old warrior, seated one the mountaintop waiting to be bested by a worthy and valiant warrior.

I didn't even realize who Carl-Magnus Wall is until you showed his Twitch username. Calle W is a legend in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He was arguably the best player in Europe before Armada got good.
I was wondering if that's who that was. I recognized the name as well.
Crazy!
So sweet how he actually wants him to tie the record so another can feel the bliss that is getting a 52, such a sweet guy that Karl is.
Its about the journey not just the destination...

Hi Ant!

I knew I had heard the name Wes McKinney somewhere 😱 Grats to him for his success and many thanks for making my career a possibility. I use his creations professionally everyday and never realized he was also once a speedrunner. What an absolute legend 👏
check out his about page on his prefessional website, he mentions the speedrunning achievments!
Same. He's made my career what it is. I have his book within reaching distance at all times. Absolute legend.
Doing Big Data Science Coursework would have been a'lot harder without him.
I'm just starting to learn Python and Jupyter notebooks to move my career up from sql monkey. Glad it all exists!
"Wait, Karl is the absolute legend?"
"Always has been."
Other peoples' biggest regrets:
- Not having children
- Not asking that girl in highschool out
- Not focusing on their studies
Karl's biggest regret:
- Not trying harder to become GoldenEye Champion in the early 2000s
damn those other people are losers, they should be more like karl
i mean hes not wrong
Hes got his priorities in order
World-class achievements are cool and all, but my greatest admiration goes to Karl's maturity... The fact that he had no problem and didn't make a big deal out of the things he thought when he was younger, even when they are things that he regrets or that no longer represent the kind of man he is nowadays... It shows he has grown as a person throughout the years, and I hope he too is proud of what he has become.
I honestly thought this record was going to be "the fastest time to win a lawsuit against Billy Mitchell"
That probably goes to his mother who he likely sued for the discomfort of being born.
Aaaaaaand then you learn about their terrible nature.
This man is truly an absolute legend
And it was.
OTHER MESSAGES:
"Lets go champ"
"Yo dude let's go"
"POG"
"plz"
"this is it"
"goooooo!!!"
"MATE"
"Was that clutch"
only THEN did they see the results.
also "CANCEL DAMCEMBER BOYS" is hilarious to see
i think it probably has less to do with just feeling 0.1 over a 50+ second run (there's not even timer to compare to) and more that those guys all know what to look for--they can see when you get 3 boosts, when the gate opens fast, and so on
" *Dam* , what a run!", he said, before the screen faded out to a world record.
Truly a magical moment when it happens!
Anyone else realize if it takes the new guy more than two months to beat the record, Karl will move from 9 to 6 in longest untied

Karl saying he doesn't talk much about his own records is like saying the Pacific Ocean is a bit damp. I've been waiting for this video for ages.
His ego is so low he had to raise everyone else to absolute legends to gain the confidence to make his youtube xD

He knows, he's just staying humble. Like the legend he truly is.
30:57 if we go by the 50k and 53secs every (unsuccesful, yet ok) attempt takes, that's 30.7 days of playtime.
that's without the time it takes to reset
and without considering we can't actually play 24/7
so if you play about 8 hours / day and 7 days / week, this is likely going to take 3 months (without reset timings, no work, no holiday, no mistakes, just perfect grind)
so for people with some kind of life, this will probably even take a good player over 12 months (or 24 months for 1/100k odds)
