It’s VERY quick and nimble and with the seats down it has plenty of room for his business. Small enough to park anywhere fast good handling and very attractive… in a smaller package. I used to have a 2018 Hyundai Konda Limited 1.6T and I actually loved it, but I had so many issues with the DCT and it ended up being a lemon. I got a Mazda. CX5 instead, but I do miss my Kona at times.
@@btherealbb We had a Hyundai Elantra 2013 which we traded in for a Tesla Model Y, and a Dodge Caliber 2008 which we traded in for the Kona. The newer models of the Kona are actually really cool looking.
So far the DCR on my Kona N turbo is ok. My last Subaru suffered from a rubbery CVT, so this DCT seems to be an improvement. Overall, I’m very pleasantly surprised by the Kona. Great warranty if there are any problems.
The dry DCT is fine for the Kona given its mission to be sporty on the road. Mild off-road? HELL NO. Buy the upcoming midfresh Kia Seltos for mild off-roading, because that vehicle will have the 8 speed conventional auto.
I have this same exact car- same color even. It's my "second car" and I'm overall happy with it. Got the AWD for snowy winters- no one is taking SUVs like this off road anyway. Likes: The cabin seems to be built for passenger room, not cargo so front seats have more room than you'd think. Gas mileage is 30+ (after 1000 miles for break in). Lane keep assist is better than my Acura. Sound system is pretty good too for a low end segment. My gripes: As he said, in regular driving, the engine is LETHARGIC coming off the line. "Sport mode" does help a lot, but the car doesn't stay in sport when you shut the car off. I'm not a fan of the way the auto industry is moving to this "plastic cladding" for wheel wells / fenders. Even Lexus is doing that. Looks and is cheap. That's why I got the Thunder Gray- basically blends the cladding to the body color. Weird gripe but the Hyundai lego block grill- extremely hard to wash and wax all those nooks & crannies- spend like 2 hours cleaning the bugs off that grill. Overall, I'm happy with the car. Woulda got the N if it was AWD. Would buy again.
Drove a Kona as a rental first time this week. Nice little vehicle. I’m 6’8” and head and leg room in drivers seat was exceptional. Would consider this or the electric version. Thanks.
Sofian, thank you for finally having a Hyundai/KIA review that starts off by having a title which includes a criticism. This signals that you are potentially REVIEWING KIA/Hyundais and not just presenting them like you were the paid company rep that you are.
@@clifhellner1493 sometimes it takes time to respond like he said, i do wish it could be quicker responding to throttle input, but then i guess that's it's how they designed it. Still a great ultra compact suv though. Sometimes it for me will also do this, as throttle as being applied the clutch is being engaged for longer than usual then will disengage and the car will jerkily move.
2023 Kona’s will be arriving at the dealerships soon. Will be interesting to see if Hyundai addresses the DCT issue with the new model. 2024 Kona will get a refresh. Hybrid Kona’s are available overseas.
It's a nicely style subcompact vehicle. But, I wouldn't call it an SUV. The ground clearance is less than 7 inches, and the interior could be packaged better to maximize space - check out the Honda Fit (car) and the subcompact Honda HRV (CUV). I remembered the days when the RAV4 & CRV were labeled properly as "CUV". Overall, I see this 5-dr "hatchback" as a perfect city car.
I've driven a few Hyundai/Kia's with the 1.6t, and for the money this gives plenty of connectivity and tech for the money. Out of all their models with the 1.6t the Forte GT seems to be tuned the best, even better than the Elantra in my opinion.
I would absolutely agree. I just got a Forte GT a few weeks ago after driving a few of the other small Hyundai/Kia models and the powertrain tuning definitely stood out compared to the others.
I was just talking about the styling to someone and said the same thing, I do like the slimmed down headlamps, but I definitely liked the rest of the front styling on the previous generation
I was cross shopping the Kona and Seltos. At the end of the day, the Seltos won. Sure, it's a bit more than the Kona. But the overall appearance, bigger interior, and more practical cargo space won me over. Not to mention, the headroom. I felt cramped in the Kona. I also find it funny that Hyundai detuned the engine a bit as I have the same Engine/Trans combo in my Seltos and it isn't really lethargic for me, throwing the trans into 'sport' mode also helps make it a bit snappy too.
In the same boat you were in. I like the N Line version of the Kona. It has a sporty appearance. The Seltos is sharp, but looks a bit more traditional and bland to me. Kona, is basically a hatch. However, the DCT in the Kona has me a bit worried, as pointed out in this review. Maybe Seltos is the way to go. What trim did you get?
@@clifhellner1493 I have the SX Turbo with the DCT. I don't do a lot of stop and go traffic in my daily driving, so it hasn't been a pain for me. Took some getting used to as I drove a Chevy Cruze with a 6 speed auto prior to that. So figuring out the best throttle position on take off so I avoided killing the clutches in the DCT took a day or two. Now I have no issues with it in traffic, just can't really let it crawl like an automatic. As long as you don't beat it, it's pretty smooth in regular driving.
So, it’s not that there’s anything wrong with a DCT, it’s that you just have to figure out how to drive them? I heard another reviewer say that. Sounds like that was your experience as well. Which, I’m sure isn’t rocket science to figure out. SX Turbo, nice! Not sure if you have seen the 2O24 Seltos (I believe it’s available overseas), but it’s pretty sweet looking! The interior is really nice. Thanks for the reply.
Nope, I just have 2022 model in Steel Grey (Silver). As for the DCT, a lot people think "performance" when they see that (this ain't no Volkswagen Golf with the DSG). That isn't always the case. Sure, it adds a bit of fun to car, but it's by no means a rocket ship. In this application, it's more meant for fuel economy than sportiness. However, once you figure out how to take off with it, it's kinda fun smoking the odd wannabe ricer in a 3300lb SUV with it in Sport mode.
I’m actually sitting at the Hyundai dealership now. Just drove a Kona 2022 Limited and a 2022 Kona N. As for the drive, The Limited Kona…definitely some turbo lag. Was able to get it on the interstate, once on the interstate it was smooth. Pretty quick. Fun to drive. Did a little stop and go, didn’t seem to bad. Little jerky, but nothing to crazy that I noticed. Main issue for me, was stepping on the pedal and getting that lag. Not terrible, but noticeable. Found it interesting, that Hyundai even puts a little brochure in the Kona, explaining the DCT and how it can overheat. Yeah, that’s a bit concerning 😐. Kona N…Pretty sweet! Fast. Virtually zero lag. You hit it and it goes. Wish I could have driven both for a few hours, rather than a 15min test drive.
The Kona will be getting 2 more powertrains for the next generation model. It's the hybrid & plug-in hybrid that is the same as the new Kia Niro. Also, the dry DCT will be replaced by the conventional 8 speed auto that was recently dropped into the midfresh Kia Seltos.
It’s interesting how Hyundai is sticking with the turbo in the Kona while Kia deleted the option from the soul when they are essentially the same car. I think Kia wants you to get the Seltos if you want the turbo engine.
Other reviewers have mentioned the how vehicles equiped with 1.6L turbo and FWD have difficulties putting that power to the ground. Not so for the AWD versions. Kia's decision might be inline with this since the Soul is only available as FWD as the Seltos is AWD for the 1.6L models.
It's not at all uncommon for vehicles with the same engine to have slightly different power outputs. This engine gets 180HP in the K5, 201 in the Forte GT, 195 here, etc. The same applies to the 8 different outputs of the VW/VAG 2.0 turbo, 3.0 turbo, (Never mind the Macan with the same powerplant and different HP). The Hemi 5.7 gets 357 in the 2023 Grand Cherokee, 375 in the Charger/Challenger, 392 in the Grand Wagoneer, and 395 in the RAM 1500.
Hyundai never lowered the horsepower of the 1.6t engine in the Kona. In fact, they raised the horsepower from 175 to 195. Only their compact sedans get 201hp. I bet those cars are making more than 201hp. Pity those vehicles lacked a LSD to put all that power down.
Not a kia hyundai fan but this is really my fav little suv. They look nice in person vs videos. no complaints bout it. Rare for me. Id get this same one tho. same same
Wow 6.49 sec 0-60!!!! I remember when the Subaru wrx came out… I think it had a sub 7 seconds 0-60 time which was lightning back then. Kudos to Hyundai for disrupting.. EVERYTHING!
I personally bought a Kona N Line hoping it was a tuned down version of a Kona N. Unfortunately (for me), its a sportier version of the Kona. The performance of the 7 speed DCT is so bad for me, it ruins my entire experience with the car. Gear switching can be so slow and laggy that it can be very jarring at times. Everything else with the car is spectacular. If you want a sporty Kona, make the jump to the Kona N. I wish I did.
Literally just left a Hyundai dealership, as I’m in the market for a Kona, preferably an N-Line. Really like the look of that trim. They had a Limited (same engine as the N-Line) and a Kona N. Drove both for about 15min. My takeaway…The Limited: I was able to drive it on the interstate. Turbo lag is very apparent, as you mentioned. Not terrible I guess, but it’s there. You hit it and it takes a bit to get going. Once there, I found it to be really smooth, quick and fun to drive. Did a small amount of stop and go. Little bit jerky, but not horrible. Main thing for me, was the lag. This Limited was just off the truck. Found it interesting that inside the Limited, Hyundai had a small pamphlet explaining that the DCT can overheat in certain driving conditions. Found that a bit concerning. Kona N…Wow, pretty sweet! No lag. You hit it and it responds quickly. Very fast and sporty. Two completely different driving experiences. Out the door, they wanted just over $40K for the N. 😐
I really think that the Term SUV shouldn't be used on these type vehicles anymore.. it's More like a MUV .. (Mall Utility Vehicle) when you say SUV I go back in time to K5 Blazers and Ford Broncos .
Because Hyundai/Kia are cheaply built and pack the cars with cheaply built technology and body panels and it’s horrible. I’ll buy a Toyota before I buy a Hyundai. I currently own a VW and I can’t see how people cheap out on quality when buying a car.
@@kevs2good133 you cannot make a statement like that today: Sonata came ABOVE Honda and Toyota in the most recent crash tests. You also know that Hyundai makes its own Steel? Main reason they can price them better than anybody else.
I kinda find the DCT to be a iffy transmission based on applications. I drive a Forte Gt and it performs reasonably well and definitely faster then my friends who have a stick. Maybe the programming between cars is different.
Hyundai limits the power in the first gear to preserve the life of the dry DCT. AWD is probably another factor why they limited the power too. I bet the FWD models are programed closer to the Forte GT/Elantra N-Line. The DCT is a delicate transmission that will never recommend to automotive delayed (non enthusiasts) drivers.
@@clifhellner1493 well in stock form, it's a little bit faster then a stick. The revs aren't as high when cruising. And I've gotten around 38+mpg when I drive sensibly. It's not perfect. If you drive around in sport mode, it can be a little jerky like a stick at times, depending on your throttle input. Overall it shifts pretty well when driven normally. It can heat up on hot days when driven hard. I haven't had this issue and I drive kinda spirited 75% of the time. If you're gonna track it, I'd say get the stick.
Thanks, however as this review states, there’s some pretty serious lag on the Kona Limited with its DCT. Actually went today to test drive a Limited Kona, to confirm. It’s laggy, but once you get past the lag, it was smooth and pretty quick and fun to drive.
I thought Sofyan said this was based on the accent platform then he said around 8:30 that this is built on the older Elantra platform. I tell you when this happens it feels like a reviewer is just throwing out speculation instead of hard facts. Sofyan often refers to himself as a journalist even though he didn’t go to Journalism school. To me this just undermines or loses credibility. If this is his only job he needs to nail the details before posting these productions. I get the feeling at this point that I should consider this as nothing more than free entertainment. I would be ticked off if I was paying for this and making car buying decisions off of this. He also uses new words once or twice that he hears someone else say. In this video it was that the headlights were “divorced” from the DRL’s. And that phrase has always been used by Alex on autos. Another time he kept days Bespoke when reviewing an expensive car. You’ve never heard that word from him again. Lol Today the big word was diminutive. We won’t hear that anymore either. I guess I’m just complained about all the things that annoy me. I took a break from this channel for 6 months. The competition has passed him by. He is complacent. I’m going elsewhere for reviews. Take care all.
head-up dis·play noun: heads-up display a display of instrument readings in an aircraft or vehicle that can be seen without lowering the eyes, typically through being projected onto the windshield or visor. "A head-up display, or heads-up display, also known as a HUD ..." "The heads-up display that lets you keep your eyes on the road..." Step one of correcting someone is making sure they're wrong.
The quality of Korean cars are so bad I vomit whenever I knock on the door panels and touch the materials on the inside. I’ll buy a Toyota before I buy a Hyundai/Kia the quality is just so bad. (currently own a GTI built like a tank and solid feeling)

@@nsleeper3737 N…. we’ll see. Gonna go drive one tomorrow
Wait does it have rain sensing wipers?
Yes.
@@pepeshopping it’s not advertised online and when I went to purchase one the guy said they took that feature away fro 2022. I’m confused
Do you notice it mostly in city type driving?
@@clifhellner1493 yes
i love this car
Hey sofyan hope your doing well I was wondering when you think your gonna review on the new Tesla model s plaid and the new rivian r1t
Tesla doesn't give out press cars.
18:15 Sofyan likes to feel girth
Nice mpg for an awd
The Kona it’s not exactly the corporate twin of the Seltos, that should be the Creta which is not sold in the US
They're all on the same platform including the Forte. As of right now, the Elantra is on the new platform.
I really think that the Term SUV shouldn't be used on these type vehicles anymore.. it's More like a MUV .. (Mall Utility Vehicle) when you say SUV I go back in time to K5 Blazers and Ford Broncos .
How does something that small weigh 3300 lbs?
Modern safety standards and features.
Because Hyundai/Kia are cheaply built and pack the cars with cheaply built technology and body panels and it’s horrible. I’ll buy a Toyota before I buy a Hyundai. I currently own a VW and I can’t see how people cheap out on quality when buying a car.
@@kevs2good133 are you me?
My Alltrack is a whole 15inches longer, has AWD, a turbo and a big ass glass sunroof and it weighs 100lbs more. Idk why this tiny thing weighs so much
@@kevs2good133 you cannot make a statement like that today:
Sonata came ABOVE Honda and Toyota in the most recent crash tests.
You also know that Hyundai makes its own Steel? Main reason they can price them better than anybody else.
Why do we call some vehicles SUVs when they can’t even get you out of 6” of snow??
I see genesis 6 similarities
My neighbor has a white one 😊 super cute 😳 except the whole Turbo thing 🚫 never again 🤨 new technology or not 😒 no Turbo

N Line doesn’t get paddle shifters.
Why you wait many months to release this video? Trees are not in bloom in August
Still do not like the looks of this hatchback, yes a hatchback because that’s exactly what it is. Glad it does receive more power.
When will you review the new EV BLAZER
I kinda find the DCT to be a iffy transmission based on applications. I drive a Forte Gt and it performs reasonably well and definitely faster then my friends who have a stick. Maybe the programming between cars is different.
Hyundai limits the power in the first gear to preserve the life of the dry DCT. AWD is probably another factor why they limited the power too. I bet the FWD models are programed closer to the Forte GT/Elantra N-Line. The DCT is a delicate transmission that will never recommend to automotive delayed (non enthusiasts) drivers.
Are there any benefits to a DCT?
@@clifhellner1493 well in stock form, it's a little bit faster then a stick. The revs aren't as high when cruising. And I've gotten around 38+mpg when I drive sensibly. It's not perfect. If you drive around in sport mode, it can be a little jerky like a stick at times, depending on your throttle input. Overall it shifts pretty well when driven normally. It can heat up on hot days when driven hard. I haven't had this issue and I drive kinda spirited 75% of the time. If you're gonna track it, I'd say get the stick.
@@clifhellner1493 power feeling, efficiency, gas mileage (no torque converter that wastes power).
You get one of the best MPG in a Turbo of this size.
Thanks, however as this review states, there’s some pretty serious lag on the Kona Limited with its DCT. Actually went today to test drive a Limited Kona, to confirm. It’s laggy, but once you get past the lag, it was smooth and pretty quick and fun to drive.
Not nearly. It has been more that 4 years.
As soon as you say GDI, it’s a no go.
they're reliable
Hyundai needs to upgrade its interiors with more soft touch materials. Hard armrests? C’mon!
Piece of shit cheap cars.

There already is a Kona EV.
Lol
Today the big word was diminutive. We won’t hear that anymore either.
I guess I’m just complained about all the things that annoy me. I took a break from this channel for 6 months. The competition has passed him by. He is complacent. I’m going elsewhere for reviews. Take care all.
Niceee
Scratchy and hard>>> Everything annoys Sea Foam !!
It doesn't launch because it's a DCT and w/o launch control you'll never ever be able to a proper launch 💡
I dunno why people always talk during accelerations!! Can we listen to the car first and you give your comments after?? loll
Head up display, not heads up display. Grrr.
head-up dis·play
noun: heads-up display
a display of instrument readings in an aircraft or vehicle that can be seen without lowering the eyes, typically through being projected onto the windshield or visor.
"A head-up display, or heads-up display, also known as a HUD ..."
"The heads-up display that lets you keep your eyes on the road..."
Step one of correcting someone is making sure they're wrong.
The facelift looks horrendous, tbh. The front design is not cohesive, and just weird.
ALHAMDULILLAH(SWT)- ASTAGHFIRULLAH(SWT).

Dude was just trashing on the car the whole video,
It ugly, just get the N Line, looks much better.

Nice looking rig, with a wrong badge. Would not buy it just because of it.
Limited, why? is this a special modell with limited build numbers or is it only a stupid marketing name from Hyundai?
Well, yes. All the good stuff is "limited" to that trim. There's some things even the N trim can't get without stepping down to the Limited trim.
@@JT-fq2bl Ok thank you.

The 22 Kona got a great review from Consumer Reports and Car and Driver magazines. In ratings of subcompact SUVs it came in second place. The Mazda CX30 is number 1.
