I just got a bolt R. I was going to get the 883 sportster, but the price difference made up my mind. I got the crash bar, passenger seat, sissy bar, passenger pegs, for a lower price. Plus it’s a Yamaha, well known for their reliability.
Just scored a low mileage 2014 for $3500. I stopped riding sport bikes 10 years ago and was curious about getting back into riding, the Bolt seemed like a low risk option at the price. I hope I'm happy with the power, I'm not expecting much, but my last bike had 90+ ft/lbs of torque and over 100hp.
Just bought a 2020 bolt r-spec. Used but only 1500 miles on it. First ride home was a dream for me after not riding in almost 7 years. This video helped me narrow down my decision
This is exactly why I bought the Rspec as well. I am also a shorter person and i LOVE the fact I can stop at a red light and put my whole foot down on both sides. Good observation!
Helmet, gloves, & long pants - always. Sandals or shorts, never. But a full riding suit on a hot day? Your chances of dying of heat stroke are greater than having an accident, unless you have an accident caused by the deliriousness of heat stroke.
I just got the Bolt R spec a few weeks ago. Traded in my Yamaha R6 that I owned for 6 years. I love the bike! It’s comfortable, it looks amazing, it sounds good with a pipe on it, and it makes enough power. Not to mention the price is good.
MrMoneyHelper I haven’t experienced any of the heat issues. No part of my body has gotten hot due to the engine. It’s a very comfortable ride. This includes city riding when sitting at stop lights and the bike getting warm. I personally haven’t had issues with the air filter sticking out but that could but easily resolved anyway. Just through an open air filter on it. I have the R spec piggy back shocks and I think the suspension is great. The speedometer is a common complaint, and while I agree it’s odd to have a circular display but display the speed in a square box, I really don’t mind it and I appreciate the simplicity. I don’t have issues reading the speed. All in all I have about 1,500 miles on the bike now and I still love it and think it’s a very good cruiser bike
Bought the 2014 r-spec new. Left shock started leaking fluid and was replaced under warranty. Front tire needed replacing at 5000 miles, battery no longer charged at 3 yrs old. My son purchased the 2017 bolt and it rides and performs better than r-spec.
I picked up a similar bike just recently, the yamaha scr950. I have to agree that the mirrors need extensions is nothing else just to be able to see around your elbows. My only other complaints would be that my right knee is always into the air intake because of its positioning and the position of the right peg just feels so much farther out then the left. Other then that it's a great, low maintenance bike with plenty of power but they could've given it a much better speedometer/tach. Cheers.
I find a leather jacket keeps the heat of the sun out better than fabric. And cuts the wind better. And can pull the zip down a bit to get airflow. I wouldn’t go back to fabric.

I watched both your videos on the Vulcan S and on the Bolt and I've been enjoying your content! (subbed immediately hehe) Among the two, I'd like to hear your thoughts about which would feel most comfortable for long rides, which would give a more enjoyable ride (I'm a loser for sound and feeling), and which of these do you think is much more worth it? The ergonomics description you do in the video is very helpful. You should consider doing Sportsbikes like MT 09 or the Supersports bike such as Kawi zx636
That's one great video of Bolt. Thanks for sitting on it and telling your height. It doesn't really look that small while you're on. I'm 5'8 and seriously considering to get one. 5'8 would fit better? Or should I consider Vulcan S?
The Vulcan S is the best sport cruiser ever made. It's fast, very reliable, comfortable, has a good sound, dual analog/digital gauges, ergofit system, and costs the same or less than a Bolt. I can't wait to buy a Vulcan S. It's one of my top dream bikes.
I see that he didn't respond to your question, but If you look about 11 comments down from yours, a guy (Harry J) asked Chooch the same question. Chooch said if you're tall, then he would recommend the Vulcan S.
Between the Vulcan S and the Bolt which would you chose for a taller rider . I’m 6’3 250 . I definitely like the exhausted and the Vtwin sounds of the bolt better
Honestly, I'm 3 inches shorter than you and I would still take the Vulcan over the Bolt. If you're getting a new Vulcan S they have the ergo fit system which lets you select the handlebars, seat, and peg location for your riding preference. That and it just feels like a nicer ride overall makes me say Vulcan over Bolt every time.
How did you feel about the air filter and its location?? Did it mess with your riding exp at all? All lot of people say its an odd location and feels weird. Thanks!
I notice you using sony action cams, are they better at cancelling the wind noise out ? Cause my GoPro 8 Black with its wind microphone mode is garbage lol
Try adding a deadcat to the mic. That helped me a lot with wind noise. The reason I use the sony is because of the side mount slim profile that allows for the front of my helmet to stay more aerodynamic and it doesn't block any vents. Plus, the B.O.S.S. system (optical OIS) is amazing!
I am thinking of switching to Sony,I am over GoPro over priced cameras and yet they do not do what their suppost to. What is the awesome soundtrack at the start when your showcasing the Yamaha Bolt ?
The Indian Scout 20 with the bobber seat and mini apes is a far better bike and better bargain. It's a customized bobber style bike that is VERY comfortable and feels so badass. I've been on one, and I've been on a Bolt. I would get the Indian over the Bolt any day. There is a large cost difference though...about $5k. But the Indian is a larger displacement engine as well, and there are SO many customization options from Indian that can be added to their bikes, such as floorboards, bags, backrest, etc. If you have the extra funds, go for the Indian, and it also has forward controls, vs the Bolt has very cramped up mids. God bless you and safe riding. ✝👍🏻
I wanted to get this bike after I got my Motorcycle license but the lady at the dealership told me that they couldn't sell it to me because I was a beginner and that I needed at least 2 years of riding before I can purchase a Yamaha. She also told me to go to Harley Davidson. They'll sell a bike to anyone. That's ridiculous, how else are you suppose to learn how to ride? I took the lady's advice and I purchased a Harley, it's there lost.
I purchased a brand new Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom back in 2009 with 0 riding experience. Had it delivered to my home. I see nothing online that says you can't buy it, unless it was just that one dealers policy.
It was that dealership. Fast forward 6 months later, I went to other dealerships such as Honda, Triumph, BMW and even the Yamaha dealership where they shot that Rapper singer in Pompano Beach, FL 2 or 3 months ago. Anyhow, they all told me that it was a ridiculous policy and the manager of the store even said "Maybe they just didn't want to sell it to you". Because no one in their right mind will send you to the competitor. So yeah, It was my bad luck. In Hindsight, they were right. Apparently it is due to a combination of the front tree bearings being ball bearing, so switching to roller bearings fixes it, that and the factory zig zag tires
Don’t ever say entry level. Definitely not. And really I’d love to have a road king but no way in hell I could ever be able to purchase that masterpiece 😅😐 Still great review!
I don't normally add comments, but easy with the wrist action bro, you'll still have that acceleration and low end torque with out breaking your wrist and on a hot day man don't wear all the protective gear, youll have a heat stroke before you get hit by anybody
Everyone has their own opinion, so wear what you want for your own reasons. Just sayin... That muffler is the first thing I'd remove and throw away. It sounds like my lawn mower (actually my lawnmower is a bit louder and sounds better) so I can hear it rumble a bit.
Helmet Cam is a Sony FDR-X3000 4k. Bars was a Sony HDR-AS300 but that one finally broke for good. Replaced with an Akaso V50 Pro for my next production.
I LOVE my 2014 Bolt. By no stretch of the imagination would the Honda Rebel 500 or ANY Rebel come close to the performance of the Bolt. I had one and there is no way that Honda could keep up with my Bolt. Sorry but I think you are delusional. The heat must really be getting to you. LOL.
Chooch man, those clothes are too cool for that machine :) hehehe... get some cool cafe racer clothes next time :) jokes! Good review! Would a newish/used SV650 or XSR700 be a more fun purchase than this bike though?
I think it can be but I also recommend riding the other two I recommend for first bikes. The Honda Rebel 500 or my personal favorite the Kawasaki Vulcan S. Every one of those machines can make a good start but it's up to how they feel to you. I'd say sit and ride them all as a demo to get a feel for what makes the best fit for you.
@Derek Frampton PaPa-D yeah people kept calling it a beginner bike and in the spec sheet it's obviously more than 900cc so I was pretty confused. But I wanted something with similar styling thats also beginner and short people friendly. I will go check out the rebel, thanks!
Derek Frampton PaPa-D I’m looking into my first bike as well, turn 16 in a few days. I was eyeballing bikes such as the Rebel500, Yamaha bolt, FZ-07, and a HD883. I weigh around 230-240 atm and currently am 5’10.5. I have the option to buy a bolt off of a family member in good condition with low miles for a decent price similar to a rebel. Would you say just keeping the revs low I could probably handle the bike?
KidsOnALeash OnABoat if you’re careful with the throttle and are very smooth with the clutch and understand the friction zone, you will probably be ok, it is better to start smaller though
Jordan Cailes well I’ve learned a lot the last few days haha. I think I’ll get a used Indian or possibly a Harley, not a fan of the company however. I have decent experience on 4wheelers and dirt bikes (of course different beast) but that partially qualifies me as not 100% a beginner? Like I said at the end of the day I don’t plan on being stupid or speeding.
KidsOnALeash OnABoat honestly a lot of mistakes happen due to the throttle response and lack of clutch control, if you can focus on that you’ll be fine
To paraphrase Top Gear: The Bolt is the kind of bike I'd set out to buy ... then, just before I'd have to make a left to enter the Yamaha dealer's parking-lot, I'd turn right instead and head to the nearest H-D dealer to buy an Iron 1200 or a 48. I know it's the better motorcycle and it's more modern and way cheaper to buy and own ... but I just don't know if I could live with that weird styling and with the fact that I'd be riding around on a "copy". I had that once in my life and while the bike in question was great (and even looked better than the H-Ds of the period) there was still that stupid feeling of "you only have a knock-off, not the original". Silly thoughts to have, I know ... and at my age I really should be over this sort of brand BS ... :)
Everybody likes to compare that to a Sportster, Sports has been around since 1957. What that bike looks like, is like all metric bikes they just missed the mark. It also looks cheap it just doesn't look very solid and anything I'd want to own. I know it's all that and a bag of chips. According to everyone trying push them. Anyone who's reading a Sportster and I've had four or five of them my first one in 1969 Kickstart Magneto only, would run you over on that Bolt. It looks like a very much a beginner bike, the difference between a Zippo and a cricket lighter. When you fill up and be used the other one you throw away. Stop embarrassing yourself with these comparisons. I don't ride a Harley although I did for 30 years. I'm back on the Honda

Vulcan S has the Ergo Fit system so for a taller rider it might be better. I'm working on getting with a Kawasaki dealer soon :)
Does the bolt still have the headshake/death wabble at high speeds
Nope I have a 2018 r-spec and super smooth
Apparently it is due to a combination of the front tree bearings being ball bearing, so switching to roller bearings fixes it, that and the factory zig zag tires
The suspension is rea-GASP-l cooling all i see is a -GASP-two cylinder engine
I wish they would have made it a 74ci.
Being it's an air cooled bike, does it stay cool In the heat?
yeah
Going down the road yea but multiple red lights and your balls start cooking
hi mate i dont like to much vibration
what do you think about vibration
thanks
Apparently it's a lot better in the vibration department than the Iron 883.
Hey Chooch, which is the better bike for someone 6'2 and over 230lbs, Kawasaki Vulcan S or the Yamaha Bolt R-Spec?
isaac88ig a bigger Harley Davidson Softail or a dresser would be a better suit in my opinion
. . . or Moto Guzzi V9 ?
That stock exhaust is really bulky looking ...
Don’t ever say entry level. Definitely not. And really I’d love to have a road king but no way in hell I could ever be able to purchase that masterpiece 😅😐
Still great review!
Entry level...100 ccs.
is this ok for beginners?
It can be if you have throttle discipline.
Do an MT-07! You’ll love it!
Dude said 32 inseam yeah right
The really flexible one's lol
This is the bike I want for my first bike
Great video. I still want the Rocket.
Me too lol.
I felt the bolt was less fun to ride compared to my Vulcan S 650
Is that your Einstein noise detecter??? Likes like Doc from Back to the Future
LOL, dead cat on zoom H1. It does though doesnt it?
Throttle wrist action a bit over the top, relax on the back twist, not need to be so release so violently .🤣
Hi, what camera are you using to shoot your video?
Which part?
@@MotoChooch
The camera on your helmet & handlebars. You get really good footage.
LOL.
Yeah he was making the wrong comparison. The most direct competitors is the HD Sportster Iron 883. Otherwise great video.
Chooch man, those clothes are too cool for that machine :) hehehe... get some cool cafe racer clothes next time :) jokes!
Good review!
Would a newish/used SV650 or XSR700 be a more fun purchase than this bike though?
Having ridden the SV650 I absolutely would take that over a Bolt.
Would you recommend this for a first bike?
I think it can be but I also recommend riding the other two I recommend for first bikes. The Honda Rebel 500 or my personal favorite the Kawasaki Vulcan S. Every one of those machines can make a good start but it's up to how they feel to you. I'd say sit and ride them all as a demo to get a feel for what makes the best fit for you.
My V-Star had much better balance than my HD.
More chrome...and chrome straight pipes....it does not sound like a HD.
Would this be a decent first bike or is it too powerful?
Yamahaly.
th-cam.com/video/60sEKTq8E64/w-d-xo.html This is a proper test. Check it out.
do people think you're crazy for making gestures in front of a bike?
Yes
😂🤣😂
if the hp was impressive, they would list it
To paraphrase Top Gear:
The Bolt is the kind of bike I'd set out to buy ... then, just before I'd have to make a left to enter the Yamaha dealer's parking-lot, I'd turn right instead and head to the nearest H-D dealer to buy an Iron 1200 or a 48.
I test drove one of those. I thought it was the slowest bike that I have ever ridden. Cool looking and extremely shitty in the performance department.
Guess you never rode a HD 883 Iron, which this is the bike it goes against, because it's almost a second slower than this bike from 0-60mph.
No never rode the 883 but if its slower than the bolt, then Harley should stop making the 883 tomorrow. Must be horrible riding one of those
+Bunnyshooter 223 It's 5.6 seconds.
Entry level machine haha love when people say that. So so wrong
