  • Books are wonderful for creative inspiration. I turn to them when I’m curious about a topic and want to dive deep into research. Or when I want to study different styles of art and different perspectives. Or if I just want to look at beautiful pictures, savoring color and imagery.
Sometimes a few minutes paging through a book is enough to buck me out of a crabby mood or help me shake off a creative block.
Today I thought I’d share some of my current stack of library books.
Don't miss my accompanying blog post:

    The 10 books I mention:
A Victorian Flower Dictionary by Mandy Kirkby
Floriography: An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers by Jessica Roux
A Field Guide to Color: A Watercolor Workbook by Lisa Solomon
Color Mixing Bible by Ian Sidaway
Painting Portraits and Figures in Watercolor by Mary Whyte
The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection by Lynda Klich and Benjamin Weiss
Textile Landscape: Painting with Cloth and Mixed Media by Cas Holmes
Brave New Quilts: 12 Projects Inspired by 20th Century Art From Art Nouveau to Punk & Pop by Kathreen Ricketson
Abstract Painting: Concepts and Techniques by Vicky Perry
Abstract Painting: Fifty Years of Accomplishment from Kandinsky to the Present by Michel Seuphor

Enjoyed this video. I love libraries too, I used to work in The Central Library in Edinburgh, Scotland, it has a whole department dedicated to art - just wonderful. Special mention to your gorgeous snoring dog too, so cute ❤

Thank you, Fiona! There are so many of us library lovers and former librarians. I can only imagine how wonderful that art department must be. And thanks for your kind words about my studio companion.

That sounds wonderful, Linda! Is it a public library or part of a university? What a great resource and the perfect place to spend time discovering lots of inspiration!

@@AnneButera It is a very old library which actually houses the Calvin Coolidge museum. Probably most people don't remember silent Cal as being one of our presidents. Nevertheless, it may have an endowment or, if not, it's just a well supported library. It's in Northampton, Massachusetts. The area is called the five college area; Amherst, Smith, Mt Holyoke, Hampshire and UMass. We are the woke people that weirdos in Florida try to silence. 🤣

Wonderful companion to your blog post! I really enjoyed seeing inside the books to get a feeling for what they were all about! Love the first 2 books on flowers!

      Thank you, Karen!
A couple more language of flowers books came in at the library for me after I finished the post and video. I'm especially looking forward to digging in to The Heirloom Gardener by John Forti (with illustrations by Mary Azarian!) and The Illustrated Herbiary by Mata Toll (which came with a deck of cards!).

@Anne Butera How fun, thanks for the additional book mentions - enjoy! I also love Jonathan Drori's 2 "Around the World in 80..." books -- one is on plants and one is on trees!

@Anne Butera I looked at that online. Yes, amazing. I also see a book that I'd like to read by her called An Artist's Way of Seeing. Our library system carry it, unfortunately, but reading the sample pages made me want to read more.
