  • We enter our 3rd week of #quarantinecontent by taking a look at poi tricks that can be done with the poi swinging from side to side of the body. Our first example is poi tuck turns! Tuck turns involve swinging the poi back and forth in front of and behind you as you swing them around your body. They incorporate elements of both plane bending as well as flowers and can be thought of as body tracers! Learn how to do them in today's beginner poi tutorial.

I don't know about others, but I'll try to describe how I managed to learn the bottom part of the turn. First, I think it helps to imagine it exactly how you described a flower in the earlier video: stop your hand, let the poi do the turn on its own. Secondly, and this was huge for me: to get used to having my palms face backwards with a slight positioning behind my hips. Once I got familiar with that, it magically started to make sense how it should work out.

omg this is really helpful! I was kinda getting it without knowing how, it was automatic, but your tips have helped me refine it and gain more control! Thank you :)

Hi Drex. I am one of those that was not feeling those tuck turns behind the lower back.....but then I just started to just use the left poi alone and practice the tuck turn..... And then the right alone and finally both......I needed these extra steps to make progress.....
.....also felt compelled to sign up to patreon to support you. Your work deserves support given its quality, expertise and first and foremost your brilliant teaching. Keep it up (for us!), thanks !

I’m loving these videos! Thanks so much for sharing them.
I don’t know if it’s useful for others but it helped me to think that during a reel turn the poi are sweeping either up or down in FRONT of me as I turn but with tuck turns I’m tucking them BEHIND me as I turn. That was the missing step for me and as soon as I realised that I stopped thwacking myself with the poi every turn 🤣

I agree. I spent maybe an hour with this before it just clicked. Find it's like that for most of the moves. Except the hyper loop that tricks eluded me forever. Once I master it I'll probably do that one more than anything mwahahah

Greetings from DC! I actually can't remember what technique I taught in that last video but my guess is it'll be similar. These are mainly intended as a series for people just getting into poi spinning now so they have a progression to work through.

My mind can't grasp this concept. I can do the arm pit tuck and shoulder stop no problem, but can't turn it into a move. I unfortunately still don't understand. Seems like I need to do a stall behind my back and I can't do that. I think I'm doing something wrong :)
