For those wondering, you do not need to know anything about the fate universe before playing fate extra. It and its sequels kinda exist in its own universe where they has almost no connection with any other works in the franchise. Although there are characters and concepts that are introduced in other fate and/or type moon works. It explains everything you need to know about fairly well.

IMO I do recommend watching the main 3 routes in Fate/Stay Night (DEEN FSN, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel) before playing Extra, specifically if you're choosing Archer as your Servant. Archer is the same one in F/SN and repeatedly references the original animes/visual novel, particularly in highlighting the differences in the characters. In addition, the player can appreciate the returning characters a lot more should they go through the original routes first.

I actually really enjoyed the combat in Fate/Extra. It helps reinforce how important it is to learn as much as you can about your opponent. If you follow the individual arc stories to completion, you get a heads-up about the opponent's moveset, and as such can plan your moves accordingly much easier. It's the difference between getting mercilessly bopped and effortlessly shredding, for the majority of foes. As a result, it puts a lot of emphasis on listening to the story and following it's beats, since sometimes you can completely miss arc progression if you aren't paying attention. It also reflects how, in the series lore, it's extremely important to know who the enemy Servant is, as that knowledge informs you of their capabilities. Fate/Extra Record will likely be more accessible, and hopefully will adapt that theme somehow, but for what it is I actually thought Fate/Extra's combat was really fun.

The Cold Steel games do have some social sim elements, it is a bit light with more of a focus on the combat and story. One thing is it is part of a larger series, while you can play the game without playing the other games, you really get more out of the game playing them, since 3 take place before the events of Cold Steel, and 2 happen along side the events of Cold Steel I and II (those two games are also not out in the west yet)

      @koheikyouji 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hmm. Since quite a lot of people are looking to pick up The Lost Child, I'll just go ahead and copy and paste my comment from above in hopes it helps
''I posted in a comment just a moment ago, but if you do get the game, beware of a couple of game breaking bugs
In combat your allies will randomly learn skills and activate them in place of what you told them to. If a demon learns a skill before the actual tutorial for learning skills, the main girl who cant be removed will never lear a skill for the rest of the game.
Basically, make sure she is the first thing to learn a skill by reaching that tutorial. Otherwise, reload.
And the other that I found is if you do the optional 100 floor dungeon.
If you beat floor 80, do not exit the dungeon to go and save like I did. Instead, go up to floor 81, and use the exit on that floor instead. Leaving on floor 80 causes a bug that disables the stairs to floor 81, meaning you can never ever beat that dungeon. I lost a good 60 hours due to this and still havent gone back.
Hope you enjoy the game despite this.''

Yeah I like Caligula as well despite its many flaws. The combat is too easily cheesed, the social quests are a logistical chore with little payout, and the graphics are questionable at best. But the story, characters, and themes of escapism and mental trauma are tackled with precision and heart (The game's creator was an actual psychologist!) And by far the best quality? The music. Each area had its own track tied to each boss that were not only certifiable bangers, but also served representations of each of their characters and their inner struggles. That kind of seamless integration is rare these days. The sequel is on my wishlist and my hopes are high.

I played the lost child a few years back and I remember liking it a lot, though I saw where it had some rough edges. I played it on normal difficulty, so take it with a grain of salt, but I thought the game was easy enough, Enoch just kind of blows everything out of the water once he gets some decent skills (watch out for that bug that will make Lua unable to learn skills ever if Enoch learns a skill before the skill tutorial.)
I loved the occult theming throughout the game. Investigating paranormal stuff by talking to citizens and then going to the dungeon and fighting the demons responsible, It was just kinda my jam, you know? I agree with some astral designs being pretty lame, but they do get better as the game proceeds. Also, it takes a really, really long time for you to be able to remove an astral from your party, was it just me? That feature didn't seem to unlock until way late in the game.
I was impressed that the creator of el shaddai ended up having to buy the rights to the game so that he could make the lost child. I guess he just loved the world that he created and wanted to expand it himself. I guess you could say he wanted to give it some TLC. LOL

I'm really not familiar with Fate as a whole, but I think I have an idea why the gameplay of Fate/Extra is made this way and it's to reinforce the idea that you need a very solid planning of your moves. You and your opponent are in a 1v1 duel and are sort of equal in strength, the one who can outmanouver and outsmart another wins, so they tried to emulate the mind games that come from trying to predict what your opponent will do and how you wanna condition them to respond but in a turn based system

The heroes equip themselves with a special ra-seru that attaches to their arm and allows them to absorb seru to summon as magic. I hope I dont get in trouble for spamming, but i'm just giving some advice for people wanting to pick up The Lost Child:

Hell the main social mechanic of the Ar Tonelico series, The Cosmosphere, is similar to Social Links since its all about getting to know and explore other characters although Ar Tonelico goes deeper in depth since you do it by traveling to worlds inside the persons mind sinilar to Palaces. I would recommend the 2nd if you want the best experience if you ever want to check them out.

The Mary Skelter games from Compile Heart are also pretty solid first person dungeon crawlers. Originally vita games, they're also on switch and PC now. Mary Skelter 2 also contains the first game if you buy it on switch/PC.
The games take place inside a living tower, complete with meaty doors and walls with eyeballs. The characters are all from various fairy tales, like Rapunzel and Sleepying Beauty.
It's standard turn based combat with each character getting a set of classes to choose from. The twist comes in the bloodstain mechanic. Hitting weak points or overkilling enemies stains team members with blood, which they can consume to enter a personal powered up state, or can lick off other team members to give the whole party an effect. Staining the dungeon itself with blood is permanent (it even persists if you leave the dungeon and come back) and affects things like light and encounter rate.
There's quite a bit of content to be had: a few more mechanics I didn't mention (like invincible bosses that chase you through dungeons), a story that is pretty trope-heavy but has a few twists, both EN and JP voice acting is available, and several difficulty options. Overall, I had a good time with it.

good thing nyarly didn’t talk about the japan-only follow-up game to Fate/Extra, Fate/Extra CCC. it’s kind of like the Sakura route in Fate/Stay Night whilst Fate/Extra has the metaphorical Saber and Rin route. it’s the same game, but with a slightly different UI. it also has a fourth servant you can choose (but i ain’t telling who it is).
my guess as to why it wasn’t localized was probably due to the SPICE (read: lewd scenes) it had.
if you wanna tackle it yourself, then you have to put up with pure japanese text and pray to every god there’s a translated walkthrough of it. the translation of the game isn’t done yet (but it might be this year, who knows), and choices matter much more here than in the original.

Another game exactly like SMT is Demon Gaze Extra. It is by the same developer who made The Lost Child, Kadokawa Games. There is an enhanced remaster for Switch that came out very recently.
Demon Gaze Extra is a first person dungeon crawler that is extremely difficult even on normal. You catch demons using what's known as the demon gaze. The catch is the longer you have a demon out, the more demon resource they drain. If the resource hits 0 then the demon will go berserk and attack you. As the MC you can have up to 3 demons out at a time. Demon Gaze Extra has some nice mechanics. Though unlike The Lost Child or mainline SMT there is a small selection of obtainable demons that are captured via story missions.

A game I half though would be on this list was Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. If you like the Dragon Quest monster designs and the idea of building a party out of them, then give this a look.
From what I recall the monster fusion system is interesting because there are benefits to fusing monsters as soon as you can (when they reach level 10) since monsters get stronger with each iteration of fusion they go through, gaining a "+1" to their rank each time. However its also worth holding off since they pass on some of the skill points they have earned and can offer stronger versions of their skill sets if you have enough skill points invested into them.
I might be misremembering some of that since I haven't played it in a while, but that's how I remember it.

Megami Tensei games have been the golden standard for JRPG's, so I'm surprised more of them haven't caught up yet in terms of quality-of-life improvements.
That being said, are there any JRPG's or indie RPG's with a similar style to older SMT games? I'm not talking monster-collection per-se, but a more grounded, dark or mature setting? Or anything that's got that dark, violent OVA charm to it? Maybe with a similar urban or 90's cyberpunk setting? I'd love to know it more inspired games exist out there. I saw a couple of comments talking about it, but I'm surprised he didn't mention Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth duology as well.
I mean, the DigiLab in these games is pretty much a Velvet Room clone, both in gameplay and story.
I'd be curious to see Nyarly's opinions on these games if he ever checks them out.

I didn't see the "Name your child" prompt at first and I was like "who is this gunslinger that shares my name and should I get this game just to get her"

I think some might like Fire Emblem 3 Houses. You choose how to spend your limited time each month either battling or building relationships with students. You can recruit new party members, and you even fight demonic beasts

      Or just Fire Emblem overall
I downloaded Path of Radiance this summer, but haven't touched it since because Dolphin kept saying "Now game will likely crash or hang, enjoy"

Posting this BEFORE watching the video, but to anyone wanting to pick up The Lost Child, DO be aware that it does have some game breaking bugs that still havent been patched. Ones that I discovered I will write as follows. Its a good game...I think? Just...beware:
In this game your demons learn skills semi-randomly during battle. IF a demon happens learns a skill before the tutorial TELLS you how learning skills work, your main ally (Basically Nemissa from Soul Hackers who can never be removed) will never ever learn a skill. So reload and try to reach the skill learning tutorial without your demons learning anything.
Next. The optional 100 floor dungeon. Should you choose to tackle this, once you beat floor 80, DO NOT LEAVE, like I did. Its a tough floor so youll naturally want to exit and save, but dont. Leaving on floor 80 locks you out of the rest of that dungeon, meaning you can never beat the postgame. I lost maybe 60 hours of dungeon crawling to this and still havent gone back to redo it all. Go up to floor 81, and use the exit on that floor instead.
I havent played in a long time, but if I remember any other bugs, I will edit them into this comment.
I do not want people going through what I did.

I've wanted a Furi or No More Heroes boss rush game for fats for so long. Honestly, with the current way of cramming 100 servants in each game, I'd want one with just 7 and maybe some secret ones.

I found Lost Child here and long by now since completed the main story and slowly working through the bonus dungeon. It's a solid first person dungeon crawler actually though I bought it on a deep sale (10 bucks or so). I would recommend anyone else interested to do the same as ehhh it doesn't really feel like a 50 dollar game, but it's certainly worth a look on sale. The characters are interesting and there are many cool designs for encounter/allies! Happy I got it. Dungeons aren't amazing, but I do think all generally serve their purpose and are good enough with some cool puzzles and gimmicks.
