I realize it's been four years since you put up these videos, but I just wanted to say that your instruction style is very clear and helpful. Thanks for making these.

The POV footage helps a ton with figuring out how to do the moves.

Just started learning Poi yesterday and your videos are the best so far! this is definitely more tricky than it looks! Hoping to practice every day to be ready for summer. one of the issues i am finding is my left wrist is much less coordinated, especially going backwards or trying to switch direction, but its already getting a bit easier. I see alot of crossover with learning piano, and that learning one arm at a time can help before adding together but mostly to get the fundamentals down with Poi. Stalls are also something I am having an issue with, but practicing. Oddly enough, I am finding this is helping with my carpal tunnel pain, so thank you!

When I’m learning new moves, I’ve found that practicing with “air poi” first helps get the move set in your brain without messing up. Then attempt the move on the first swing; stall; attempt; stall etc. it’s much easier & more efficient than trying to launch into it while you are already spinning.
Also, I’ve noticed that it makes a difference which way -left or right- you try to turn depending on which direction you are spinning -forwards or backwards. So if you are trying to turn left spinning forward & cant; try turning right while spinning forward.

I can't believe this video was posted over 8 years ago and only has 39 comments. Guess I'm #40! Hi Drex! It's me, Molly, from Florida! I am happy to tell you that I finally was able to do a couple of reel turns, finally! Going forward into reverse is easier for me than reverse back into forward. I think I got that right? Like you said--the gravity works against me, as I swing over my head. That trick is NOT easy! But I'm going to keep practicing. And I signed up for your online classes, so here I am! Also, I subscribed to your new channel. Looking forward to it a lot!!
I think maybe I am one of those annoying newbies, but we all have to start somewhere, right? So I'm sorry if I comment too much-- it's just that you inspire me, and I am grieving the loss of my Mom, all I had..... Plus, I'm legally blind, way out in the country, stuck at home, (can't drive, no buses, no Ubers out here), so I am BORED and I discovered Poi and am eager to learn! I suck at dance because I could never SEE well enough to learn... But these Poi light up BRIGHT, and I'm attracted to colored lights. (You should see my yard at night!). Today, I bought myself a pair of $$ Poi with the silk fabric, the real silk, and the ball is in a pockwt in the silk, so I hope I will be able to see them for daytime practice, since I have to practice outside or risk bringing down all of the lighting fixtures in the house, hahah! Thanks for reading, Drex, and for the inspiration you keep giving me!

Thanks for the vid! For anyone looking to learn the first hip reel I found it really helped to learn the tictac maneuver and also skip ahead to the second reel as an intermediate step

Hi, im new to poi, and I'm wondering if there is a specific way that the little grip balls should be held. My natural inclination is to hold the little grip balls inbetween my pointer-finger and middle-finger; kind of like holding a cigarette. Is this wrong? I see you're holding the grip balls a little different, so I think I'll try that
