I don’t do magic. Just an engineer watching this random video thinking critically. The fourth row of dominos fell much faster, that makes me think those blocks don’t have a bottom. So if there are holes dug underneath for somebody to go paint the numbers, there’s plenty of time to climb in, paint, and climb out. Simple like that. Also, video never revealed what the ground looks like under “404”.
I would say it was quite close to that. He could have had like a 'move-the-squares' puzzle like arrangement on each of the dominos. He could then remotely control them spell out any set number, along with the other necessary words. He would have every single number that Penn&Teller could guess on the remote. Doable.
I can't understand how is this a trick. This becomes a trick only if I assume Jandro didn't open the envelope. I don't believe Jandro didn't open the envelope beforehand and why should they send him the envelope, they could have given it to P & T only.

I think Penn was frustrated with Shawn the way he was frustrated with Kostya. He knew what both of them were going to do, but they are so good, he just couldn't follow them. With Jandro, he's just spectating and enjoying the performance, cause he knows he has no chance. 😂
If you go frame by frame around the 3:02 mark, you can see the tops of the 4s already painted on the 8th and 9th dominos in the second to last row, and they line up with where the numbers are after the dominos fell. This shot is before he opens the envelope so he had to have known what the number was beforehand. Like Penn said there are countless ways he could have read it (reading it through the envelope with a light, carefully slicing the edge and hiding it later, etc). There's no screen, no people going to change it after, and no crazy contraption to change it. The numbers are on there from the very beginning. I really like Jandro's tricks and he is very entertaining, but this just shows why the "videos only" season is missing that magic feel. This feels really cheap compared to the incredible tricks that happen on stage and producers likely only allowed it because there's not much you can do in a video-only trick.
It's possible this was filmed afterwards though. Because he only has two cameras (drone and cameraman) and this is a third view so must have been filmed out of sequence
My guess is his assistant looked. He only said "I didn't open the envelope". If the envelope was gimmicked with a slot, someone from P&T would've noticed. The color would be easy to gimmick so you could see the black ink through it in a certain light. That's my guess. I'm not a magician or an expert. And I do recognize most tricks require so much skill. I'm not sure if this was one of them. I also think sometimes it's in P&Ts beat interest to be "fooled". I think they end up working for or opening for P&T. They benefit financially if there is more hype around an act. It's a conflict of interest but I have seen them claim to be fooled with something you would expect them to understand.
There is always a behind-the-scenes magician to whom the method of the trick is revealed to (Michael Close in this case). Among other things, he's responsible for either busting out the magician when they lie, or to determine whether Penn's code words got misinterpreted by the guest. So no, Jandro did not open the envelope.
I would assume the show would do something against such a blatant and lame possibility. Like instead of mailing the letter, they send out a production assistant, who carries the letter and makes sure there are no shenanigans there or during filming.
Most tricks I know how they are done, even if I didn't/couldn't see it. This one though, the only thing I could guess would be something like an etch-a-sketch, but voice activated instead of the buttons. It's either that or he lied about the envelope, which I agree with Penn and don't think he did.

They want to be fooled. Kind of the point. They know so much about illusion and slight of hand etc, it’s probably kind of boring for them when they watch magic acts. If they are fooled? They know so much and if they don’t know? I bet it gives them some glee. They want to know how and they couldn’t figure it out. Maybe 10 minutes later they think “Oooowh” But on the spot? It’s cool to see them made humble and be funny about it.
If it's entire new creative trick, they'll be happy to get fooled. But if it's something familiar to them and get fooled 3 times, it's frustration. The feeling of you lose because of the last straw

What hit me right from the intro was your creativity. Apparently, Allison also had that realization. I will start exercising that muscle. Thanks so much for the advice 😊
He must have been able to change 124 and 404 on the fly. The envelope was mis-direction... he could have had the number guessed live. I can't think of how he did it because he says "no tech", Penn says that the tricks are "fool proof" (so it would work with any number), and Jandro doesn't even run past the blocks he'd need to change to give him an opportunity to change something. That said, there are some odd things that might lead to the answer: 1) When all the blocks are down at the end of the trick they look like cardboard... that could blow over in the wind easily, and if they had weight at the bottom, they wouldn't topple easily. 2) the video of the blocks falling is sped up! The camera man seems to be running impossibly fast. The speed of them falling also makes them appear heavier than they are 3) Why use the car to push them over? Being cardboard and light weight it risks falling the wrong way when hitting it from the bottom 4) The camera is careful to NEVER show us the numbered blocks from the ground camera. Only from the drone camera. And when the ground camera man runs close to the numbered blocks, his feed cuts to penn and teller. 5) Combining all of these... why do we need to think the blocks are heavy? Maybe them being light weight leads to how the trick is done?
I like how the audience suddenly becomes 10x more active in gestures and laughing, when they are behind a camera, instead of actually in the audience. curious.

Well, they had to put that block there, because if they wrote down 1000, it would be kind of stupid to just have the possibility of 1-999 right? But, since it wasnt 1000, it would look silly with an empty block as well.
After watching all four performances, I think that you, sir, are the among the best magicians alive. I can usual figure out things, but, especially with the first two, I have no clue how you did that. Bravo!

I have a sneaking suspicious that this trick was made possibly by way of technology. But.....I also suspect, as is usually the case, that whenever you think you know how a magician did something, you're probably wrong.
You make a good point. But obviously it's not real magic. For a good illusion to work, there must always be a setup of some kind. Although I do think they were right about hiding people in four of the blocks. If you go back and watch again, from the areal view, after he calls out the number on the paper, it does look like there is odd movement in some of the blocks. I noticed it right away, but didn't even think about people being in there. In fact I wouldn't have thought of that all, if Penn had not mentioned it. It was only then that it clicked in my head. It was slight movement, but if you watch in high quality, it's noticeable.

@@roderickgrech9928 I'm not entirely sure how P&T are supposed to have had the number forced out of them, particularly off camera. If there were any question regarding the selection of the number, I reckon P&T would have been on it pretty hard in their decision. For what it's worth, I believe the height of the drone means we can't see tiny differences in the contrast of the characters. There is unusual spacing around characters suggesting that the blocks could indeed display any number provided at the start. I would have wanted to take a very close look at the blocks displaying the chosen number, as well as the cart he was driving, for e-ink and radio comms gear.

If you framestep when they're looking down the rows of blocks, you can juuuuust see what looks like the tips of the 4's poking out. So don't think it was any kind of dynamic trick like using E-paper displays to make the blocks change. If he didn't read through the envelope, then the easiest explanation is that an accomplice sent the number
The fact that he had the envelope sent back to him leads me to believe he just opened the envelope and looked inside. Otherwise he could have had Penn and Teller just keep the number or choose one during the taping.
Look at the envelope at the beginning. You'll see how it's sealed with a big white sticker and there are two signatures across it's edges? If those signatures don't line up perfectly, it's evidence of tampering. There was none. Jandro didn't look in the envelope before hand.
And please don't forget, the producers know how the trick works beforehand and Jandro promised, that he did not get the info from the envelope. The producers would have called the whole thing off, if Jandro lied.

@Sathish Yadav simple. 4 screens that show pictures of the 4 numbers. All he needed to do was to click a number on some device.

I can't think of how he did it because he says "no tech", Penn says that the tricks are "fool proof" (so it would work with any number), and Jandro doesn't even run past the blocks he'd need to change to give him an opportunity to change something.
That said, there are some odd things that might lead to the answer:
1) When all the blocks are down at the end of the trick they look like cardboard... that could blow over in the wind easily, and if they had weight at the bottom, they wouldn't topple easily.
2) the video of the blocks falling is sped up! The camera man seems to be running impossibly fast. The speed of them falling also makes them appear heavier than they are
3) Why use the car to push them over? Being cardboard and light weight it risks falling the wrong way when hitting it from the bottom
4) The camera is careful to NEVER show us the numbered blocks from the ground camera. Only from the drone camera. And when the ground camera man runs close to the numbered blocks, his feed cuts to penn and teller.
5) Combining all of these... why do we need to think the blocks are heavy? Maybe them being light weight leads to how the trick is done?

I like how the audience suddenly becomes 10x more active in gestures and laughing, when they are behind a camera, instead of actually in the audience. curious.
Likely they dampen their excitement when live to not add too much to the atmosphere, which goes out the window when they are alone.
The biggest illusion here is the audience and especially their sound :P
This by far the best audience replacement.

But, since it wasnt 1000, it would look silly with an empty block as well.

I have a sneaking suspicious that this trick was made possibly by way of technology. But.....I also suspect, as is usually the case, that whenever you think you know how a magician did something, you're probably wrong.

The video was recorded. He needed to know the number at the time to do "the magic trick" (whatever it is) and succeed.
You make a good point. But obviously it's not real magic. For a good illusion to work, there must always be a setup of some kind. Although I do think they were right about hiding people in four of the blocks. If you go back and watch again, from the areal view, after he calls out the number on the paper, it does look like there is odd movement in some of the blocks. I noticed it right away, but didn't even think about people being in there. In fact I wouldn't have thought of that all, if Penn had not mentioned it. It was only then that it clicked in my head. It was slight movement, but if you watch in high quality, it's noticeable.
Wild guess because of when it was shot, lockdown and special permit required to be outside messed with sitting schedules because timezones

I think it would have been better if you made them tell you the number live. Then I would have been amazed.
Don't think it'd matter, the number was pre-supplied so the routine could be filmed in one go on a good day of weather for the camera shot.
@@relwalretep it would have mattered...as that would eliminate the possibility of writing on the block before pen and teller come up with the number
@@roderickgrech9928 I'm not entirely sure how P&T are supposed to have had the number forced out of them, particularly off camera. If there were any question regarding the selection of the number, I reckon P&T would have been on it pretty hard in their decision.
For what it's worth, I believe the height of the drone means we can't see tiny differences in the contrast of the characters. There is unusual spacing around characters suggesting that the blocks could indeed display any number provided at the start. I would have wanted to take a very close look at the blocks displaying the chosen number, as well as the cart he was driving, for e-ink and radio comms gear.
well, 404 was already on the blocks. Live would not work.
Timezone differences might prevent that.

If you framestep when they're looking down the rows of blocks, you can juuuuust see what looks like the tips of the 4's poking out. So don't think it was any kind of dynamic trick like using E-paper displays to make the blocks change. If he didn't read through the envelope, then the easiest explanation is that an accomplice sent the number

Thinking outside the box is clearly a way of life with Jandro, this is another super trick and bravo!
The fact that he had the envelope sent back to him leads me to believe he just opened the envelope and looked inside. Otherwise he could have had Penn and Teller just keep the number or choose one during the taping.
Look at the envelope at the beginning. You'll see how it's sealed with a big white sticker and there are two signatures across it's edges? If those signatures don't line up perfectly, it's evidence of tampering. There was none. Jandro didn't look in the envelope before hand.
And please don't forget, the producers know how the trick works beforehand and Jandro promised, that he did not get the info from the envelope. The producers would have called the whole thing off, if Jandro lied.
That's no fun, and too easy, he wouldn't do it. That's the first thing any idiot would think of.
