  • Here I am taking you on a ride on the suspension railway in Wuppertal Germany Schwebebahn. The suspension railway in Wuppertal(Germany) is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world and is a unique system. The Wuppertal Suspension Railway (called Schwebebahn in German) nowadays carries up to 82,000 passengers a day through the city.
Designed by Eugen Langen to sell to the city of Berlin the installation of the suspension railway with elevated stations was built in Wuppertal Barmen, Elberfeld and Vohwinkel between 1897 and 1903; the first track opened in 1901. The suspension railway(Schwebebahn) is still in use today as a normal means of local public transport, moving 25 million passengers annually as of 2008.
The suspension railway runs along a route of 13.3 kilometres (8.3 mi), at a height of about 12 metres (39 ft) above the river Wupper between Wuppertal Oberbarmen and Sonnborner Street (10 kilometres or 6.2 miles) and about 8 metres (26 ft) above the valley road between Sonnborner Street and Wuppertal Vohwinkel (3.3 kilometres or 2.1 miles). At one point the suspension railway crosses the A46 motorway. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes. The Wuppertal suspension railway operates within the VRR transport association and accepts tickets issued by VRR companies.
Due to an accident in November 2018, the suspension railway was closed down for nearly nine months. It re-opened on 1 August 2019.
Feel free to give me feedback for this suspension railway ride in Wuppertal Germany on a cloudy winter day and please like and consider subscribing to my channel if you enjoy my work.

The Schwebebahn is the only good thing in Wuppertal. Its so sad to see what happen there. Once one of the richest and most developed places, but now so bad I had to move out there. It hurts to see it all fall apart

Thanks so much again! :) I also really like it. Alone the view above the street or the river is absolutely amazing! Wish I could show you the older version I took 10yrs ago or so, which was shaking quite a bit more 😂

I had taken a few rides in this train, the older version during the 90's. It's wonderful to watch this system again thru your video. Thanks!

Me too, it was the first time riding the newer version. Before I only had a ride with the 90s version. I think this one is way less shaky and quieter! :) thank you again!!

@@JapanPotato if you come to visit Wuppertal, don't forget to visit the "hardt botanical garden" it is a beautiful park on top of the city and you can watch all over the city, the view is magical. Also, if you have a bike go and see the nordbahntrasse, it's a old train way that was turned into a long bike lane through the city, it even has a long tunnel, which you can drive through with your bike, where the trains went before.

@@JapanPotato In over 120 years of operation, there has only been one accident in which a train crashed and resulted in fatalities. That was on April 12, 1999. After construction work, a clamp was forgotten on the rail, and the first train that ran that day was levered off the track by this clamp. The scene of the accident can be seen at 15:09 where the train crashed onto the pipe bridge.
