    Totally 100% agree. Im a police car mechanic. Nothing we have had before or even after the Crown Victoria comes even remotely close to the reliability of the 4.6 2v, and we have tried all of the domestic brands.

      The only Ecoboost vehicles we have are unmarked units. Not that many. Most of the units we have for squad cars nowadays are explorers with the 3.7, and just got some of the new ones with the 3.3.

      I worked on a fleet of them. The 4.6 2V is darn near indestructible. Most issues were suspension. Had to replace a locked up engine, but that was due to very poor maintenance and not the engines fault. I drive a 2010 P7B everyday and have no problems except the rack leaks and the exhaust manifolds have rotted.

      2uzfe Toyota 4.7l dohc v8 destroys the 4.6 l 2v in terms of reliability and everything else. Not to mention Toyota transmissions are insanely better too.

    I daily drove a 2007 Crown Vic police interceptor and have worked on other Modular V8s from time to time. Seen those motors go through hell and back. I 100% agree, 2V 4.6 and 4R70/75 is about as bulletproof as you can get.

      Have that same combo on 98 Crown Vic. Very reliable except for a few issues like a light lower end knock in drive at a stoplight, oil consumption per 1,000 miles or more, pings while flooring it on the highway, no blue smoke on start up, but as of recent, I noticed it smokes lightly at idle. 170,000 original miles. Should I consider rebuilding the engine?

    I miss my 2001 f150 4.6l V8 truck. It was my first ever vehicle when I was 17 and was a hand-me-down. Was over 230k miles and the only thing going wrong on it was a power steering leak and my fuel pump started to go. I would still have that truck today. But in 2021 when I was 23 I was rear ended by a distracted driver when I was stopped, and they hit me at 50mph. I miss that truck so much, sent me down memory lane when you started it up.

    I whole heartily agree ! I had a 2002 F150 XLT 2wd silver with 5.4 and 4r70 Trans. I bought it with 60k miles, and sold it with 305,000 miles, original engine, Trans, diff, A/C system. Only repair to engine was a new plastic intake manifold at 285,000 miles, old one warped and had a vacuum leak. I now have a 2004 Mustang GT with 4.6 2V with 150,000 miles. No oil leaks, no burning oil and/or blow by. Yes, the 4.6 and 5.4 2V Modular engines are some of the most reliable long lasting engines out there!

    You are absolutely correct. 25 year mobile tech, these engines were bomb proof. Easily hit the 300k mark with good maintenance. Everything went to shit once the 3v came out. If you can find a nice rig with a 2v, its a unicorn. I have never had to do a water pump on these..ever. Now, the 5.0 Ive done as early as 45k, and another at 90k.

    I totally agree. I’m the original owner of a 2001 Expedition XLT 4.6 2wd, 244,000 miles down here in GA. I specifically wanted the 4.6 engine for reliability. The car runs, shifts and looks like the day I purchased it in 2000 and just passed it’s yearly emissions check today with the original exhaust. Just routine maintenance items, front suspension rebuild, rear axle seals, that’s it. I flush the cooling system every 30k, flush the tranny every 70k and change the oil every 5k. We just inherited a 2013 Honda Odyssey and my wife wants me to finally sell the Expo. These vehicles were built to a tougher standard than the junk built today and I’m sort of thinking the Expo might out last the Odyssey.

    My father bought one new (2002 F-150 XL SCAB 4.6 black). He drove it until he passed in 2016 when I got it for my daughter who's been driving it daily for the last 5 years. That truck spent the first 14 years in central PA (rust belt) so it does have rust issues on the rocker panels but it's pretty solid otherwise. I've replaced tie rod ends, upper control arms, one exhaust manifold, both front wheel bearings, and one rotted brake line (hard line to the rear). Other than that, it runs reliably like a top. I won't get rid of it until the wheels literally fall off.

    After owning three vehicles with this powertrain combo I can confirm they are reliable. I cannot however say they are powerful or very efficient. The 4r70w isn't my favourite transmission though, I'd much rather have the 5 speed hooked up to the 4.6.

    • @FordBossMe
      @FordBossMe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are efficient it's not a matter of debating that they wouldn't have been as successful as they were if that wasn't the case
      Most powerful absolutely not no way nowhere in any of my statement would I ever say that or have said that

    • @gailgrove
      @gailgrove 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FordBossMe I'll have to ask, efficient compared to what? They were much more efficient than the small blocks they replaced 30 years ago for sure. However, compared to modern engines they are not at all. My new Ram with the 5.7 and 8 speed is more fuel efficient than the 4.6 4 speed combo it replaced while weighing 1500 lbs more and having an additional 150hp and 100 ft lbs over the 4.6 it replaced.

    I just picked up a 2000 Ford F-150 4x4 pickup 4.6 liter engine. While doing a little research about these 4.6 liter engines I found that in starting in 2001 they made an upgrade to the cylinder heads and intake on some of these engines! There is a non PI that produced 190 horsepower, but the PI version jumped the horsepower rating up to 260 HP! You can check your VIN number plate for the eighth digit number # , if it has a W it has the standard 190HP engine. But if the eighth digit # is a number 9 it has a PI engine! And from what I have read, these are the same engine that they used in the mustang with the only difference being the intake cam that was used for the mustang produced another 35 horsepower then the truck engine produced. 😋

    I have a 2000 F150 4.6L long bed super-cab fleet truck, completely bare bones except for automatic transmission and air conditioning. The only “problem” I had was caused by me, I power washed the engine and fried two of the coils so I figured I’d do a “tune-up” and I replaced all the coils and spark plugs with factory Motorcraft parts and she has ran amazingly since (:::knocks on wood:::). I have about 150,000 on her and I just change all the fluids when I’m supposed to and she starts up every time I turn the key and sounds great. 😎
    I deserve her, the car I had before was a 1997 S10 Chevrolet Blazer (back in 2001) that was a complete pile of shit. Thank God I had an extended warranty on that Blazer ‘cause EVERY part on it was replaced… twice. I’ll never buy GM again because of that Blazer.

Goes away when i accelerate and in park at idle. 170,000 miles on it, original engine with the prod date sticker on the valve cover, burns a quart of oil every 1,000 or so miles and passes CA smog everytime. Figured I chime in I own a 2011 Ford Expedition XLT premium with 250k original miles. Only issues are the passenger door panels are rotting, liftgate paint is bubbling and the passenger side exhaust manifold is on its 3rd manifold. I use full synthetic and still change it every time 6k miles. Runs and drives like new. If you maintain these trucks they will last a long time especially if you keep it in nice climate. I unfortunately live in New England.

    I have a 03 4.6 f150 4x4 and it has been reliable for the 4 or 5 years I've owned it. The only things I've done to it is a brake line, rear brake caliper, wheel bearing, alternator and pads and rotors. All typical maintenance you would do on any vehicle and everything was done by me and I'm not a mechanic by any means. So I agree these trucks are relatively easy to work on, some of the things mentioned I literally had never done before by myself. The only sad thing is because of where I live the salt corrosion has rotted away the frame in the rear and bed so it's not really worth continuing to work on keeping up with all the maintenance. I just do the bare minimum to keep it on the road until it's no longer road worthy.

    The key to them is routine maintenance and keep the rocker's sprayed with lubricant or fluid film. Had a 2000 5.4 2v sold it with 318 thou miles and the only rot was in the door rocker's still ran like a top. Bought and 03 fx4 5.4 2v with 130 thou and the only rot is in the door rocker's. Runs like a new truck.
