I just wanted to say, wow! At almost 300k views! I have to thank everybody who watched this tutorial and made its success possible! It has been three years since I filmed it, and when I watch this video back now in 2020, as a touring vocalist and professional vocal coach, I definitely regret teaching people some of the things I taught them in this video! For anyone who wants my current analysis: 1. 1:46 - [false cord gutturals]. Back in 2017, this is how I did my gutturals. In 2018, I started doing something totally different-overcompressed glottal compression, and that is what I use to achieve my gutturals today. It is very complicated, but I might do a tutorial on it eventually. 2. 2:55 - [projecting with a dropped larynx]. Unlike what I said in the video, this technique has nothing to do with your chest. You drop your larynx to make your voice resonate deeper (it feels like it resonates closer to your chest), and you just project your speaking voice. I also put some glottal compression on it to get a little more rasp. 3. 4:44 - [whistle tone with throat rasp]. This is really complicated, dangerous, and I should not have included it in the video. It is a whistle tone, but you use throat rasp to "safely" distort it. It is not combining with the "lizard scream" from my first video, because that scream is false cord, and this rasp is not false cord. This rasp is a lot closer to the "Cookie Monster" rasp I teach in #5, which is bad for your voice. 4. 5:42 - [glottal compression with a dropped larynx]. This is not really a scream. It is basically #2 but with glottal compression to distort it and make it louder, then you maintain one note to give it that "scream" vibe. Like #2, it has nothing to do with your chest. Be careful not to over-project it. 5. 8:10 - [throat rasp]. This is the technique people are talking about when they say, "Don't do that Cookie Monster sound." It is really bad for you. I probably should not have put it in the video, but at least I talk about how dangerous it is. It has nothing to do with the "lizard scream" from my first tutorial. 6. 10:01 - [straining your voice]. There is nothing safe about this technique whatsoever. You are literally just yelling until your voice strains and creates distortion. I should not have put it in the tutorial. This will destroy your voice very quickly. The guy from La Dispute sounds like he is doing fry, not vocal strain. I had no idea what I was talking about when I included this in the tutorial. I even said, "You're not gonna' hurt yourself doing these because it's your natural voice." That is completely untrue. You are over-projecting your natural voice to the point of strained distortion, which is the opposite of safe. 7. 11:45 - [false cord with glottal compression, but you slightly raise your larynx to squash the resonance]. This one, I think I explained okay. I just messed up some of the terminology. 8. 13:58 - [fry scream with whistle overtones]. I think I explained this one pretty okay as well. I probably should do a tutorial on fry screaming, because I missed a few key points on how to even achieve a fry scream, let alone add a whistle tone on top of it. As of December 11th, 2020, I have never included a fry scream in my music or on stage. Everything I have done has been variations of false cord and glottal compression. 9. 15:33 - [false cord rasp on mixed voice with a raised/constricted larynx]. I completely botched the explanation of this technique. The rasp is false cord, not the "Cookie Monster" rasp from #5. Also, while it can be done in chest voice, I demonstrated it in mixed voice. 10. 17:46 - [false cord rasp in head voice with forward placement]. I completely botched the explanation of this technique as well. Again, the rasp is false cord, so it has nothing to do with #6, but you push it up into your head voice and over-project it, which is not that great for your vocal cords at all. Then, you push the resonance forward so it resonates more in your nose. Overall, this technique is a fantastic way to blow out your voice, and I should not have included it in the tutorial. 11. 18:47 - [compressed false cord in mixed voice with weird tongue placement]. I use this technique all the time now in Tallah. It is completely safe as long as you do not over-project it.
