I once went to a customer's house who was the renter and the landlord would not fix the broken 4" sewer line that was washed out and going to the city main. The customer a young girl with a young baby explained to me that the Child Services was coming back to take her child if it was not fixed, she did not have family or any other place to go stay. I called the landlord and they could not afford to fix it or just didn't want too. Upon me telling the girl I couldn't fix it due to no payment she started crying, thats all it took, my heart just gave in, I called dispatch and talked to my boss and told them the situation and that I was replacing all the 4" line from the house to the street with or without their permission (it was about a $1000 worth of work) they could fire me, take it out of my check or what ever they wanted. I had plenty of pipe, cleanout's and fittings on the truck already so they said do what you got to do. You know I did ( :

Good for you, Paul. I don't know how in the hell people sleep at night knowing that they took advantage of an elderly person. I'm not an HVAC man, but shit like that pisses me off.
Do what I do carry some short planks in your van and make a temporary floor in the attic/loft space then take them back up when finished ,don’t forget to screw them down so they don’t shift when your moving about
I had my own HVAC company for 8 years here in L. Bucks Co.,PA. I wasn't perfect, but when I did my installs, I did them with the idea that would have to come back one day to service them and I wanted to be reasonably easy to work on them , BUT.....I was also thinking of the techs behind me.I didn't want anyone saying " Who did this botch job" ?
I was proud of my installs. I made the access panels clear of refrigerant tubing,flexduct,gas/flue pipe and ALWAYS ripped some 3/4" plywood for a sturdy platform. I have absolutely NO respect for hackmasters. I didn't care if the attic was hot.I would do somethings a little different today, but its too late.
I do primarily commercial service .
LOL. Today I had to shut down 5 out of 10 YORK 10 ton packaged units for Bad Gas valves, inducers,and a bad heat exchanger . These RTU's are not that old.
Anyway, I hope I'm not coming off like I'm blowing smoke up my ass cuz I'm not. I'm 60, been in it since I was 28ish
And I should know alot more then I do and that's a understatement. Lol

You are one of a few. I have been doing HVAC for 38 plus years……and I see this way to often. People associate us when we drive up to the customer home, as a crook because of this kind of “workmanship” (being polite) even though we bust our butts to do it right, and sincerely work hard to give the customer a professional job and their moneys worth.
Thank you that you care enough about your work and the customer to try and straighten out these jobs because you are a man with some character.Some things are worth more than money.
I watch all of your videos. I am still learning and you present these in a way that we can learn and understand what you are doing. Just keep up the good work, keep loading these videos, and keep your good heart.

That's why I love the community I live in we have a group that goes around fixing other people's shady installs for free for elderly people or people in fixed incomes we actually have a state program that pays for the cost.
Hey Curtis. This video upset me too. In my 41+ year's of doing service, installs and maintenance, things of this nature are very frustrating, to say the least. Fortunately, I'm now a stationary engineer working at a large data center in California, so crawling in attics and under house's is a thing I don't have to deal with. How you managed to access that air handler was impressive. Keep up the excellent customer service and work you provide. Stay safe young man.

It was impressive but honestly nothing compared to some I’ve accessed here in Ohio. The tightest and most impossible equipment that some put in is a tragedy.
Curtis, first thanks for caring. I worked for a local oil co once and went on a no heat call that had come in late on a Friday but wasn’t given to me until first thing Monday. I found a little old lady in her kitchen with four gas burners and the oven on with the door open. She had spent the weekend in the kitchen trying to keep warn. I repaired her oil fired boiler and got her heat. When I got back to the office I ask for her bill and paired it on the spot. I told the office to never put off another call for no heat.
Curtis this lady is so fortunate that she called you. Of course she should have called you first. I have been in the construction business for most of my life. I can say without a doubt there are more dishonest people in construction than any other industry i have ever dealt with. There are far more dishonest "contractors" whether general or sub than used car dealers by far. The only other industry that is close is financial institutions. As for the barking dogs who will not shut up and their owners will not handle them - well a tranquilizer dart gun would be a nice thing to add to that nice tool backpack!!

Sorry to see this kind of work done by people who really don't know what they are doing. I have no experience myself but by watching your videos I'm learning just what your type of jobs take and that you take pride in every job you do with integrity and honesty. Sometimes you just have to do what you can do in situations like this one. I've done work and repairs on cars when I was doing mechanical work and ate my labor costs and sometimes even paid for parts if needed for people that were taken advantage of. I think all trades have these type of people that just want to make a buck and rip people off that turns into even more costs and work down the line. One of the reasons I got out of the business of being a mechanic early on in life. I went into the Service in the medical field and spent 20 years in service to our county. I have never regretted going into the service. Thank you for being the person you are and caring for others like you do. Take care of yourself because if you don't others who need you will not get you to help them when the chips are down. I'm also sure your family wants to keep you in their life too. I had a similar situation in oklahoma where I live tried to have the city inspector force the guy to make it right but the installer was un licensed and I found out per the inspector with him not having a license to potentially threaten they had no recourse the inspection service can only threaten and manipulate us licensed guys. Pretty crazy they said its a civil matter and she would need to sue the guy who of course has no money to take. Pretty sad. Thanks for the video.
Great work my friend. Just got my electrical contractors license last year but been in the trade for 20. I hate shoddy work done to unsuspecting customers. If it's doable I'll donate my time to help them out.
Thanks for what you do. A good Technician is hard to find. I had to stop doing Service because I would work myself half to death helping people out because some jack off ripped them off. I appreciate what you do brother . Keep up the good work.
That's a big reason why I always did all of my own work in and around the house, so I know HOW it was done, WHAT materials were used etc., I don't trust contractors like the roofers that showed up at my workplace with a van full of Mexicans and they replaced the whole building's roof in a day, you KNOW they used the cheapest 3 tab crap, didn't do the flashing right and soon after we started getting a leak.
Another contractor put an addition on, maybe 4000 sq ft I forget, metal slanted roof had to merge with the existing angled 3 tab the Mexicans installed, they had to cut the metak roof's standing seams at an angle for the valley, and right there ice dams would form and water leaked in, they came back to "fix" it by putting a heat tape in the valley with about a 100' extension cord run up and over and down the other roof and hanging down in the alley where the A/C condensers were to plug in an outlet down there. The extension cord was simply plugged into the heat tape, wrapped with a bunch of black tape and laid in the metal valley!
Well I had to go up there every 1-2 weeks to change filters on the 2 roof units and there's 6" of snow and ice on the roof and that fking heat tape with 120vac is buried under the ice and snow on a METAL roof!
They had a local HVAC guy work on the "dependable 92" furnaces and he claimed a heat exchanger was cracked on this fairly new unit- it was still under warrantee for the heat exchanger, and he tried to blame a dirty filter making it overheat as the cause (I changed all of them every Monday) I told him in front of my foreman- you mean to tell me this expensive furnace doesnt even have a $2 sensor that senses airflow thru the filter or it getting too hot, to protect THE most expensive part in the furnace??? I told him the warrantee which I read to them gave them a convienient OUT to get around replacing warrantee items like that- it detailed dirty filter/replacing filters and the warrantee is void etc- there's NO WAY you can prove you changed the filter and at what frequency, so that's how they get out of the warrantee, I told him he was full of shit, he left and the furnace worked fine for several years, funny how the "cracked" heat exchanger suddenly wasnt a problem any more.
I recently installed my own replacement furnace with all new ducts and everything, and water softener with sweatted copper.
The furnace is now in a central position in the basment with easy access all sides, drain hose, intake, exhaust piping, gas line and electric I intalled all of it myself and it is so much better than the 1988 Lennox G11e furnace I had since 2003.
I did all my own roofing, from tearing off FOUR layers of 3 tab and old cedar shakes to adding plywood, Tamko moisture/ice guard was added over the entire roof, new eave and ridge vents added and NO leaks.
I only buy quality materials etc after carefully selecting and researching, I don't go cheap, so when I installed the water softener the valves were all high quality solid brass full port, I know that a contractor would get the cheapest ones at Menards and then you get stem leaks, or they don't work well any more.
Same way I only used 12ga copper wire and steel boxes throught the house, steel conduit and armored steel cable, a Square D QO 200 amp breaker box

Big big difference between using a licensed contractor versus one who is not, you have monetary and corrective recourse when you use a licensed one that screws up, In the other case you are left holding the crap.
Stupid comment. Licensed contractors are insured (so if they burn your house down). Plus if they have a hvac contractors license then they more than likely have had years of hvac experience and have taken hvac classes (required by the government) and they should know what they are doing vs unlicensed contractors can be complete idiots.
ABSOLUTELY!! Either they don't care, the whole company doesn't care, or they just have no idea what they're doing and cannot plan ahead. I installed allot of air handlers above hard ceilings in stores within malls and I always planned that I would be the service tech when and if it breaks down, I made sure I had good access. There are so many aspects of an installation that are very easy to some of us, but others seem to do things the worst way possible or they just undersize the duct and oversize the unit. I was the only NATE certified guy in the whole company as I was the only one that passed the core and test, within a week every truck had a "We Are NATE Certified" sticker on their doors...
Poor quality is poor quality irregardless of licensed or not.
It doesn’t matter about license or not ,I see companies hiring kids with no experience. They low ball those kids big time. Those kids end up in you’re house doing service to you’re unit, those kids are not techs they are trained to sell.
The hack couldn't figure out how to flip the coil so he had to put it backwards... I've seen a guy put the supply side on the return grill and return on the supply 🤦♂️ I feel for grandma and Good job on fixing her up
What's funny is that the unit comes with instructions on how to properly install it. And they can't even do that!

@@sprockkets exactly…they come with Installation instructions, reading is essential. I install Ruud products and I still read the instructions if it’s a size or seer I haven’t installed tons of times. If there’s a hint of doubt READ the Instructions. Even excellent seasoned installers often “check the book”. Any time my helper asks me something like “what blower speed do we need” I always say “did you read the instructions? What does it say? I know it’s going to say “under .5 IN WC use tap x and over .5in WC us tap Y”. I want my guys in the habit of reading and checking constantly.
I went to a customers house about a year ago. She said a previous company claimed there was a crack in her Heat Exchanger. They red tagged the furnace and told her it wasn't safe to run. She said she was scared but the way he pushed and pushed that narrative made it seem almost unhonest. Safe to say when I got there and she told me what happened instead of just looking with a mirror, I ripped out the entire Heat Exchanger itself and looked. Not a single crack. It enrages me knowing that people like this are in our field and take advantage of people who aren't as educated as we are. How do people sleep at night knowing they've done this.
why not just do a combustion analysis rather pull the hx?

All these installs with the secondary drain outlet still plugged. If the primary clogs, the air handler floods, soaks the insulation, and drips out wherever, and the emergency drain pan rusts..
Pipe those secondary outlets into the emergency drain line. Primary cloggs, condensate runs out the emergency drain line, inside the cabinet stays dry, emergency pan doesn't rust.

I personally will not hesitate to call out bad contractors and do whatever I can to put out of business as long as I gather evidence beyond convincing to do so. Here in my state, if you're licensed and regulated they will investigate, and I will hound them to death to do something. It's the unlicensed ones that really can't be touched and nothing happens and get away with it. Thank god there are contractors like you. Keep up the good work good karma will come your way.
Well I am impressed you made it to the access on the handler. Second, Damn who came up with that install setup. I have had to clean up other installers crap but I think that one topps them all.

After a hurricane, it's full of unlicensed contractors, I had one replace my condenser in 40 minutes without using nitrogen. 6 months later I had the TXV replaced on the evaporator coil by another company, the condenser was freezing up.

It definitely matters what company you use. I used to install ACs. Make sure the company you use gets permits for an inspection. I tried to work for one company and they didn’t give us permits for a county inspection or get the equipment we needed to do the job the right way. I had to quit fast. It just wasn’t right. Other companies I worked for did a good job at making sure everything was professional.

I am on the Georgia Alabama line right outside of Tallapoosa Georgia. I believe code in Georgia is at least 30 inches of serviceability and platform in front of unit. You can tell that was an unlicensed individual that did that job

Unfortunately, I see this across all the trades that why when I call someone to do a job for me I make sure they are licensed & bonded be they ever set foot on my property. The cheapest is not always the best or it may turn out very expensive for you in the long run.

Most municipalities can punish licensed contractors in their county or state.
Most places rarely do anything about the unlicensed business.

You are correct breaking red to the outdoor unit won't shut it off but will make the board in the outdoor unit not operate properly red is used to power board for time delay and run time in heat mode on heat pumps for knowing when to initiate a defrost cycle . looks like wet of dry PVC glue and I have had calls on new units no cooling and drain pan full and the reason why was that wet or dry glue will close the inside of pipe at joint and stop up drain line also looks like air handler is past aux drain pan and can allow water not to go into aux drain pan and drain line on aux pan should have ball valve

We did the time going to school getting our license and carrying all the proper licenses and bonds then they come out sell jobs to unlicensed people and we have to try and fix the mess . I understand your frustration with the installation of the air handler. BUT, that wasn’t the cause of the unit being down. A simple braze on that discharge line would’ve most likely got her back online, if there weren’t any other leaks. Just an observation from a fellow technician. Love your channel. Hope all is well.
Those Rheem air handlers are designed to be convertible, upflow, horizontal left or horizontal right. He was just TH-cam installer and left his phone at home that day 😂.

I was in South America and I got a call saying my kitchen air con. Was out. We had a regular guy to do work not only at the restaurant but at home gave him plenty of work he was licensed and a good record. I told my chef at the kitchen to call Arron our air conditioned man. When I got back a week later I found the unit nor repaired and was furious as my people had to work in these conditions . I called Arron he said “ I know what is wrong with your unit You Need A New one! I asked if he came over to look at the unit he said Yes he was kind of nasty about it I think he was smoking weed! I went up on the roof changed a fuse and the compressor came on and the unit worked for 10 years
Well Arron never got any more work from me
Ken was another air condition man licensed and well known in the area with a good record , we were kind of pals , gave him plenty of work then all of a sudden he started doing all kind of unnecessary work and telling me I needed a new coil and when he installed it he called in a panic saying the guy who made it did a bad job and it was the wrong size and did not fit , He was not truthful about this plus other things that I fixed myself he and Arron just seemed to all of a sudden go nuts also I just remembered this contractor who has worked in this area for years came to the house said the reversing valve was stuck and to fix that cost $1500. ???? He put in a used compressor which he said “ I’ll back it up 100% “ well the next season it was low on gas and he would not respond to our calls . I had a air handler blower motor go out and got an estimate of $800 . So I did some research and bought a new motor for $100 and put in myself in under 2 hours worked fine

I keep 3/4 plywood pieces to create a temporary "floor" for times when I have to "camp out" on rafters like this in awkward positions.
114 resting pressure is what 40 degree ambient so its probably leaked out and holding gas or its 40 degrees there.
The nuts who put it in, they never thought about how hard it be to work on . they just wanted there money and run..People like that give good people a bad name.. thanks for helping us old people out....

I fix a lot of things for elderly or poor people for free it peaces me off when contractors take advantage of people like this that are easy to trick that place their faith on your service it’s a-shame that people will go that far To make a few extra dollars I don’t know how they sleep knowing they ripped off a vulnerable customer
Here in AZ, I replaced a furnace for an elderly low income couple. The county worked with an organization, Council On Aging, which paid the cost.

Not that it's right but when a person can buy a 2 ton split online for$2000.00 and get it installed for $1200.00 .....that's $3200 vs being quoted $8000.00 by an ac contractor. $5000.00 is too much profit. My neighbor is being quoted $15,000 for a 4 ton split and I know the equipment costs are around $3,000.00. that's a $12,000.00 markup.....that's bullshit. That's what opens the door for other crooks to come in and undercut you.

Hey Guy! There are some guys who have their own YT channel showing how they show up on some terribly overgrown yard and trim all of it for free. They make their revenue from getting a million tubers watch a 45 to 90 minute video of their doing a $1500 or more job doing good for some downtrodden old soul with a hopelessly messy yard, front and back. You ought to consider doing a solid for that old lady and reinstall the furnace for free, right after calling the prison and asking the warden to leave that SOB installer in the hot box outside for the rest of his life.

If I was doing this, I would offer to install air handler and redo the duct and wiring for free or on a plan to cover time only that she can afford a direct payment to you. On the other side the Condenser will not be covered under warranty but look into it to see what the supplier might help out with? It could be a tax write off on donations. I've done it in the past and it worked out for me.
I ran into something similar with her grandma in home Depot I overheard her speaking to the person saying that her thermostat was bad and she needed a new air conditioner and I couldn't let it stand talk to her found out the company had came in couldn't fix it and told her she needed a new one called her took $3,000 deposit for a gas fired furnace when the neighborhood doesn't even have gas I went to the house checked out the unit it was a wonderful old 35-year-old unit solid clean and only issue other than having Mercury thermostat was a loose wire down on the terminal on the air Handler, I had to become the intermediate and talk with the air conditioning company about ripping her off and giving her the $3,000 back if not it would have a lawyer involved and sue the company
In north Carolina you have to be a licensed contractor to buy equipment or major repair parts the homeowner can buy the equipment and parts but have to show proof of ownership

I know this is a few months later, I was a ac and heating tech for several years long ago and worked for a company just for a month and a half. Their main ac and heating guy was by far the worse I’ve ever seen and the bosses thought he could walk on water. After a few bad exchanges with him and the bosses I left just because of the same in this video. Over the years of working hvac and boiler maintenance I found out there are way more bad apples than there are good. A person has to do their homework on who they get to do work now days more than ever.
I think that quality contractors need to publish the NAMES of companies and workmen that do poor quality work. This is how they will be eliminated from the industry. Also if the county/city required permit and an inspection, they need to be held accountable for ripping off the property owner who PAID for an inspection.
I hate the Rheem heat pumps they have problems with leaks in the high pressure switch tube and right where you found that one
