How sweet that you are going to make some things for your biggest supporter! It took me forever to be able to make a pretty gather. My biggest tips are to make your first line of gathering stitches a little further in from the seam allowance (so at 3/4" for a 5/8" seam allowance). You will have to pick these stitches out later, but it will make for a pretty gather. Once you sew the gather, instead of pressing the gathered seam, hover your steam iron over that seam from the right side. This way the gathers won't flatten. I'm pretty self-taught too, but this is how I get gathers that look pretty to me.
I have been sewing for a very long time. I you have a lot of gathers to do, the easiest and fastest is with clear elastic. Whatever the gathers are going to be sewn to, measure insides the seam allowance and cut the elastic to that length. Divide the elastic into fourths with pins and do the same with the piece to be gathered. Place the elastic inside the seam allowance of piece to be gathered and take a couple of anchoring stitches. Now take first pin of the elastic and stretch to pin on piece and sew on top of elastic. Keep matching pins and stretching elastic until your done. It’s a lot easier the pulling those threads. I don not recommend this for short seams or sleeve heads. If you are making a straight dress but want a defined waist to maybe wear a belt, this works great so there isn’t bunching underneath the belt

Don't worry about gathers or buttonholes! Just do a few practice rounds on some scraps and it'll turn out great :)
