    I remember this dude was complaining his feet hurt, not his voice when he streamed 20 hours straight.

    honestly it is a testament for how good you practice voice safety. You sing soooo much and 5 times is a small amount considering.

    Justin, you're doing god's work. This is so helpful in a lot of ways to all us fellow self-taught vocalists!
    I've lost my voice 3 or 4 times through my whole singing/screaming carreer (~15 years) and for exactly the same reasons you mentioned in this video. All trial and error. I also used to overproject a lot during vocal tracking because I have a certain vision for my music and often relied more on emotions and building interesting vocal textures rather than technique. Still learning to balance those elements to make it sound the way I want it to be and feel comfortable doing it.
    I was an extremely insecure vocalist back in the day: hated my timbre (especially when talking), limited range (A2 - G4 in full voice) and used a weird mix of "fake fry" and actual fry that surprisingly sounded kinda good in the mix (I tried to mimic the vocal styles of bands like The Ghost Inside, Gideon, Remembering Never etc.), but was very inconsistent and I experienced vocal fatigue after 2 hours of "screaming" like that. It was my main studio technique and for some parts I used really overprojected false cord screams which I wasn't happy with, it sounded terrible a lot of times (kinda like The Crimson Armada 2009 lol). Another big mistake is trying to sing/scream like the guys who have different voice type and NATURAL range. When I was 18, my dream was to scream and sing really high like Matty of MMF (The Hollow and Challenger era) whose speaking voice is very different and about an octave and a half higher than mine. A few years later some guy showed me The Plot In You and told me I sound a lot like Landon (had no clue who he was at the moment). Some First Born stuff when he was pretty mediocre vocalist and I didn't like his screams. Then I listened to CYWYCB and was completely flabbergasted by the rapid progress both in vocals and instrumentals. I tried to sing some parts and found out that it's much easier on my voice and my tone improved a ton. My range started to extend a bit and I learned a lot of new vocal styles.
    In a hindsight, I realize that my toxic perfectionism, mental health issues and lack of experience and knowledge slowed me down FOR YEARS. And seeing guys with wider range made me really depressed. "What's the point of even doing it if I will never sound as good as my favorite vocalists?" - that was the thought I was coming back to times and times again.
    I got addicted to drugs and eventually dealt with s u i c i d a l ideation in 2018, one of the worst years of my life. Then I was finally diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar and PTSD. It all came together. A few years later I finally buried the hatchet with my family (the source of trauma) and some time afterwards noticed that strain/lump in my throat feeling starts to eliminate. I've got much more confident in my vocals and just happier overall. Keeping your mental health in check is just as important as practicing wisely, eating good, sleeping well and exercising. That was my story. Hope it helps somebody.

    When I was a beginner, I did all the mistakes you talk about. Overprojecting was the killer for me, because I was trying to learn metal vocals and I never realized how loud I was. I was shouting, not singing. So that cracked my voice for 3 weeks and I was so mad that I couldn't sing anymore. Hereupon I learned to sing with less air and got my first level up in singing.

    Fuck yeah justin, awesome video. I lost my voice for 1 day a while ago. Friends making fun of me for that too. I was super scared and revisiting my entire arsenal of techniques and care, but when i added up the total hours of vocal usage (and maybe a bit of alcohol) it totally made sense. Maybe 5 hours of overexcited socialising, while making the funny noises, followed by going to a 4-band concert and screaming along for the whole bit and then afterpartying was a bit too much. Ofc. Thanks for being youtube's greatest vocal coach!

    Posting this at the perfect time. It's scare acting season and I'm on day 5 in a row of 7 hour shifts. I've had to change up my technique and shift gears from different screams, different laughs; it got to a point where my scare had to be just standing menacingly in the shadows with a Kubrick stare. I'll have a break Monday and Tuesday but then we go into a 7 day run for Halloween.

    This is very good and timely video for me, been having odd on-and-off troubles with my voices for a few years but lost to back to back like a week apart a few weeks ago. Saw an ENT and they said no damage to the cords themselves but then I got sick, been coughing my head off and while I'm now recovered my voice is not back to 100 percent. Would love to see a part 2 or follow up specifically for vocal recovery strategies!

    @Fae_Winter ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’ve been sick before and not been able to talk, but sometimes I will still be able to sing (I don’t test my luck though, haha). Sometimes I’ll try to use my classical singing techniques to speak loudly, as well. I’m not sure if I’m lucky, but my voice usually physically starts to hurt a tiny bit as soon as it is on the verge of getting overused, so I’m able to stop using my voice immediately, before it gets worse. Also, I drink tonnnns of water when I don’t sleep as much. My vocal cords may not be able to recover due to lack of sleep sometimes, but at least they can stay hydrated! lol 😂😅

    • @MystifiedSky39
      @MystifiedSky39 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A common misconception is that water or teas etc act instantly on the voice but from an anatomical perspective, liquids never touch your vocal folds so “hydrating” quickly doesn’t do much, you need to constantly stay hydrated at all times. Unfortunately water and teas aren’t miracle drugs that can immediately fix you

    • @Fae_Winter
      @Fae_Winter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, most people have a common misconception that tea helps the voice: it does not. Only plain water can do that. And it is so vital, as you said, to stay hydrated all the time. What happens when sleep deprived is the body needs more water than normal. It messes with our hormonal signals for retaining water in the body. Sleep deprivation also causes muscle weakness which can put a strain on our vocal cords as well, since we use our body’s muscles to speak or sing. It can take anywhere from a few minutes all the way up to 36 hours to fully rehydrate the body by drinking lots of water. But one has to take into account the proper electrolytes for hydration as well.

    Hey Justin! Didn’t you say you lost your voice when recording Of Nothing also?

    • @HungryLights
      @HungryLights  ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I did not "lose" my voice when I recorded Of Nothing. I blew it out. See, there is a difference between the two.
      Losing your voice is when the true cords get so inflamed that you sound hoarse when you speak. It takes quite a bit of over-use and whatnot to get there, and it usually takes several days or longer to recover.
      Blowing out your voice is just muscle fatigue from pushing too hard. You can blow out your voice in less than two minutes, and it can come back in like fifteen minutes if you rest it. With that being said, if you blow out your voice enough times, it will turn into vocal strain, and then you could lose your voice.
      Hope that answers your question!

I don't have any burning feeling in my throat anymore and I am more comfortable transitioning from falsetto to chest voice to find where the grit is, doing Tarzan's and other fun silly sounds. frustratingly I still feel my throat tiring out pretty quickly while I'm practicing, (even when I am trying not to project very much) and some tightness in my throat. usually, I start feeling early sings of this like 20-30 seconds in. should I be concerned that my technique is still dangerous, or should I consider that I maybe I need better vocal warmups? thank you for your time.

      I actually came up with it myself. It works awesome! But you should obviously still do it into your elbow or something to stop the spread of germs :)

    Do you know if you can do extreme (or just normal) vocals with asthma?

    • @HungryLights
      @HungryLights  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Of course you can! Will Ramos has asthma, and he is one of the most notable screamers in deathcore right now!

    Damm, your guidelines are dope!! Didn’t realize you were black and heard you say the n word. All that aside, in your honest opinion is it too late for anyone at the age of 30 to master screaming.
