Which is exactly what John Betjeman predicted in his documentary made during the dying days of the Sommerset and Dorset Railway, one of the many victims of the Marples/Beeching closures.
Provided the trains run at times when you need to travel. Sandsend, whose station was closed before Beeching joined the BTC, had 4 trains oer days in both directions whilst the bus ran every 30 minutes. Making it little wonder people didn't go by train.
@grandaddyoe1434 rrue enough, but first, the railway had to ger rid of their responsibility as a common carrier and do as Beeching wanted and focus on bulk long distance freight. But even after Beeching, they thought that they could still run wagon load freight services serving a myriad of individual customers. The other thing they needed to deal with was the growth of car ownership. But with thousands of men and women capable of driving after WW2 BR had no chance.
No lack on planning and investment drive people into their car !! Rail and Tube Travel into to thru and around it burgeoning because Rail is relevant plus Park and rides etc. Only a Lunatic would drive into London if they didn't need to..
So sad to see these stations close ...we will regret them as roads fill with more and more cars..
Far too many of them duplicated other lines whilst others didn't even make money in the days before WW1.

@@Downsman517now with the Khan /Starmer agenda to do away with cars the old stations will be sorely missed
Cannot keep up with all of todays changes. Take me back! ❤ UK.
Great Video, Thank you for sharing.
Railways are the way forward
Shouldn't that be a rebuilt Wolverhampton High Level in connection with the WCML electrification?
Nice to see some of these clips again.
If only Tilbury Riverside railway station was still around today and the shuttle ferry to Gravesend.
Brilliant video what's the name of the music
So sad. When will you realize that trains are better than cars? When you're stuck in traffic?

@@neiloflongbeck5705 Poor decisions by poor quality railway management back in those days. It wasn't only equipment which needed modernisation . . .
