I have visited Japan recently several times because my daughter lives there with her Japanese husband and her baby. I have found. Japanese people polite and helpful. One guy even accompanied me to the taxi rank at the airport to translate where I needed to go to the driver.
Going to japan was my dream in highschool, and finally did it recently. But i can't get how people can take it for granted and treating it like just a cheap trip they can waste by bothering people.
This guy knew what he was doing, knew it was wrong and kept doing it anyway. I say let the Japanese justice system make an example out of him if they want to. You can give someone leniency if they're a teenager or young adult, they made a mistake and then apologize and learn from it, but this guy wasn't that.

As someone born and raised in Africa, in an HIV/AIDs hotspot the idea of some random guy licking a bottle of condiment in a restaurant fills me with horror. I know it can't be spread via saliva however many poeple (including myself) may have sores in their mouth that may bleed, some may bleed when they brush their teeth, some may have blood in their throat etc. It wasn't uncommon for us to hear about confirmed stories of transmission over very simple errors when it comes to cleanliness in restaurants. And the law doesn't allow for you to refuse someone for a job based on their HIV status nor does it entitle you to request someone inform you of their status.
I'm glad Japan is making an example out of him, I live in Japan and I'm so fucking tired of having my image as a foreigner ruined by these streamers who think they can come and do whatever they want. I told people in many posts "people from Tokyo won't do anything about him, let him come to Osaka, people can't wait to meet him here" because the West region of Japan is very different from the East region, people are way friendlier but many can also be very confrontational. it happened exactly what I thought, mf came and tried to do the same thing, got punched kicked choked yelled at until police finally arrested his ass. I hope Japan straight up bans IRL streaming, nobody here likes to show up on someone's video without consent, everybody rolls their eyes when there's someone using their phone on a long ass stick with the front camera on, like "great, for no reason I'm part of your stupid stream now"
I understand your point but cmon man, people not allowed to stream IRL? There are still good people showing Japan for foreigners like me and I love streams in Japan, showing me around, how the culture is, how the people interact. Also, not everyone rolls their eyes when they see an IRL streamer, it really depends on the person. But yes, most people rolls their eyes and I would probably too tbh
Dude got his and his friend's asses beat and still kept on. He didn't even take the police stopping him seriously until they were actually arresting him. Honestly I hope he gets those three years and more.
His friend/cameraman isn't behind bars... he obviously snitched on him but honestly that was the smart move. I know they have enough of a case without the snitch-confession, but they're gonna come at him from EVERY possible angle and when his own friend and countryman throws him under the bus, I'll completely understand why...
I think some people have this misconception about Japan’s juristicial system. They still have capital punishment, such as hanging, so I really wouldn’t try to mess with that system…
There were a string of cases where people were licking ice cream tubs and putting them back in the store fridge few years ago. Apparently one woman faced a felony in the state of Texas for that, punishable by minimum 2 and up to 20 years in prison.

Unless it's a group of friends/relatives who have an understanding, or some sort of ongoing joke, it's too risky that someone with an allergy, or any other number of stupid shit you can't plan for happening and going bad. Story time: When I was in high school some dipshit wanted to prank another goofy student (who was autistic) by pouring eye drops into his yogurt at lunch. I recall a few other's at our table being iffy on it, and I decided just to keep the autistic kids attention our direction so his food wouldn't get messed with. The asshole kept telling us "nah dude, you just put a couple drops eye drops in his food, and he'll start shitting his pants uncontrollably, it's hilarious, he'll be good" Either way, it didn't happen, and everyone is safe and sound(well idk what's happened in the last 12 years now, but that incident never hurt anyone thankfully) Fast forward about 5-6 years past my graduation, and I read a news article about some streamer killing themself by intentionally ingesting a bottle of eye drops. Immediately my mind had a flashback and I remembered the interaction at lunch, and I'm kinda freaked out because this dude was apparently giving people potentially lethal symptoms for a quick laugh. Don't fuck with people's food.
Japan generally being a bit more isolationist than other countries in terms of culture and customs makes sense if these IRL shock streamers are the people they’ve been exposed to as “the outside world” They’ve started to open up in recent decades but people like this guy are probably not helping the stereotypes of the “obnoxious foreigner”
This isnt the 1950s. They just have harsh rules. They even abandoned most of their tradition like wearing their own traditional clothes, and abandoning their native religion, etc. Its just a country that is disciplined enough to follow the rules in the book. They dont have things "ok ill let you off with a warning" and such.
I believe they should send him to jail; just to show that Japan won't tolerate this type of behavior from anybody. It wont surprise me if Japan adds new legislation for any situation with streamers that are causing problems/disturbances in the country.
I absolutely think the 3 years is deserved. He kept coming back and causing more trouble even after he was told to stop. He has no remorse and will do it again if he does not face real time.
I hope the pull the ol' re-arrest as soon as they finish with this trial and put him on trial for trespassing. That adds another 3 years. 6 years total would be better. More if they can slap other laws on him.
He ruined his own life, he has no one to blame but himself. Japan has had a lot of obnoxious streamers coming to their country and experience/atmosphere for others. I'm glad your candy has launched though Muta congrats.
Guy living in Japan here. To give some context to "just kicking the bottle", this became a very annoying internet trend in Japan that led to a lot of questions on how often this happens with sushi conveyer belts. Several sushi chains had to repurpose their conveyers to directly send orders to customers instead of the traditional go-around method, so you can imagine the trouble and cost of repairing trust among customers and redoing their sushi conveyers. Yes, the Japanese justice system can be ruthless and unfair, but "just licking the bottle" can cause more destruction than one would assume.
He needs to do time. These nuisance streamers need to learn that stupid games earn stupid prizes. He had EVERY chance to stop himself and think "maybe I shouldn't do the thing that would make me a dozen different levels of horrible🤔"
True. He should have stuck to a "wholesome" Japanese activity such as buying 12 year old junior idol DVDs or going to a handshaking event with little girls. I'm sorry but Japan has greater priorities and that's to deal with their child exploitation issues.
Japan needs to make an example out of him and not pull any punches to deter and disincentivize similar behavior in the future. Have a nationwide PSA encouraging citizens to report any obnoxious gaijin streamers to the authorities.
Having been to Japan a couple of times, this kind of behavior is just wrong and disruptive to everyone else. As tourists, we need to be cognizant that we're guests in someone else's country, and need to act accordingly
He literally, alongside other brainless individuals, has made a few of the good streamers and youtubers like Abroad in Japan and CDAWGVA a bit harder do good things and freely promote Japan
Brazilian speaking here. The judicial system here is flawed and slow, like in many parts of the world. But if that 'crazy' Johnny Somali did his crazy things around here, I guarantee you all, that he would find, in less than 3 minutes, someone much crazier than him and he would probably get one of those 'beatings' that he would never get up again.
Out of all the people he filmed in Japan one man stood out from the rest, while riding the subway joni would just shout out Hiroshima and Nagasaki while everyone else grew uncomfortable to the point when one of the passengers asked another foreigner if he spoke english to which he told joni to stop saying that nonesense, when joni confronted him and asked him where he from the man said he is from Texas thats when joni shut down and shut up.
Concerning the Soy Sauce licking, he was sentenced that heavily because the restaurant franchise lost millions in business in the following month. Nobody wanted to go to any of their restaurant after that. Not just because he did something stupid. Filming and posting it was the worst thing he could have done.
They really should throw the book at him. Making an example of him will likely deter other nuisance streamers from coming to Japan and trying to disrupt the lives of its citizens.
Funny enough, the Phoenix Wright games basically represents Japan's legal system with a lot of these prosecutors throughout these games having "winning streaks". You're basically playing the characters that basically try to change it so the defense wins more often.

@@ColddirectorI’m sorry how long do you think a decade is? Also if you’re aware of his actions, you wouldn’t call it nuisance. The soy sauce licking was a really big deal for a lot of restaurants in japan because most japanese care alot about cleanliness. Alot of sushi restaurants got rid of soy sause bottles and bring you a little pack or small amount in a plate after the incident and other kind of restaurants also do similar things for sauces, surgar stuff like that. The guy that got arrested was not only the one that went viral doing these things and there was a trend on tkitok to do these things.

Not tolerating people being intentionally disruptive and disrespectful to an extreme degree seems fairly reasonable. There needs to be more laws like this in the world, there is too many people acting like dickheads thinking that are amazing and are above common decency and respect for other people.
Just a small note regarding your questions about the legal punishments. The fines are not supposed to be an equivalent alternative to the 3 years of prison time. Its more like a scale. For lesser punishment, you do the fine. For a more severe infraction, you do the prison time. Putting caps on them is meant to prevent an escalation in punishment (so like a judge doesn't go "well the last guy got a 500 dollar fine, and you did a bit more than him, so 600 dollars it is" until ten years down the line the fine is now 3.2 million dollars). It also gives the option of a punishment for someone who otherwise couldn't pay such a fine. Like if some utterly broke person did this crime, and the punishment was just a fine... What're you going to do? Repossess the dude's sneakers?
Nah. They will probably just do something simpler. They will require that all stores must ask for a Japanese ID before selling any Cameras and ban streaming equipment from entering the country without prior approval. Good luck streaming on your phone without a selfish stick and boom mic.
I'm Japanese and I currently live in Japan, but lived in US during my age of 15-24. I'm not defending those stupid streamers in any shape or form, but I gotta say Japanese law enforcement is ethically out of touch here. Cops are allow to ask you for inspection at any moment and you are not allowed to say no. I get inspection frequently, but most of the time I'm just walking on the street, I get inspection because I have beard and wear street casual clothing... Basically I "look" dangerous to them. It's so annoying, and if I say no to inspection they will call back up immediately and quickly escalates. They don't look for on going criminal activity, but they look for people who are different than the rest. It's insult to people who don't believe in violence or crime but just been hipster.
May not be applicable to Japan but over her we had that too in many cities called "stop and frisk" crime rates went down drastically, like literally 20 to 30% and so many guns taken off the street, but they got rid of it because the police kept searching blacks and they called it racist 🤣 lmfao, nevermind the fact those areas were like 95% black tho
I see that, but ethically wrong if they are targeting particular type of personal. If they are inspecting everybody then I'm ok with it. I'm sure any black people will agree if it wasn't only targeted to black citizens. Don't you agree that they should inspect you too? ( assuming you are white ). If they do this to black people?@@NeonValleys
@@Xenon129-nq6hz No, because I don't live in a high crime area. See that's the thing, they say they were targeting blacks, but they weren't, they were searching people who lived in high crime areas of the city, which is why the crime rate dropped obviously. It just so happens that the high crime areas of the city are literally 90%+ black demographically, largely speaking America is insanely segregated, despite all the propaganda. It's very rare neighborhoods would ever not have one super majority, whether that be black white or mexican, even different kinds of Asians, will stick together and form their own neighborhoods. Stop and frisk was never a problem for them either because typically those areas had lower crime rates.

"this is not like judgment", no it is exactly like judgment. They even mention the extremely high conviction rate in the game. The whole point of the game was that it was a miracle Yagami got the defendant ruled innocent given the Japanese court system and the evidence stacked against him.
This is a deserved response. Too many streamers get away with disrupting everyday work and making individuals feel unconformable. ESPECIALLY Kick streamers. I believe this is the price he needs to pay for his actions. He made his bed, now he must sleep in it.
Imprisonment of no more than 3 years or a fine of no more than 500,000 yen (~4660 CAD) exists because the severity of the offense can range drastically. It could be an extremely minor case of damaging a business, in which case a fine might not be more than a hundred bucks. Or it might be a severe crime, where ~4660 CAD isn't enough in which case they look at prison time instead. And that prison time can be just a few days, or it can be the full 3 years in the absolute worst case. It's not equating 3 years to $5000, it's saying anything over $5000 you start giving prison time instead, up to a maximum limit of 3 years.
While I may not have been to Japan, I know some Japanese people who have moved from there to here and they're very nice. From what they told me if you're a forighner you'll get a few warnings on some things you're doing wrong before they really...REALLY go after your ass if you continue to do it. Long story short, Japan is a nice country and the people there are very forgiving, so don't screw it up like this guy. P.S. play the Judgment games, they're very fun.
Ask them about junior idols and ask why Japan only banned child porn about 10 years ago. DO you know that had this guy gone to an event where he can gawk and sing along with 12 year olds, it would have been acceptable? Ask those nice people about that. By the way Japan is trying to stimulate tourism. It's a major Japanese government issue. The way I see it that many people there are unfriendly and not so tolerant despite voting for governments which want to stimulate tourism. They're a somewhat xenophobic society. You know rowdy and rude tourists occur everywhere but we don't lose our sh=t over them. Somehow something this mild occurs and weebs around the world rush out to defend Japan. My goodness.
personally, i think they should make an example out of him. You wouldn't go to a friend's friend's house and start licking their stuff, being obnoxious, and breaking crap. You'd never be invited back and your initial friend would probably not talk to you again, imo. I think he should get the fine, at least a year in prison and then banned from Japan. Dude went into a foreign country and stepped all over their rules and laws, and disrespected their people. screw that guy, again, imo.
if they want to make that guy shit himself, 6 months and deport, if they want to be kinda spicy, a year. if they want to scare tf out of anybody trying to even immitate this guy, they will give him the whole 3 years and document his life on social media.
Remember Carlos Ghosn's dramatic escape from Japan? That was the first time I learned about Japanese legal system. They likely rely on trying to make an example of people specially in high profile cases, so other's don't repeat it, rather that applying uniform justice on all offenders.
Well, other than just the pie chart showing the daily schedule in Japanese prisons, you forgot to mention that Johnny has to live his life obeying commands from Japanese wardens like a lapdog, even in his own cell where he can’t do his own free time freely. Basically, this dude will be constantly pushed around with commands till he starts feeling the regret during his sleep hours.
I don't know if he deserves the 3 years personally, however the Japanese government clearly wants to make an example of this guy and loudly say "if you wanna do dumb $#!@ like this, this is the outcome". So in this regard I agree with the 3 year punishment
The dude got confronted multiple times by people other than the police, had a run in with the Yakuza and still decided to come back and do it all over again. He has shown no remorse (quite the opposite), 3 years is not enough.
I think the issue isn't necessarily "what does he deserve" as much as: "what will make him stop". - People like this have repeatedly shown that they will just take the punishment and come back, since they consider it worth the profit and publicity. Even that guy that got shot while being a nuisance is still doing it. In the end, the point of punishment is not just the punishment, but to deter further violations. And sadly I don't think even 3 years will do that.
@@R4d1o4ct1v3_ Yeah exactly, and fully agree. 3 years sounds like a reasonable punishment, but like you said, they consider it worth it which is very interesting. But a problem is that if the govt decides the punishment for this is 10 years to deter people, they will need to raise all other punishments too, or they will have a lopsided punishment system. You'd potentially get less years for something serious
A lot of people don't understand what it's like to be in Japan or be Japanese. It's very strict and everyone is pretty much encouraged (if not forced) to conform. Anime and movies depict a lot more freedom and individuality in Japan than what actually exists and I think many non-Japanese people don't really get that. I love Japan and I love Japanese culture, but I know from working there many years ago that I couldn't conform to be the kind of person that Japanese society wants, so I came back home. Japan loves tourists, just not the crazy immature ones.

If you do end up living in Japan you can actually have a much better experience not knowing Japanese or being at an eternal beginner/intermediate level because Japanese people will find it cute and still wanna hang out with you
As soon as you start nearing their level, they can start to feel threatened that the only thing they might be better than you at is no longer something they’re possibly better at

They still have capital punishment, such as hanging, so I really wouldn’t try to mess with that system…

For a supposed intelligent (educated) society, so many people assume stupid things quickly. And they don't seem to trust each other.
