    Just did this on my parents’ ‘09 Tig. Save yourselves the expense of Vagcom and strain of trying to pry the filter out; instead (after breaking free the fill and drain plugs, in that order), remove the bolts that hold the filter in the unit and start the car, and watch the filter pop right out. Let the engine run the pump instead of Vagcom. I had my dad start it while I watched. Then simply remove the white plastic “head” and black filter with bent needle nose pliers, as seen. Please please please don’t aggravate yourselves with driving a screw into the unit or wrestling with pliers to remove!

    Thanks for the walk through. I just did this, using your instructions, on my 2012 Tiguan. The filter bolts were a pain to get back in and torqued down but it’s done. Better than paying $250 to the dealership to do and they would only change the fluid!!!

      In Australia 140 AUD(100 USD) to get this done at VW dealership, 1l fluid is around 50 bucks, $90 for labor. I thinks its rip off. How long job takes, 30 min max?

      Hi Richard, I was curios about what is the normal instruction from the VW dealers in other countries ... Down here in Brazil they say only the fluid needs to be changed.
      Based on you comments I see the instruction is pretty much the same anywherelse in the world.
      I will spend a lot of money, but I will change the filter also!!! Is really hard to find this part number here.

      hour although I did let mine drain for most of while I went and ran some errands. Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I rarely check to see if I had any comments. Cheers 🍻

      Leo Paes Leo I asked three dealerships around me about the Haldex service and they all said the same thing. The service is only for the fluid and that the filter is a lifetime item and doesn’t get replaced. I’ve never seen a lifetime filter that didn’t at least get washed occasionally.
      On another note. I local independent VW service shop and tuner said they do change the fluid and filter for and $200 US . Still cheaper to do it yourself though.
      Cheers 🍻

    Nice video thanks for making this for Gen4 Haldex / Tig owners. or to be owners. I have an intermittent problem with my Gen4 haldex. Sometimes it'll store a DTC code which will de-activate the use of rear wheel drive, and sometimes its fine on the first start up. To correct, sometimes it requires a 2nd start of the engine. I clear the code and it comes back occasionally. On OBDeleven it states: Haldex Clutch Control Valve - Mechanical Malfunction - DTC 02248. Not sure if its pump or ecu related, and would hate to start throwing money at the wrong parts to fix it. 185k kms, and haldex oil changed done at 160k kms with a suspicion its never had a haldex service done before that according to service history book. I hear corrosion can mess the ECU's up, but the weather where I am doesn't snow, so I don't think this could be it. Would love to hear if anyone else had the same experience.

    Thanks for posting this vid! Well worth changing the filter when you change the oil. Vw don't recognise that this is a changeable part of the haldex. VW Parts Dept looked ant me stupid when I asked for it !! Although I have VCDS - you don't need it to pop the filter out as in this vid. The pump runs constantly when the vehicle is running. Simply start the car for a few seconds and the pump will run and pressurise the filter and help to move it out. Don't leave the vehicle running though because it will quickly empty the oil out of the system. Gently rotation and pulling action with pliers will then allow the unit to be removed.Change filter if you can because mine was well glogged up at 60k miles even though I had changed the oil at 40K.

    Shouldn't you start the car and allow the haldex pump to fill the filter and prime the system after refilling with oil, and then refill until it over flows as the level will have dropped? Thanks

    Great walk thru. I'm doing mine later today. 60k service is due. Dealer apparently serviced it at 30k under the free services but I doubt they did the filter, or checked the pump screen. No dealer in my area had the filter in stock. Big surprise when you pay $150 for a service and all they do is drain and fill. The quickest way to pop that filter out is to just turn the key on and pressure should pop it out.
    Another good tip for you is while you are there drain and fill both the front and rear differentials. At 40k mine looked nasty. I used a good Bel-Rey synthetic differential fluid so I'll have a peak in 20k when the 80k is due.

    Great video. How did you finally get the filter back into the housing? I've heard that it is next to impossible. It would be a real bummer to get the old one out only to find that a new one cannot be fitted! Can you confirm that starting the car will activate the pump and push the filter out? Thanks.

    • @sbcncsu
      @sbcncsu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It only took a little force to get the filter to go into the housing. I used a pry bar to push on the cover while getting leverage from either the exhaust or a mounting bolt. The pump does run when you start the engine.

  • @bencapone848

    So the front differential, rear differential and the haldex are 3 separate units? Also, I’ve heard the front differential is built into the transmission. Does that mean that if you get a transmission service done that the differential gets serviced as well?
    Also, if the haldex and rear differential are different, does that mean they both need separate servicing done? Such as the haldex needs its own fluid change and the rear differential does as well?

    • @sbcncsu
      @sbcncsu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically, the front differential is built into the transmission and is lubricated by the transmission fluid. However, the bevel gear or power take-off that transfers power to the rear of the car is a separate gear box with gear oil that is bolted to the side of the transmission. It has to be serviced separately.
      In the rear, there is the Haldex which is the electronically controlled clutch and a differential which sends power to the wheels. There are two separate fluids in two separate reservoirs built together in one housing. Both would need to be serviced separately.

    Just came to say thanks. I replaced the filter with a "kit" as my 2010 Tiguan had developed a leak from the filter housing cap. This was due to corrosion creeping in and upto the ring seals, I cleaned as best I could and fitted new filter then sealed the new cap in place and it's good as gold. The old filter was tough to get out because of the alloy corrosion, the new one slipped in fairly easy with a little grease on the o rings. Thanks a bunch for the video, my mechanic said it wasn't a serviceable part 🤔.
    It took me 2 hours from entering the workshop do tidied up. Working off axle stands.
    My oil was slightly green in colour but I think it has been changed at some point. Car has done 120k.

    Thanks for the video. My 2013 Tiguan 4Motion recently went in for a haldex service and a few other jobs and it's since been locking the rear diff when pulling away from standing, but only when the steering whele is turned. It's a similar feeling to thinking the electronic parking brake is sstill applied. There's no power and you can feel the resistance in the drive train. I've looked at my rear wheels and they are locked when this happens.
    When pulling away in a straight line it's fine. Any ideas what may be causing it to lock? Do you think the haldex service I paid for was just a fluid change and they didn't change the filter? Many thanks.

    • @sbcncsu
      @sbcncsu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sounds bad. You need to read codes with VCDS to see if there are codes in the ABS or 4Motion modules. Also, check the fluid levels in both the Haldex coupling AND the rear differential. The tech may have drained the fluid from the differential accidentally. Here is my video on the rear differential service: th-cam.com/video/f8rlU_zuT0c/w-d-xo.html

    @sbcncsu did you have any issues with the haldex, like any fault codes in awd system or it was just your thought that the filter and oil in haldex needs to be changed to ensure a longer life of the system? I am asking because few days ago a fault in awd module came on saying: “00448 haldex clutch pump (v181) 002 - lower limit exceeded” i have deleted it, but after another 10-15 miles i decided to check it again with vcds and the same fault was there again. I wonder if it is because of lack of the fluid in the system or is it because the filter might be already cloged? Any thoughts? I have ~39k miles on the dash.

    I think they think that the filter is a screen because in some transmissions all the would be is a screen. My 09G has a screen. Later years though had a real paper filter and maybe even redesigned valve body. I think that was 2015 and up for the 09G. I wonder if they did that to try to fix problems that previous 09Gs have suffered from. I for one do not believe that a simple screen can keep the fluid clean enough for the tight tolerances of a valve body. Coincidentally the valve body is what wears out on the 09G and causes shifting problems. I would think that some very fine particles are making it through the screen and causing the valve body bores to wear very prematurely and cause problems like gear hunting and slipping. It is a shame that they designed such an awful transmission. If the thing would just shift right they would be some of the best cars. It seems to me they just had to ruin things one way or another.

      An error means the controller has sensed an issue with the pump itself OR the wiring to the pump. If the pump is clogged and not performing well, it could be the filter. Definitely want to try that first since the pumps are so expensive.

      Sorry that I don't read German. From the translation, it seems you are having an error in the Haldex? It can only be 2 items, the pump or the controller. Check the controller for output to the pump. If you turn on the pump in VCDS, you should hear it run and feel it running when you touch it. If it is not running, check for 12 volts coming from the controller.

    QUESTION! Once the new filter was put in, did you prime it with haldex oil? or did you just put it in dry and have the system automatically fill it up with oil?

      @@sbcncsu hi here is an update, it turns out my 2015 has a Gen 5, it gets an intermittent 16670 code, after doing research its quite possible the screen on the pump is clogged up. • @Rico0chet
    @Rico0chet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey. I'm really confused. Where is this haldex located. I'm having both dealerships and vw specialty mechanics say this isnt on north american tiguans. Is this located next to the rear differential? Or is this on the transmission? Would really like some assistance

    • @sbcncsu
      @sbcncsu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The haldex unit is built into the rear differential. The driveshaft connects to the input of the haldex clutch, which connects to the differential, all in the same housing. This type of haldex was used from ~2009-2017. The MQB Tiguan uses the new Borg Warner version of Haldex, Gen V.
