    Good start to the series Pamela. I really enjoy your commentary as you take us through the painting process, leading us through unchartered shapes and colours, markings and layers, explaining your nuances [and everything else] in a relaxed and most professional manner. Pamela, I love watching your process! I've learned so much from watching you lately. I'm not as afraid of mark making as I was before and I feel like I'm loosening up a great deal. I'm also using a more limited palette now and finding a new type of freedom and potential rather than throwing in all my favorite colors; giving my paintings more unity and sense of time & space. I know it feels weird talking to yourself but we really appreciate you and the work you do so that you can share this with us. Please keep them coming! And keep it expressive!

    Great video Pam. I do have a question, when you talk about reactivating the surface what is the cold wax doing? Is it softening the paint already on the panel or just creating a slick surface to make it easy to move the paint?

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there- great question. After speaking with the experts at Gamblin Colors, they recommend the thin layer of Cwm over the top of a dry painting as there is a very small amount of solvent in it, and it makes the surface more receptive to the next wet layer of paint, so as far as I understand, it improves surface adhesion and integrity of the layers. :)

    My finished oil and cold wax paintings always dry to have an unappealing dullness; there is no light reflectivity; it is just a matte finish all over. What would you recommend to bring more brightness to the finished surface?

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Terri - though some like this result which is due to adding cwm to your oils, I, like you, prefer a bit of satiny finish. So, you can add 1 part galkyd gel to 3 parts of your cwm, or more, to get the amount of satin you wish ;) Pam

    I thought you mentioned in another video to add clear gesso to the acrylic underpainting, dry, then add the cold wax/oil. Can you just add a layer of CWM like you did here?

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Debbie - this painting never had any acrylic underpainting; I choose to use the clear gesso as an extra precaution when working over an acrylic but I'm sure some others do not take this step. :)

    May i ask, is cold wax just a preference over linseed. Or is it night and day.

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a medium, as is linseed, but by using cold wax medium, you need not worry about "fat over lean" and it has no oil in it. It is made of beeswax, damar resin and in the case of Gamblin's cold wax medium, Gamblin Gamsol. They are pretty much night in day in consistency and use.

  • @ashimmohaprithibi
    @ashimmohaprithibi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Pamela! Greetings from India ! Really amazing works! Just a little curiosity...do you use cold wax as a medium only or this wroks as a fixative too? technically what exactly are the differences between cold wax and a normal spray fixative ?

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ashim -Hey there! So when I work with cold wax it is considered a medium which, when combined with oil paint in the proper ratios, you don’t need to worry about “fat over lean”. Since it is part of the painting in each layer, I can also use it as a final coat/varnish. It can also be used as final varnish on an acrylic painting (when dry). I would not use a fixative as a final coat in cold wax medium and it is not really necessary since the cold wax seals all the delicate marks! You should check out my online painting course-“Powerful Design and personal color” at www.artandsuccess.com 😉😉

    So two questions
    #1- the color sticks that you used to write/draw on your painting are those pastel sticks or??
    #2-once you cover the painting with the wax do you let it dry or you paint right away?
    Thank you 😇

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi SV - both great questions. I use RF Pigment sticks - they are mostly oil paint with some beeswax incorporated. Sometimes I work into the wet paint and other times I let it dry first. :)

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Evi - I have spoken with the experts at Gamblin Colors and yes, they say you can use cwm with water soluble oil paints. I'm not sure about the ratios though, so here is their number - they are wonderful and knowledgeable: 503-235-1945 (Ask for Dave and tell him Pam sent you!)

      Pamela Caughey Art thanks so much. It will be a long-distance call 😆 I live in New Zealand. I’ve tried cold wax with the water-soluble oil paints about four days ago with 1:1 applications. Some of the paints dried off pretty well but some thicker application is still a bit tacky when touched. How long does a cold wax painting usually become dry? Do you need to let it dry in between layers? Sorry, I asked so many questions. This cold wax medium is new to me. You’ve opened a whole new world for me to explore. Thanking you 😊 🙏🏽

      @@homemades71 Oh wonderful! I taught a cold wax workshop in Takapuna in 2018 - I hope to return in 2020 to teach on the south island :) So you can email Dave Bernard at Gamblin Colors - here is his email address: dave@gamblincolors.com There are many factors that will impact how quickly a cwm/oil painting dries - what surface it is painted on, temperature, humidity, thickness of paint layers and whether you've added any additional mediums. I do go over all of this in my new online (self-paced) course in case you are interested :) I have some other New Zealanders in the course as well! Cheers - Pam

    Wow. Notice how your eyes move through/around the painting? and where your eyes rest/pause? Many say: the effective use of the "Elements of Composition" are especially important for an abstract, non-objective painting ... *IF* you want it to be aesthetically pleasing & engaging over time. Something to consider/ponder.
