- In the Concerto for three harpsichords in D minor, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, Bach plays with monophony and polyphony. It is a solo concerto, but then for three harpsichords. Sometimes all the instruments play the same melody, but then they go off on their own again. And even when they follow their own path, there are still always lines played by two, three or four hands together. When the harpsichordists are actually all playing something different, their instruments still sound like one big combined instrument.

The Harpsichord is an instrument criminally underrated. It has such a dignified and befitting of royalty sound to it.
When I hear it, I think of the great Enlightenment philosophies that were beginning to make real headway in Europe around that time, as the world seemed to be waking to reaffirm the inherent dignity of all people.

This is an amazingly beautiful concert: reduction in number of instruments allows each voice to sound so clearly. Treating harpsichords true to their nature as chamber instruments makes such a beneficent difference!

@@charlesgauthier8287 Bach owned several harpsichords which he rented out. Most of the harpsichord concertos were arranged for concert performances by members of the Leipzig Collegium Musicum in the 1730s, when Bach was its director, The surviving performance parts date from that time. Bach and his two eldest sons could have performed this concerto. Bach also had several talented private students from the University who could have played.
@@charlesgauthier8287 The concerto for 4 harpsichords is actually a transcription of a concerto for 4 violins by Vivaldi - I guess he added 4 left hands? (but you possible know this) I have understood all the harpsichords concerti were written to be performed by Bach, his sons and his students - whom he considered friends at Café Zimmermann - where the then brand new fashion of coffee consumption was being spread.... Now I hope this is not some recently debunked myth :). But if it is true, then the way you presented is not that weird at all :).

Of the many, many things to love about this, I especially love the high shot that shows all there harpsichordists swooning and swaying together.
A friend turning me on to the harpsichord almost 40 years ago. I stop almost always whatever I am doing to just get lost in this wonderful instrument. To hear three playing together is just fantastic beyond words.

So great to hear Bach as it was conceived and intended, on period instruments, for the truest experience. Love that the strings are utilizing gut strings and baroque bows for a far less harsh, metallic sound, and soft, diminishing sweeps, so essential and to amazing effect, so as to not overpower the delicately intricate voices of the of the entwining harpsichords, the central voice of Mortensen’s with occasional rapturous splashes of cadenza. The strings reverently accompany throughout the complex weave of textures and flourishes. An absolute marvel.
I'm told that in Heaven, God refuses to listen to any music other than that of Bach.

This composition does not stop to reveal its amazing sides, just like a precious jewel sparks suddenly as you look at it from the different angles... The most remarkable modulations in the second part are just as the amazing awakening tool that keeps you on your toes, thanks to the most incredible game of the musical predictions that maestro J.S.Bach breaks in the most fun, entertaining and elegant way, by leading our lazy ear from the most expected to the most unique modulations. It feels as a dance with the most amazing partner, who knows when the old turns are due, but wants to entertain his partner and makes the dance more unique and surprising, instead of borryingly familiar. Incredibly fun dance this might be, indeed...
I must admit that the degree or the tonal relativity resembles the tonal explorations of composers in 20 century. And nothing can be more amazing about the prolific composer who could anticipate three centuries ahead of his time what might be happening in music in the future... Or, maybe from the more humble point, it may be us, who are yet to climb a little closer to the height of this all time unsurpassed genius, as we are still taking and learning from his generous feeding hand how to implement everything he had produced for centuries ahead of himself... Also, J.S.Bach’s amazing music does not stop surprising with more and more revelations into the depths of his musical genius. What a gratifying feature that makes comforting familiar music ever exciting and filled with the satisfying complexity for both intellectual and emotional needs. And for this reason, I truly appreciate still too rare emotionally engaging and spirited performance by these remarkably perceptive musicians. Thank you for bringing this lesser performed piece to the yearning for more J.S.Bach audiences. Bravi!
ces concertos pour plusieurs claviers, que j' écoutais souvent, du temps de ma découverte à 9 ans pour les 2 derniers mouvements de ce concerto bwv 1063 , et à 13/14 ans pour tous les autres mouvements, m' ont particulièrement subjugué et rempli d' émotion jusqu' à me faire pleurer , toujours d' ailleurs aux mêmes passages. Leur force émotionnelle est pour moi leur grand point fort, que malheureusement certains ne ressentent pas. je suis un admirateur inconditionnel de Bach et de la beauté de sa musique.

Pour info, son oeuvre pour piano que je crois préférer n' est pas la plus connue. ce sont les toccatas bwv 910/916 par Glenn Gould. . Je vénère cette oeuvre unique, où il n' y a pas un passage qui ne soit pas beau.

Bach never takes you where you would expect to be taken.
I first heard this over fifty years ago, and it bowls me over every time I hear it. Utter, thrilling excitement! Great rendition by these very talented musicians.
So glad to find this, all I can ever find is for pianos! Would love to see more of the keyboard fingers and less of the accompaniment bows.
The strings have melodic material much of the time. The variety of different lengths of detached notes makes for a particular delight in this performance. Harpsichord textures are also engaging. There cannot be too much of either keyboards or strings.

I love the harpsichord. It is far more interesting than piano for me. Amazing sound.
Not as versatile as the piano though. Rather more like a saxophone that sounds fantastic when played in the genre most suited to it, and not so good outside of that. Also both the harpsichord and saxophone and most other solo instruments becomes a bit tedious to the ears after a time, unlike the piano.
@@markgasparini6889 When it comes to the tediousness of the sound of the harpsichord, it is rather subjective. I personally prefer the harpsichord to the piano, but I like both instruments. The way I see it, is the harpsichord is like an experience, sudden and entire; whereas the piano tends to have the quality of a memory, therefore I will choose which instrument I want to listen to, depending on how I feel.

It has absolutely no dynamic, you cannot play as nuanced as with a piano.
@@tdb517 Perhaps not quite as nuanced, but it does have dynamics. The dynamics are that which you must create, without relying on pedals. You use careful placement of rubato and ornaments, trills, and other techniques. You make use of the two manuals, and some musicians will play with one hand on the top, and the other hand on the bottom manual. By doing this, one hand will have a different tone than the other. The upper manual tends to be slightly quieter, and has a more gentle sound, whereas the lower manual tends to be brighter, and have more power. Many musicians will couple the manuals, which makes it so when a key on the lower manual is pressed, it pressed the same key on the higher manual. You can have dynamics and nuance with a harpsichord, but you must be creative. It is an instrument that is very good at weeding out the unskilled from the skilled.
Classical pieces hit different when played on the instrument they were written on.

So lovely to see all the musicians gathered together in a small group. After months of listening to "all of Bach" they look like old friends.
MY kind of music! Wow- a 5-string double bass. Haven’t seen one of those before in a symphony group before.
I don't think low strings were standardized yet. Cellos could have 4-6 strings. There was a slightly bigger cello in France called the basse de violon, tuned a step lower than a 4-string cello. The bass viola da gamba was still used for continuo and it had a solo repertoire, Double basses had 3 or 4 strings and a different tuning in Vienna... I'm not sure where or how commonly 5-strings were employed.

Jose’s Garage That’s where my love for Bach started. One of the first recordings I heard was a performance of James Last (can you believe it) of the slow part of the double violin concerto. Then I discovered Leonhardt and Ton Koopman. Also the Weihnachtsoratorium for which we had to cycle 10 km through a cold winter. The church had real candles. I loved it. Enjoy the journey.

This is just gorgeous.
The harpsichords are amazing of course. Played wonderfully. But when ever I see baroque music played on historical instruments like this I can never take my eyes off the strings. The bowing in particular is so different to modern bow techniques, it’s almost like they gently caress the strings with the bow, even in more vigorous passages. And the bow strokes are always so delicate and precise. Seeing a five string double bass of that era played like this is honestly like stepping back in time.
After diving into the historical performance world, modern string playing strikes me as almost violent.
@@taylordiclemente5163 I think it's because of the development of recording technology, artists around the time of the second world war played very vigorously, this is what is now known as "old school" now violinists are getting mellower again I think because microphone technology has improved a lot.
@@elneutrino90 That makes sense. Also "historical" and modern players are talking to each other and influencing each other. Modern players are reading historical violin treatises and are becoming more sensitive to historical aesthetics, dather than playing everything the same way. There isn't as much of a hard ideological line between approaches as there was in the '80s. The stupid A=415/440Hz disparity still exists though.
Taylor DiClemente the dispute regarding modern pitch A440 (and sharper) is relative to the human voice and how instruments and bodies vibrate.
Until you understand vocal technique you will not understand the difference.
With the advent of the Machine Age and Machine Technology everything has adjusted to higher louder brighter.
Music is about soft and loud, gentle and aggressive.
Natural pitch is a different medium.
Slowly people are realising how to bring both styles together.
People still ride horse and sail boats.
It's actually a bass viol. 5 strings & frets.
These three harpsichord sets are unreal, I love it.

Except the period instruments strings would most likely have been made of animal guts.
@@thedoghouse4203 harpsichords used wire, as did bandoras, chitarras battente in Italy, and harps in Ireland. Guts all around, otherwise. Overspun gut bass strings came on the scene in the 1680s, if we can believe Thomas Mace.

90's kid here. This is the greatest performance of this set. The harpsichord is awesome. And three makes this even sicker! The camera angles, fail! There should be a camera on each side of the trio and one above. Next time we need angles! The guy in the middle is jammin!

Good heavens! I have several recordings of this piece, on both modern and original instruments. But this version, with the diminished orchestral numbers, produces a completely different concerto, with marvelous interplay of the musical lines. The recording technique also complements the players.

I am so thankful for this performance. I had largely ignored this wonderful piece, what with all the egregious piano versions out there, but now I listen attentively and even follow along with a mini score that I bought. Especially challenging Cembalo 1, that must have been Sebastian’s part!
