  • Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am recreating an AVLB or an Armoured Vehicle-Launched Bridge. It is essentially a tank that carries its own deployable bridge that can be used to cross trenches or other gaps in the battlefield.

    The more complicated bridge layer is designed so that it is more stealthy. With the normal one, you are having a large bridge lifting into the air, sometimes giving away their position. this one slide the bridge so that it is more inconspicuous.

    0:53 Something to note is that trenches aren’t really an obstacle for tanks. Most tanks are fast enough that they’ll skip over any kind of ditch, hole or trench they come across. And if for some reason they’re going slow enough to get caught up in one or in the unlikely event they come across a hole big enough that they can’t hop over, most tanks will have the power to brute force their way out

      I think the tank isn't the main thing this was made to cross. It supposed to be laid down then allow the rest of the convoy which might not be tanks to cross.

      The tank may cross the ditch with ease, but your men will probably have more trouble.

    just FYI: the german slide method (which the dutch video shows) makes the bridge elements much simpler/cheaper and modular, if needed to be left behind for following units/days/retreat while the vehicle grabs another bridge for the next obstacle. Pioneer units of those armies have the same bridges which can be split ones more sideways for easy transport on trucks to be layed out by crane or to be carried for supplying the bridgelaying tanks with more bridge. No hinches and hydrolics in the bridge itself, which would need to be maintained (kept clean/lubcricated) and would be costly if left to secure a route etc..

      That's actually a really good point I didn't know about. I'm wondering of the tank can angle the bridge though, or if you have a 10ft elevation on the other side of the gap if it just can't bridge that?

      ​ @Zedstein yes, it can angle it further upwards. The arm on which it slides is able to add a few degrees to what is seen in the clip and the whole tank can add a few more deegree upwards by standing higher on the frontal dozer blade. In that clip they dont max out the arm and blade.
      Worst case it has to use the dozer blade to create a little ramp for itself before laying the bridge.
      BUT in service all those bridges should never be laid in a noteworthy upwards or downwards angle, as friction is all what keeps them in place and a heavy vehicle moving on it could fairly easily move the bridge itself. Even when level its not advised to brake or accelerate on such a bridge because of that possibility.

    I used to be a M60 AVLB driver, for a number of years, but when I got stationed in Fort Hood, TX, we had the M104 Wolverine HAB (Heavy Assault Bridge). The Wolverine uses the German designed bridging system, a leguan deployment system, all built on the M1A2 Abrams chassis. It isn't actually anymore complicated on the bridge side, in fact it's simpler, while the leguan deployment sytem is a beefy unit and does add complication to the vehicle side of things, but you wouldn't think it watching a skilled opporator deploy the bridge. All told it takes about 8 mins to deploy and 10 mins to recover the bridge. While some say the reason the military switched to the leguan bridging system was to make it less conspicous, it's actually because the M60 AVLB bridges were designed for lighter M48s and M60 tanks, not for M1s, thus when an Abrams had to cross a AVLB bridge it could only creap across, with the leguan bridge that same battle tank can get across at 10 Mph. Though that doesn't sound like much, when you are breaching a lane, any less time spent in a chokepoint is less time to get shot.
    All told, the leguan system is a much cleaner, faster, and better built system over the old AVLB system.
    If you're looking for a couple of other interesting Engineer vehicles, take a look at the M9 ACE (Not a lot of complicated engineering, and it leaks like a siv in real life), Unimog SEE truck (only us military vehicle build by Mercedes Benz. Not so much complicated, but interesting to see, no pun intended), and the PLS HEMTT (Probably pretty easy to replicate).

    It’s actually hard to comprehend how tall these things are, a centurion Australian army bridge later (only 2 of which they made, only 1 still works) is about 9m high fully extended upwards.

      A less laggy challenge would be making reduction gears with a single pair of gears with a very high reduction ratio out of survival parts only. I think a 10x10x2 (excluding the supports they're attached to) might allow for a reduction ratio of 20 or more, but the largest reduction ratio I was able to achieve was 2:1, by using the "Gear Examples" blueprint Eru has uploaded to the workshop. I was able to get higher ratios in a 10x10x3, using something similar to how old trains synchronize wheels and how pistons work, but modified for achieving a reduction ratio between a big circle and a small circle.

    Bridges also carry APV's, Artillery, Supply trucks, etc. So the bridge is for other less capable vehicles. Impressive as always..

    This reminded me of the german amphibie m3, which is a heavy amphibious vehicle.
    Other than deploying a bridge the vehicle itself is a bridge and it can connect to others to make the bridge longer, effectively creating a quickly deployed bridge which can cross multiple hundreds of meters but it's only meant to cross water.

    Basically every form of the AVLB calls for combat engineers to level the terrain on both sides of the gap, but it's a much faster process to have that done and then have a tank lay a bridge out than it is to build a whole bridge if you've only a narrow but deep gap to cross. But this is certainly a very impressive example!

    It would actually be interesting to see you have a multiplayer race in which everyone needs to make such a vehicle with a detachable folding bridge.
    It would also be interesting to see yu make a clock powered entirely by a weight, with someone manually needing to move the weight back up. Whether you use the Geneva Drive or an Encampment (though you might want to try both, to see the differences), is irrelevant. The biggest problem I see you having is the reduction gears which would make this possible. In fact, I hope you will issue a challenge to everyone to make the most compact reduction gears with the highest reduction ratio using only blocks available in survival.
    For reference, a 3x3 gear made by two layers rotated by 45 degrees, one with small pipes and one with large pipes (all of the pipes only use up 1 cube of space), can connect to a 5x5 gear made in the same way but with only small pipes, for a reduction ratio of 2:4 or 1:2 (since we 3x3 has a diameter of 3 and we remove half a block from each side because of the contact surface, we get the 2 for the diameter of rotation, and for a 5x5 we remove half from each side and get a diameter of rotation of 4, and we have the same number of gear teeth, which means the ratio of rotatio is 2:4, and if we half each number we get the ratio being 1:2). On the workshop, Eru has a blueprint called "Gear Examples", which also shows the setup in use, but that can only be used to double the speed, and it would be nice to have a single pair of reduction gears to get a much larger reduction ratio (which would also help out with the lag). I think that a reduction ratio of 20 in a 10x10x2 might be achievable with a single gear.

      They've made this exact challenge in the past, but the bridge didn't fold, it wasn't a race (timed instead) and picking up the bridge was much easier (used pipe pieces to pick it up so it locked in place).

Adding a folding mechanism and all kinds of difficult terrain would make this more interesting. Like one side being 45 degrees twisted when looking rom the other side, as well as different lengths of gaps, different angles for the sides (instead of parallel sides, like with the rocks which were tried in this video), and maybe even with some moving obstacles (like have one side slide, then another side move up-and-down, and another side move in a circle, and another side have coveyor-belt-like pipes pushing the bridge away, and maybe even a bridge which requires them to stop on an island and put the bridge on a different side of the island to continue).

    4:19 there you can see that you have no idea about german engineering.
    The bridge layer from the US-Army (what you build in the video) because of its height its is it impractical e.g. in the forest. While the Leopard is flat on the ground with its bridge, the M60 (what you built) is already visible with its 10 meters high. So it's not impractical it's smart because of the cover.

      Frankly both of them are fairly impractical. If the goal is a well fortified transport for quick bridges, both of them would be incredibly expensive only to allow the laying down of a single bridge, with a high risk of failure if they are brought through combat.
      They are over complicating it, make a tank that can carry bridge pieces that are based on being light and durable (easier to do if its not designed around being able to build itself, with fewer points of failure since simplicity allows more redundancy), and protect said pieces. Then make a second smaller tank that functions like a forklift to move pieces into place. That means you can create a path through combat zones with fewer points of failure, and capable of creating more bridges with fewer vehicles.

    That sensor & piston trick is nice, I use it to activate different modules I weld to my tractor, not needing to rewire them.

    Fun fact, the maus (ww 2 german super heavy tank) crossed rivers by sealing itself and getting another maus to give it power with a cable while it drove under the river, and then repeated the process with the second one. Also, please build a calliope (Sherman with a bunch of rockets)

    I'd love to see these improvements, but it would be a LOT of work for you. First improvement is to double bearing everything. Allow the stabilizer foot to extend past 90* as well as the deployment arm. Use Kan's variable piston system to allow hyper extension. For the bridge controls, have one of the pistons extend to cause the bridge to unfold, and the other to fold it in. You will run out of buttons, so I would recommend using mode switching logic so that with the flip of a switch you can go from controlling the tank to controlling the bridge with the same buttons.

    9:17 If you want right triangles in scrap mechanic, stick with 3, 4, 5 triangles. When the two sides are 3 and 4 blocks, the hypotenuse is exactly 5 blocks. You could do 6, 8, 10 too.

    Just a little fact: the bridge is for tanks but also for supplies (A tank and it’s crew can’t run for that long without it), and the trucks can’t pass most things that the tanks can

    I imagine it works better IRL because the weight of a heavy metal bridge with a tank on top of it probably moves dirt and rock out of the way.

    I used to work with the ABLV, they're absolute nightmares. Extremely slow and unreliable. we not only bridged gaps with them but also used them to breach obstacles.

    To help get the pins in you could use sloped blocks around the hole to help guide it in, and preferably lowest friction possible

    i was at an old army museum once and they did like a show for each vehicle there and one of them was like a similar bridge tank thing
    it was really scary to look at as it lowered and deployed the bridge the sounds it made were amazing and concerning at the same time

    They got another pins on the side, that probably sits in holder in bridge to secure it during lifting/laying down(seems also offers leverage points). How they adjust height is unclear, but they got two hydraulics that give them some options. One can control angle foot is to the ground while second is controling angle of pins. Not much tho, but they are engineers, they got shovels..

      @@brrrrrr a hiking system, it is how small boats stabilize. the crew just leans out the side of the boat to pull the center of mass to one side to stabilize the boat.

    Making the ends of the prongs pointed(using that one conduit connector or something) would probably help you pick the bridge back up, also removing the high friction parts in the bridge socket now that you identified the problem may help driving back away and leaving the bridge

    Look up the M3 Amphibious Rig. The vehicle becomes a boat and connects to other ones to make a bridge than tanks and other vehicles can drive over. It’s a cool idea, and an offshoot of this idea.

    24:25 you could have pulled the bridge to some flat ground from the leverage bar.

    You could do the historical tank build challenge where you pick a tank that has already been built that look like they shouldn't work (and do no research into as they did work. Makes it interesting) then put each other through challenges like a fire fight, race, obsticals, or even bridge building

    a clamp system might have worked easier where the expanding blocks not only clamped it but also trigger the sensors for the deployment and collapsing of the bridge. I watched the british army do a training exercise with one of these where they used it to be the base of creating a permanent bridge over a river in 1 weekend.

    I think those things you recreate are literally called something like "engineering tanks" because they specialize in very specific utility tasks.

    I don't think that's true, the preconnected only has pins, I believe this design has interconnecting rail that the back part slid in, giving more surface to connect

    I really think the retrieval would be more doable in scrap mechanic if we had cones to alleviate the issue of the uneven terrain. Maybe try it again with The Modpack Polygons by Durf.

    I think scrap needs connectors, so you could connect parts that aren't soldered together. that would help a lot

    wiring to the bridge shouldnt be an issue, it would be like connecting the hydraulic line. But if you add a few cacti to the bottom of the bridge, it should help stop it from sliding around, which could help with backing out of it.

    Bridge layers usually are used to get wheeled vehicles over obstacles. Not necessarily other tracked vehicles.

    Scrapman: Tanks aren't good for trenches and rivers.
    Me: 1st of all trenches is literally the reason why tanks were invented. And secondly a lot of tanks are specifically designed with the ability to attach snorkels so that they can cross rivers. with depth. XD

    Have not watched the whole thing so not sure what you came up with for remote controls issue but I like to use a static sensor on the "unattached" part of the creation.
    On the controlled part of the creation you can use a block and piston (or bearing to move into the sensors range.
