Balerion is the ancestor of Ser Pounce and all future cats of the RedKeep. Its an intergenerational story. Those cats rule the RedKeep

I'm surprised we didn't get a scene of the Eyrie and then the entire Vale LOSING THEIR MINDS that a Targaryen Princess has gone missing. What if she fell, is she dead? Did the Vale Mountain Clans kidnap her? What if that wild dragon ate her? The entire army of the Vale should be scouring every corner from the Bloody gate to each of the fingers to find her.
Also. When Rhaenyra said "a son for a son" did anyone else shout at the screen "You killed Jaeherys!!!". Like, sure, she didn't want it, Daemon didn't want it, but it still happened. In that moment of desperation you would think Alicent would try to use that death. Though i guess in the show Blood and Cheese has the inverse effect. After the death of her son Helaena is more cogent and is now considered a possible dragonrider.

I was especially PISSED by what they did to Alicent, who forgot how her grandson’s head was cut off and agreed to give her son up to die. She trusts Rhaenyra after 20 years of fighting? After Rhaenyra and Daemon made "Laenor's death" seem like they killed him on purpose so they could get married? After her grandson was stabbed to death in his bed? She doesn’t understand that by inheritance, all THREE of her sons will be considered Rhaenyra’s competitors and will be executed? That her father, lover and brother will also be executed? That Damon will achieve this? Not even her granddaughter is safe either, since she is Aegon’s only child and his heir.
God, they made a complete fool of her, made ger Rhaenyra's simp. They just made it up that Alicent and Rhaenyra had lesbian feelings for each other ( which was change fine at first), and now they break everything so that this “divorced couple who still loves each other” (this quote from the director) would sacrifice their children for each other. Just some fanfiction of a 13 year old girl, I’m sorry that the actors were forced to play this.

The whole prophecy thing, I think GRRM did it so well with Cersei Lannister.
He introduced the prophecy from Maggy the Frog in books 4 after Joffrey and Tywin were already dead and House Lannister went into a downward spiral.
Which in the hindsight made the prophecy not matter that much compared to what Cersei did. Those kids are dead and her getting killed by Jaime (I supposed) aren’t because of some frog lady said so. It’s mainly because Cersei is such a piece of sh*t that she turned everyone around her into enemies in order to subvert said prophecy.

I wish they would stop bringing up the white walkers! We all know that the white walkers were defeated in LESS THAN A DAY & by a 90 pound little girl with a dagger no less, so the writers reminding us of this constantly just HURTS! In season 1 this show was removing the stain of season 8 for me and it was refreshing to see them steer away from Game of Thrones but now Condal is trying to make this show Game of Thrones and I can’t stand what he’s doing with it. And I can’t watch Rhaenyra anymore. This isn’t the Rhaenyra from the book. Lord knows why the writers thought a more peaceful, calm, diplomatic Rhaenyra would be more entertaining than the Rhaenyra GRRM crafted. The woman lost her son, lost her baby, lost her father, lost her throne, lost Rhaenys and was nearly ASSASSINATED and that STILL wasn’t enough for her to want blood. What will at this point? They constantly tease us with these “mad queen” face expressions she keeps making or pretending she is becoming more dark, only for us to learn a few scenes later that she actually still wants no bloodshed and that she hasn’t really changed or been affected by the events happening around her. Corlys had to convince her to fight FFS! Like, f*ck me. She actually said that the new dragons she gained she planned on just using as a deterrence. JUST END ME ALREADY. And 20% of the episode was focused on a girl boss androgynous pirate who no one gives AF about! And who seemed cartoonish to me. And I don’t care about Rhaena. She makes the same pikachu face all season and we’ve already seen the storyline of a child being belittled because they don’t have a dragon and then gaining a dragon and that child’s name was Aemond! Why would I want to see that storyline again instead of Nettles? I cautioned fans all season to wait for the finale before passing judgement and now I have egg on my face. Thanks, Ryan Condal.

@@StefunnyStrange You are getting that Rhaenyra though. Her refusing Alicent’s request outright, spurning her attempts at redemption and demanding she kill her own son as penance for Luke was absolutely indicative of a more ruthless and blood hungry Rhaenyra, as did the dinner scene where she told them what they’d have to do.
I’m not saying it didn’t take an ungodly long time to get here, but the pieces are finally there for what’s about to change in S3.

And she told Coryls that she actually just planned on using her new gained dragons as a deterrence! Like, FML. I’m not gonna pretend we weren’t misled, we were. What was the point of her turning around to face the camera in the season 1 finale and looking enraged? What was the point in the way she glared at Aemond after he was outmatched with her 3 dragons? Where was that payoff in any of that? This was the biggest blue ball finale of the century.

He wouldn't have accepted what he was shown if Alys just hit him with it the moment he showed up at Harrenhal. He needed to learn that he doesn't really want the crown first, then that there is a greater purpose to supporting rhaenyra on top of that to really cement his choice.
Daemon only went through his therapy because Alys made him do it, he wouldn't have otherwise, he didn't want to change, or didn't know he wanted to change. I agree with Preston that it would have been better if he'd just gone through his personal introspection therapy trip and made the choice to support her solely based off that without needing to know about the events of GoT to do it. But the prophecy shit is already introduced to the story and it's not sudden out of nowhere "divine intervention" making him change his mind, it's been divine intervention since he got to Harrenhal

@@OfficialRedTeamReview no where in my criticism did I bring up race or gender. I could give you many criticisms about the show but thats not what I was talking about in my original comment. I just didn't think it made sense how you blew off all criticisms of star wars shows when the acolyte was awful for many storytelling related reasons but then immediately complain about people writing off your criticisms (which I think are valid) for this tv show. I think people can make jokes about gender though when the creator Leslie Headland explicitly says its the gayest star wars show. If we can talk about what the showrunners for GoT and HotD say behind the scenes then we should be able to do the same here. You may not agree those are valid jokes or whatnot but to write off every other criticism with that show entirely and then strawman it with "fire in space" just seemed a bit hypocritical. I watch a lot of people you'd probably deem as right wing and some make obnoxious jokes to some people but they all have substantial criticisms and to write them off as sexist and misogynistic without actually arguing anything is exactly why you have to run cover for your valid criticisms as well. Even in your response you conceded the point to (I dont look for that much realism in star wars) okay so we both agree its a somewhat valid criticism and is an error in the writing. My entire point with my original comment was that I just wanted to point out how you're cultivating the very environment you seem to be complaining about. But if you want to write me off as right wing for pointing it out and implying I'm now sexist and mysoginistic for having a nerdy discussion about our sci fi tv shows then I guess that's cool too.

There were a lot of moments in this season I really liked, but when you stop to see where it all led..
We started this season with war looming, a power struggle in the green faction, Rhaenyra preparing for action, Daemon preparing for action, the Lannisters, Tullies, Starks, Hightowers all preparing for action
And we ended with everyone preparing for action lol. I feel like all forward momentum fully stopped after the Vhagar/Meleys/Sunfyre brawl. It’s like they ran out of budget for fights and decided to just mull until seasons end
    Edit:
Last note, my main gripe is, why did it have to take a full season for Rhaenyra, Daemon, Alicent, Aegon, Helaena, etc. to decide to have some resolve. These things should’ve been staggered a bit so we can have forward progression in some arcs as other arcs are in more of a character building moment.

People in Spain did this all the time, moving from Muslim to Christian kingdoms and vice versa. In the Middle ages, nobody _really_ cared - not until the 15/16th century.

For the love of god... *It's not a mystery!* I keep saying this. And I get head scratching replies. Repeat after me... "THE. WRITERS. ARE. BAD." Look it up yourselves. Look at the imdb. FIRST OF ALL... The "writers" do not write every episode together. THIS is why the stories are so disjointed. Look at the number of episodes each writer is credited with writing. Which means that Ryan... the writer of The Rock's miserable releases from the 2010, Hercules and Rampage... is the only person writing and overseeing the writing for each episode, in both seasons. EVERYONE else is used for specific episodes. Which is a HORRIBLE idea. I can see having different writers in each season. But only if turnover is needed between seasons. You need writers invested in the greater arc of the characters they're writing. Step by step. ESPECIALLY with an adaptation like Fire & Blood. Where the character work is EVERYTHING. EVEN IF THEY DON'T GO OFF SCRIPT.
The writers themselves are NOT GOOD. Certainly not on the level that Game of Thrones demanded in it's adapted seasons. They do not have the credits for a prestige series. Besides ONE writer, writing ONE episode of The Crown. A few of these writers went on to write The Acolyte. Garbage.
Just look at it. It's bad. It's a bunch of people who have spent too much time in therapy, attaching their own erratic reactions to the characters, as they experience the plot, outlined by George. Completely focused on the wrong aspect of the character work. Random behavior, clearly out of character with what had been written of each character prior to their sudden left turns. Except for Aegon. He's the ONLY CHARACTER that has a consistent arc, from start to finish. And... (drum roll)... that's because... HE'S DUMB. And it remains true, that characters are only as smart as the people writing them. So they can write the idiot boy-king. But they can't write anything consistent for an intelligent character.
And that's it. That's all it is. There's nothing else to speculate on. 🤷

Love your Davos and Tyrion analogy in comparison to Alicent and Rhaenyra.
Which brought me to the main problem with GoT later seasons and HoTD this season: Characters don’t act like people and more like action figures smashing with each other.
Just look at Tyrion and Jaime. I know they are fan favorite characters but the other characters are too lenient around them.
    - Why wasn’t Davos even mad at Tyrion for killing his real son but was very murderous at Melisandre for burning Shireen?
    - Why was Jon so ok whenever he’s in the presence of Tyrion, Jaime or Cersei? He’s so nonchalant about them albeit these three belongs to a family that murdered his father (Ned) and his brother (Robb) while also giving his home to the Boltons. Not to mention that two of them also the parents of Joffrey, who killed Ned, and conspired to cripple Bran. Jon was so enraged at Ramsay for killing Rickon and raping Sansa or Olly for being manipulated into killing him but felt nothing towards the Lannisters who committed genocide against both of his families.
    - Tyrion was so smug in front of Davos about how his wildfire killed Davos’ son and ruined Stannis’ invasion but somehow folded at the sight of Daenerys using dragon fire to execute her enemies. Tyrion also made fun of Theon being Stark’s hostage which caused Theon to betray the Starks afterward and ended up being tortured and castrated by Ramsay and yet later on, Tyrion then played a victim and chastised Theon for making the nonexistent joke of him being a dwarf and saying that Theon deserves all the suffering he got.
Tyrion in a show is a piece of sh*t just like everyone else in the Lannister family but the show didn’t aware that he’s a bad guy and tried to portray him as a good guy as hard as possible.
    - Remember when the Lannister™️ sword Oathkeeper gave Brienne so much trouble whenever she encountered the Starks and their sympathizers? In the show, she went into a brawl with the Hound to take custody of Arya. In the books, she was forced to kill Jaime to prove her loyalty to Catelyn or else, Cat will kill Podrick.
Some way, somehow in the later seasons, Davos has no issue with Brienne at all. You know, a golden hair lady wearing a Lannister armor wielding a Lannister sword who killed Stannis. Not to mention that Theon trusted Brienne easily after she saved him and Sansa albeit the last time he trusted a rescuer, that same rescuer chopped off his dick and turned him into a slave.
Now the characters in HoTD also stopped acting like people. Alicent is the worst case of them all.

Writing decisions are made only in order not to repeat the source material and compete with the author of the book in the ability to write characters and stories. Only they are noticeably losing and I now understand exactly why George was so disappointed and refused to participate in writing the third season.
Writers make changes without thinking why the plot was written this way in the first place in the book. They also lose cause-consequences relation and motivations of the charachers, while doing it.
But to be fair, I'm asking too much from this show-because I would remark that the characters are not consistent with the SHOW canon either. For example: They made Alicent and Rhaenyra hate each other for 20 years (just like in the book) but suddenly both of them want peace? Both of them don't care about the deaths of their son&grandson? Really? Then why didn't they try to make peace BEFORE everything got worse? Previously, way smaller things made them ignore each other for years but now they don't care about safety or their children. Alicent for 10 years was holding a grudge because her father got fired but here we are - nobody cares for Jaehaerys! Apparently, Rhaenyra even forgot that Luke was avenged ! She wants another son! Brilliant! ( By the way, the writers already confirmed that the sept reunion was a fanservice,I suspect this meeting is too. Very bad the show was ready to sacrifice all the logic just to please fans)
Even Aemond&Helaena small scene ruined Helaena's characher and broke the lore - from what point did she start to understand her prophecies soo clearly ? Why did she want to run away with Alicent 5 minutes ago if she saw everyone's fate already? Doesn't she care for her family ? Because it looked like she wants to use her powers only for herself. And how long have dreamers been astrally moving into other people's heads?
I really don't want to discuss this episode much and I can't. The only scenes I like were with Cole, Gwayne , Ulf, and Tyland. And I know the reason why: the secondary characters have a superficial description and little screen time, so it's impossible to screw it up. By in the mix with good acting (and it must be admitted that almost all of the actors in the show are excellent) it gives these characters advantages of being interestingly and consistently written. Also, note that all those listed characters are all male, which means they are allowed to have flaws in this show. Yes, that's right, for some reason "women don't want blood, they are all peaceful" narrative is repeated over and over again. It made them all bland and illogical.Even Alys, as other women in this season, is just another smallfolk champion because "women want peace, men are violent". Seriously, why can't women be just people? You know, have flaws, desires and bad habits?
The only main character that got fair treatment turned out to be Aegon, and I suspect that happened thanks to incredible work of the actor Tom Glynn-Carney. Because other charachers just don't make sense, so he must be an exception. I mean, deaths don't have any affect on charachers, previous motivations were forgotten or replaced with prophecy stuff. This season feels like a huge filler because nothing has consequences and weight, we see the same scenes over again, and the show refuses to show both sides of the story equally bad.
I don't know if season 3 , even with incredible writers and help of GRRM, will be able get out of this hole. I think the damage have been made and it is useless to hope that the story will become better, only if not on the condition that they ignore season 2 almost completely.
This episode deserves 2/10 just because of the colossal damage they did to the whole story& message by ruining Alicent. The season as a whole 5,-8 or 6/10 and I'm being generous.

You'd really have to ignore huge parts of season 2 to be able to redeem the show in season 3, but I have no hope. The writers can't be trusted. Disaster.

I personally am still quite enjoying the show (It's absolutely not without major flaws and I do have my criticisms, but it's holding together pretty well - unlike the boys season 4... which was pretty bad...)
TL,DR: I think Preston has been consistently missing some pretty obvious character work/motivations and then going off on wild tangents built on his misconceptions.
Couple of things I think they've got completely wrong (and feel free to correct me). Keep in mind: I have never read any of the books (and never will, because GRRM will never finish them), so I don't know how things are differing from the source material (and don't care all that much). Also, almost everything I know about the magic system, I learned from Preston (the other bit is Glidus and Schwifty).
Daemon is already off the "I wanna be king" train when he has his convo with Broome (He calls Broome a turncoat and scoffs at him when he says Daemon should be king and then just walks away). The lesson he learns in his last vision at the weirwood is understanding the burden that Viserys (and now Rhaenyra) and that maybe he shouldn't be making their jobs difficult by being an insecure little bitch. But by that point (by my read), he's already learned his primary lesson - that Viserys chose Rhaenyra. Importantly, the last vision does not make Daemon accept Viserys' choice, it simply makes him respect Rhaenyra's responsibility.
That being said... the dagger prophecy shit has always been stupid. The only times it was remotely useful is when it was used to show Daemon that he was never Viserys' heir and when Rhaenyra uses it to justify her holy war shit when she's getting her messiah on. I don't need to hear about the Others... ever again. Also... this man just saw the end of dragons and didn't blink an eye. Approximately half of the final vision is very dumb and should never have been there (CW Bloodraven, Dany, the Others). The rest could be salvaged with some tweaks.
Helaena reaches out to Daemon because she believes Aemond has to be killed (see both of her conversations with Aemond about going to war - she knows he burned down a town because he was insulted and she knows he tried to kill Aegon) and obviously Daemon is the only one mad and powerful enough to try something like that. (I thought it was a bit of a jump for her to go from dreamer to telepathically inserting herself into other people's dreams and talking to them... so that's not good... but her motivation is incredibly obvious.)
Alicent is (rightly) unconcerned about Aemond's wellbeing... for obvious reasons. And let's be honest, her one consistent character trait has been being entirely disgusted by Aegon, so when she's trying to save herself, Helaena, Helaena's daughter, and generally the entire capital... Aegon is a small price to pay when she's desperate (also let's not forget that he is in fact a rapist and generally a bit a shit). And about Daeron, I'm pretty sure she's decided that it's best she not inflict herself upon him (see her convo with her brother a few episodes back). Though I agree, she has too many scenes this season. As far as her going there in the first place, it works a lot better than Rhaenyra going to Kingslanding (which was unspeakable dumb). However, for Alicent, she's not really risking anything other than her own life.
Jace being upset about bastard dragonriders just makes sense. Jace has been shown to be forward thinking and invested in the legitimacy and security of both his mother's and his own claims.
The Larys and crippled Aegon thing is pretty obvious if you put two and two together. Larys doesn't have any chance at power with Aemond in charge - so Aegon is his ticket. So he needs Aegon alive and functional. So he needs Aegon to *want to be* alive and functional. The cripple speeches are supposed to be ingratiating himself to Aegon. And maybe he does feel genuine sympathy and kinship with his struggles, but that's obviously not his primary reason.
"Rhaenyra let those small folk burn alive and get eaten by a dragon!" Yep, she thinks she's the chosen one. It's one hell of a drug.
"Oh there's no freewill! It's all prophecy and fate!" Such is the way of prequels and tragedies (Andor is the exception).
But i will give him that the Sheepstealer plotline with Daemon's daughter is ridiculous. Comical. I almost began to wonder if Arryn ordered her men to not look for the girl in the hopes that she would run off and try to tame the dragon...
And I almost jumped out of my seat when Cole finally mentioned that Alicent saved him from the consequences of his wedding murder (Another one of those flaws).
    fin.
I really do like Preston's content though, I just think he's been pretty badly off on some of his HotD 2 takes.

Are they trying to retcon S8? I cannot take them seriously when they seem to think none of us remember what happened there. How can they take themselves seriously? I really think the best actors are these writers and producers who come on with a straight face lying to the audience. Either that or they are so delusional they believe their own lies. Oh and sorry but IMO the whole Tyland section this episode was terrible because it also came from nowhere and went nowhere. GRRM does use "apology", so words of glaringly Greek origin are not entirely off the table. Sansa straight up said OK in Game of Thrones, now THAT bothered me too, lol.

Thank you gents (and the chat) for taking a break from politics this week. I know what I’m signing up for when I watch these streams but it was just nice for a break.

Tbh, I think it’s a bit overreacting to say the show is ruined

Funny seeing you all as down on season 2 as I was on season 1, while my own opinion has mellowed a lot. Last season the inconsistencies in plot and character were so bad they outweighed the great individual scenes and acting for me. This season the stupid scenes were not as bad, and the characters just a bit more consistent, allowing me to appreciate the good stuff more.
It still all falls apart on closer inspection, but at least I'm enjoying myself while I'm watching and not thinking about it too much.

Counterpoint to Prestons take on the Daemon vision: When watching I thought it gave him more agency. Note that having grand visions is something that makes Targaryens seem more connected to Aegon, hence the Song of Ice and Fire only being known to kings. He could have seen that vision as proof that he is the conqueror reborn or some BS. Instead it humbled him and made him get his shit together. Then Broome comes along and gives him a last way to power, to which he immediately realises its not for him. I found it actually a pretty great way to finish his arc with two final tests.

Something I just realized, why isn’t Cretan Stark getting the Daemon visions? He’s the one who’s really important, it’s a descendant of his that actually saves the world. Dany does literally nothing but help the white walkers.

They gotta bring in Quaithe and Kinvara. They're gonna meet up and discuss their plan to explain why they weren't in season 8. "Hey, if the White Walkers ever attack, it's very important that we gotta go to this secluded place to do this secret thing."
