I was called in to do spring start up on a 15 ton Carrier split. Owner said it always needed "a shot of gas" every spring so I did the obligatory leak check. I found a suction line coupling on the backside of the air handler that had NEVER been brazed. Customer said the unit has been in for ten plus years. I fixed the leak, evacuated and charged the unit and left it running perfectly. But that's not all. The building owner refused to pay the bill. He claimed he'd had the unit fixed by another contractor every spring and each of those visits cost him a quarter of what we were charging him. He claimed we were ripping him off. Sometimes it doesn't pay to do a good job.

About 15 year ago, I was at a commercial split system on a rooftop of a veterinarian location. Within 10 minutes of troubleshooting I discovered the new condensing unit didn't have the service valves open. I immediately went down and asked a few questions. Was told that the installer had an accident during his installation and had to be hauled off to the ER. I prayed for him and asked if they called the company to have the system completed by that company. They couldn't get a hold of them so my company came out to finish. Turns out the original company got sued and had to shutdown their business. I got them up and running and a new client was under contract with the property management. My boss was thrilled as this was the beginning of a long and lucrative contract to do a lot more properties with them. Sometimes it just works out for the better. Huge mistake putting the filter in the stand. It's open on 2 sides. Installers did that to mine. One of my coils was completely covered with kaka. I didn't know any better at the time until I went to install UV lights and saw what was going on. It looked like it was covered in black mold. I used 2 kinds of coil cleaner and properly put the filter in the air handler. Been about 1.5 years the coil is spotless and those UV lights work great BTW.
i work an apartment complex that has a crapload of 25yr old r22' systems and all of them were missing the drain plug in the secondary drain line tap of the drain pan. After a few decades, they started dripping out on the waterheaters, and apartments below. One air handler caught fire, from the water dripping from above!
I was abandoned by my contractor just before Christmas 2012. Made the mistake of paying an extra 10% of the contract value just before Christmas and then the workers didn't return after Christmas break and the contractor wouldn't return calls. No sign this was going to happen. After a few months of futility, I finally called an outside HVAC guy for the roof unit. Turned out the heater manifold hadn't been installed for the gas heater, and the electronics on the A/C had a "fried" component. The guy ordered the heater manifold and troubleshot the A/C to locate the bad part -- it was an IC with a power tab which had been torn off. The heater manifold was an overnight ship but the IC was on backorder 6 weeks. Given I had a full electronics bench, I asked him to pull the IC and we would see if I could fix it. It was no trouble to pull the part, resolder the torn off tab, and reinstall. The A/C and header both fired up and worked perfectly. The HVAC guy gave me a deep discount because if I hadn't replated and resoldered the IC and got the old one working, he would have had yet a third trip out to my place. His largess was totally unexpected; he was able to cancel the IC reorder with no penalty and passed that plus the costs of a second revisit back to me. 10 years onward, the unit still works flawlessly (fingers crossed).

Every last apartment you could grow mustard's on the evaporators and on the condensers. After 4 units they got mad at me and told they were going to get their regular company. I should have pulled every evaporator, but no to save them money , I took time and clean them while they was inside the apartments with with no rinse. So they decided to get the other company. Every last filter, condenser and evaporator was completely plugged. I ask the tenant's when was the last time the filter was was cleaned or changed. Tenants said they have never been changed. Some said they have been there since the apartment's opened. ( 3 years ). These were no your basic apartments. The other company have to drive 1 1/2 hr to get there. Their maintenance man comes to work in starched white shorts. The air handlers are tilted away from the drain.
Electrician story for ya. Call for an outdoor HVAC unit with no power on the disconnect. Checked voltage, it's zero. None of the breakers in the panel are off, and they all read correct voltage. Something must be broken in the middle, right? Followed the wire all over the attic. No damage or junctions on the wire, but it does drop down above the panel. Went back down to double check, and surprise - that wire is NOT in the panel. I got permission to cut open the sheet rock above the panel, and sure enough the wire is coiled up and hidden. The current homeowner is the previous homeowner's son, and she had the system installed multiple years ago. The only thing I could think of, is that they quoted and sold the job, then _almost_ completed the work, without realizing there was no free breaker spaces in the panel. Or they knowingly scammed her, and she never complained.

Once I worked no cool at a 4 Plex condo. I had no power at the outdoor disconnect. The breaker in the condo was on but no power outside. I noticed that one of the condos was recently moved out of and the power was turned off. It's condenser was next to the one with no power. Turns out the 🚪 disconnects were swapped. For 30 years the residents had been using each others electricity and no one ever noticed.
"I left a nitrogen charge in it" oh boy. Judging by his previous "work" I wouldn't be surprised if that "installer" doesn't just open the service valves and contaminate the whole charge. I also wouldn't be surprised if that "installer" is an uncle bob handyman. Why get so far into an install without even hooking up the thermostat wiring or brazing the suction line? I get that things happen, but this seems fishy to me. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Hey Curtis, glad that they want the original installer to finish it. I would bet that they did not flush out the line set, which could lead to problems down the road. Thanks for posting.
Someone else's contract/warranty/bill. the installation company may even be doing it for free or being sued in cort for failing to deliver on their contract. Don't forget there's business in all of this.
10:13 haha. "Lovely", it's funny, because I literally say the exact same thing every time I come across a crap situation. While just look at it, "Lovely".
I work on alot of these bryant systems. Mostly communicating interfaces. There pretty simple easy to work on and efficient if installed right. More problems with the communicating ones where the only thermostat you can use is super expensive.

Anyway - sticker was 19.5k --- same truck today 33k. Bad time to need a truck. You probably look both ways 2-3x...but you never know. Great videos. Steve in NC
This happened to me but what happened was my unit failed right before a massive blizzard was about to trap us for a week and the HVAC tech came out and got my emergency electric heat working just an hour before the snow started to fall saving us from having to leave and stay with friends. We had to call them back out in the spring to get the A/C straight.
For sure we just don't know in times like these might of been went for the cheap tech or a rush job one thing for sure Curtis did it right a happy customer at this 😀
After a day like you had prior to this mess you handled things probably way better than I would have. The older I get it seems to take less to set me off lol
You looked like you were dragging Ass on that job, I have been that way before and knew it must have been hexed. Old Copper tubes just sitting in the weather are hard to solder from oxidation. I sure don't blame you for not working on that! Thanks for the Video 😃
Hey Curtis, long time viewer and subscriber, first time comment. I would highly recommend TruBlu vacuum hoses. Do a little research on them and see what you think. I’ve had mine for about 9 months and I absolutely love them. I work for an ac company so time saved vacuuming really only benefits my company, but for a self employed guy like yourself I really think they will help you out. Just for reference I pulled a vacuum down to 77 microns in fifteen minutes today in a five ton split system new install.
Great video as always. That sure was a mess. Great work though. I’m a 22 year HVAC tech and love your work. There is not sugar coating anything. Was wondering what smart watch your wearing?
Nobody needs to go behind an installer like that. He left you holding the bag & could care less. Sounds like the home-owner warranty company's HVAC guy that replaced one of my compressors when I was out of town. He only changed the compressor & didn't do anything about the refrigerant charge. That is one of the reasons I am going to a HVAC class now. I just got my EPA Universal certificate and now I can fix my own units.
What would you consider to be the life expectancy of an air conditioner in central Florida??? I bought my house 22 years ago and immediately had the air conditioning unit cleaned and serviced. I have had zero service done to my A\C unit. Should I call for service or leave it alone???
I tell you what that's the story of modern days. You have a product from 2019 that's already messed up leaking and then you have air conditioners out there that are 30 plus years old still pumping going just fine. And it's the same with all kinds of products they make it so shittily so that it will break sooner so you spend more money and it's freaking sad. Personally I still have a refrigerator from the 1980s that has never messed up still cold good freezer and I know someone that bought a refrigerator in 2020 that's already broke.
What was that outlet you hat on the contact her I need to get one of those I do startups and a lot of times the outlet next to the condenser isn't wired up
If thats a brand new outdoor unit thats not ever been connected, and an indoor unit from 2019. Whats the chances somebody condemed the outdoor unit because of a leak that was actually on the indoor unit?
Not sure I'd be all that interested in watching some line pulling gone bad. The swearing though? That I would have enjoyed! No doubt it was some m'f'ing beeatch of an install in that regard. I've watched you put your body in some God-awful spaces in attics, crawl spaces and the like with little if any whining. I'm not in the HVAC business, just a DIY'er who can appreciate the grit and professionalism I see in so many of your videos. I've learned a thing or two as well. Good deal!
The deal is homeowner wants it done for little to nothing and they hire someone that pulls crap like that. Around here some companies come and do an installation they collect the bug money and they won't come back when they have problems with equipment.
Oh boy! You ran into it on this one. I like how it ended up but I really want to know how the heck it ended up in the condition it was when you found it. Did the original installer not release the freon?
I almost wanna do a ride along with you one day just to experience the shit you do on a daily basis. Here in Florida doing this for the last 17 yrs I can’t say I’ve seen as many horrible things as I’ve seen in your videos.

If you have proof that you did the job, you may be able to put in a mechanics lien on the unit.

Hey Curtis, glad that they want the original installer to finish it. I would bet that they did not flush out the line set, which could lead to problems down the road. Thanks for posting.
I had a lineset loaded with moisture. R11 flush worked awesome at removing it
Great job Hoss their loss by not having you to do it properly. So enjoy watching you !
Someone else's contract/warranty/bill. the installation company may even be doing it for free or being sued in cort for failing to deliver on their contract.
Don't forget there's business in all of this.
That's why it's always good to check for leaks with nitrogen prior to vacuuming a system other than that great video life of a HVAC tech
I am surprised you didn't pressure test _before_ pulling your initial vacuum. That install was a complete disaster.
10:13 haha. "Lovely", it's funny, because I literally say the exact same thing every time I come across a crap situation. While just look at it, "Lovely".
Nice work enjoy your day.
I work on alot of these bryant systems. Mostly communicating interfaces. There pretty simple easy to work on and efficient if installed right. More problems with the communicating ones where the only thermostat you can use is super expensive.
We use ecobee sometimes and they are nice and expensive but I'm a simple guy. And I like the "normal " ones - off, heat, em heat, cool.
HVAC, plumbing, electrical trades doesn't matter... you always end up having to deal with someone else's mess they left behind...
Great work!
Love the vacuum pump cord👍
Those E250's are great trucks. Last production in 2014 unfortunately. Mine got totaled in 2020. Got a 2018 GMC Savana 2500 18 months old. Didn't want the Euro style van. Anyway - sticker was 19.5k --- same truck today 33k. Bad time to need a truck. You probably look both ways 2-3x...but you never know. Great videos. Steve in NC
I love that little pigtail cord you used. Great idea 💡 Going to throw one in my van. That will be very handy.
keep being awesome buddy
make a weld whitout nitro ... wow...good job...and no pressure test...
For sure we just don't know in times like these might of been went for the cheap tech or a rush job one thing for sure Curtis did it right a happy customer at this 😀
Wow! Nice work 👍🏼
After a day like you had prior to this mess you handled things probably way better than I would have. The older I get it seems to take less to set me off lol
From an installer of 20 yrs. We do this when there's a leak. Or if we are not paid. We hold the air hostage till paid then go vac and start up
I am surprised that you didn't walk away from that job.
You looked like you were dragging Ass on that job, I have been that way before and knew it must have been hexed. Old Copper tubes just sitting in the weather are hard to solder from oxidation. I sure don't blame you for not working on that! Thanks for the Video 😃
if only they made sanding cloth/paper or wire brushes....
Sounded hot as hell too, lol
@HVACGUY 21:14
Do you prefer heated diode or infrared leak detectors?
great job 👌... nice 👍 tools👏
I really should try it,
Great video as always. That sure was a mess. Great work though. I’m a 22 year HVAC tech and love your work. There is not sugar coating anything. Was wondering what smart watch your wearing?
Apple series 7
Maybe look into a turbo torch drop the oxygen and only need a b acetylene tank. Works great
Well that was certainly a fine mess! Glad you got away from that one.
just when ya think it can't get any worse, there it goes!!!
I just got my EPA Universal certificate and now I can fix my own units.
wow, a drain line routed off to the side. what a concept.
White and red, unless that’s how they did it inside but most of the time I like to use blue and yellow if there is more then two wires
Good job!
What would you consider to be the life expectancy of an air conditioner in central Florida??? I bought my house 22 years ago and immediately had the air conditioning unit cleaned and serviced. I have had zero service done to my A\C unit. Should I call for service or leave it alone???
Are electrical whips for the low voltage code in your area? I like the idea but nobody does that around here.
Oh boy. Nothing like being called to a job that someone else opened a can of worms AND left the lid off expecting you to find the worms.
What was that outlet you hat on the contact her I need to get one of those I do startups and a lot of times the outlet next to the condenser isn't wired up
How often are you filling your nitrogen tanks? I am going thru a tank about ever other ac unit I work on?
At Least once a week
If thats a brand new outdoor unit thats not ever been connected, and an indoor unit from 2019. Whats the chances somebody condemed the outdoor unit because of a leak that was actually on the indoor unit?
What he said^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^100%
We like the cussing ones, they’re funny!!! I use to make u new cuss words on the job
Looks like a rental so a landlord special.
Ive had days like this. A simple job turns into a nightmare. Heck you are already neck deep in it. Might as well see it through
Uncle Joe 🙋🏿♂️installed this. I guarantee it!
I almost wanna do a ride along with you one day just to experience the shit you do on a daily basis. Here in Florida doing this for the last 17 yrs I can’t say I’ve seen as many horrible things as I’ve seen in your videos.
Where is he located? It’s obviously the south somewhere
@@AmB39 Georgia I believe.
i did beverage equipment for starbucks where the water destroyed equipment. this field work videos bring me back to how much i hated my life. i know the cursing of a field engineer sent to the wolves brother
Put that filter in the air handler filter track where it does the most good
I did not see ANY switch disconnects installed on any of the outside AC units.
I love that Pan-doit Strap Holden the Torch carrier together :) My daddy always Said , If it works Don't "touch it '' Haha Got to Love them peeps from the south of the U.S.A. :P
