With the warmest greetings from my hometown Wuppertal. Our city has very ugly corners, but also again very beautiful ones and the beautiful corners are really worth seeing, just like the surrounding area of Wuppertal. I wish you all a good transition into 2022 and stay healthy.
Last time I did the Schwebebahn I managed to do a round trip and took in the trolleybus system in Solingen as well. They run in hybrid mode from the nearby Vohwinkel mainline station, and the trolley wires start not long after passing underneath the railway bridge. In the centre of Solingen we transferred to the S7 train and went over the Müngstener Brücke and ended up at Oberbarmen! Glad you had a fun time, and thanks for a great video! 👍
I can add a +1 for the hugely tall Müngsten bridge. It's worth stopping off at Solingen-Schaberg and walking down to see the bridge from below (2 nice cafes beside the river too!)
Before the tram system was decommissioned in Wuppertal in 1987, my parents took me one a round trip through Wuppertal using all five public transport systems: bus, trolley bus, tram, schwebebahn, and local train. The schwebebahn is quite clearly the coolest of them all.
Great review of an unique and incredible means of transit! As a disabled individual, I really appreciate your attention to accessible features! Fortunately the world is waking up to those of us in wheel chairs and needing walkers.😊
It's funny that TH-cam is suggesting this video to me now as I and my roommates are driving to Wuppertal this weekend for the sole reason of experiencing Schwebebahn for the first time. We're so excited for that. Love your videos and keep up the good work :)
A few things to mention: The Schwebebahn is uniquely perfect in Wuppertal as Wuppertal is a very long and narrow city due to the hefty mountains on each side of the valley. (That is also why you see a lot of busses, as the hills were too steep for most other modes of transport, so if you want to go up you have to take a bus.) Also, while the Schwebebahn is unique for visitors for people living in Wuppertal it is just a normal mode of transportation, a very fast and smooth one, because the traffic in the narrow valley by car is bad and flying over it you don't have to care about stops, crosses and traffic. So even if you have a car, if you want to get anywhere alongside the Schwebebahn it is usually faster than going by car.
We did the Schwebebahn 2 days ago and agree entirely, it is a bucket list journey that train fans need to do! So much fun and a great way to get to know the city. Thank you for the inspiration 😁
Min. 1:24 - I'm sorry, but Wuppertal used to have a tram system until the eighties. But as everywhere, the car traffic rose and the tram had to disappear.
@@NonstopEurotripFirst there was the tram, 17 years before the suspension railway. For around 100 years. Then the tram was dismantled because the number of cars became too large and space was needed for 4-lane roads.
Hello and thank you very much for this nice video and your promoting of the "Schwebebahn ". We people from Wuppertal really appreciate your content. Best wishes and a happy new year.
Thank you very much for this nice video about our Schwebebahn. It is the first touristic video I've seen with the new implemented train generation. We are very proud of this suspension railway indeed and it is very appreciated that visitors like it too. Greetings from Wuppertal.

Thank you very much for your wonderful experience to show such gorgeous panoramic view of the city of Wuppertal. I've just heard about such kind means of transportation. You have really made a great surprise for me. Studying German at the University I have never been to Germany. Your video is really great and cool. I give a lot of thanks for such kind of possibility you offered me to show with my own eyes what's going around. Germany is a wonderful country. German engineering products are famous around the globe: German engineering companies, transportation systems, their eco-friendly technical solution to solve environment pollution problems - all these deserves best attention. German cars, trains, furniture, housekeeping facilities - everything what makes our life more comfortable, - it's great genius of outstanding German engineers. The Wuppertal Schwebebahn - is a unique ongoing transportation system which gives us wonderful possibility to solve many environmental problems, made architectural design of the city more precious (precise und knapp) due to complicated geological peculiarities of the city and certainly makes life of the citizens more comfortable and convenient. The Schwebebahn in Wuppertal could solve many transportation problems in the megacities, metropolitan areas and suburban regions of the cities in the rush hour during the migration of people from bed to work when many people should stay in cars for a long period of time. Adore this video, adore your titanic work. Great video, good job, nice trains, beautiful city. Give you my big "like". Thank you, bye.
Very enjoyable video ……and a real eye opener! I was staying in Düsseldorf only a matter of weeks ago, and would have made time in my schedule to visit & ride the Wuppertal Schwebal had I known about it. Now placed firmly on my list for when I next visit! Thanks again for the video!!

I rode the Schwebebahn in 2018 when they had a mixed fleet of the last generation and current generation trains running together. I was lucky to ride both types! It was the most unique train I've ever been on. I'm glad you got to experience it, too!
@@NonstopEurotrip They weren't very comfortable, and they swayed quite dreadfully in a sick-making sort of way! All the same, I'm glad I got to go on them. But the new trains, while too uniform (and none of them have ads on the bottom the way the older ones did), are much more comfortable.
Excellent presentation. I am fascinated by this line. Never rode it but saw it running parallel to our Intercity train from Hamm to Koln. Thanks for posting such a nice video.
Thank you very much for that detailed amd valid information about the Schwebebahn. Thanks for the video, but for future visitors, a little suggestion would be that.. the best time to travel with Schwuppie is Autumn because you can see all the beautiful colorful shades of the Mother Nature..
Great video as always and today's Video was fantastic, in my opinion. And indeed they made perfect decision building it above the river not only, there was proper utilization of land but also it looks amazing. And I knew about this transit system for quite a while and that time, I was surprised to see that this magnificent structure was able to survive both the World Wars and aerial bombing too. Moreover, I had watched the video of this suspension train on TH-cam I think 6 months ago and it was amazing to watch since it was filmed when they started this new line. And as far as I remember there is one such transit system in Japan too, so you could try that too mate. 😊
During the first World War Germany didn't really experience any damage, but during the second World War Wuppertal was heavily bombed, and the Schwebebahn heavily damaged, being completely destroyed in some areas. However it was so essential that it was rebuilt and back in service by 1946.
@@mikeblatzheim2797 oh, I see thank you very much for the information, I wasn't awared that lines were heavily damaged, I knew that the city was raided.
It’s a kind of reminder of what we could have had a very long time ago, in Scotland. Cool video! There are two more Schwebebahns in NRW. Düsseldorf airport and Dortmund university. Most Germans do not know that the Schwebebahn is something very unique. I will watch your other videos, too. Thank you.
Lucky you being able to ride this train. When two years ago just a few days after me booking a trip and hotel there, there was an accident there, and the entire line was out of order for months on end. So the only thing I could do was walk alongside the suspended railway and look at a few of the train-stations, but no train-ride.

Thanks for sharing this iconic experience from end to end. I hope to do it one day. I believe they used to have a special set of cars that did an afternoon tea run but maybe those days have gone? It reminds me a little of the Shonan monorail in Japan - it is also a supended railway that traverses both urban streets and forested hills.

Yep Wuppertal does have a hanged metro system. It isn't very long but rather unique. It does swing a little bit but not enough to discourage the users. You do get a good view looking down though. I used to drive to ski in the Alps from UK and would do 650 mile in the forward journey in one day as the ferry docked Amsterdam early in the morning. For the return journey I had to do it in two days so picking a German city for overnight stay along the River Rhine route close to Holland was a feature of my skiing trips. In one year it was Wuppertal and it was really a pleasant surprise to see this upside down railway in action. I believe China is also offering this arrangement in its metro trains line up. Japan is another country that has it too.
Iam learning German. Your videos are helpful to me because i get to learn German places. Its because of your video that i got to know that Vienna is called Wien in German. Keep travelling to Germany Austria so i can see more German places. Travel also on S Bahn and U bahn in Germany👍👍👍
This may have been mentioned already, but Walt and Lillian Disney in a tour of Europe rode the Schwebebahn. It started to give Walt the idea to include it in this yet to be built Disneyland Park. Lillian didn't like the swinging motion of the Schwebebahn, hence its name, which let Walt to investigate further and ultimately contract with Alweg, also a German firm, to build the first monorail operating in the western hemisphere. Note that the Alweg monorail rode on top of the rail instead of hanging underneath it.
I do love the Schwebebahn! We have been twice now. Our second trip was in 2019, shortly after it had reopened following a rather nasty incident where some of the rails fell off, or something - it was closed for nearly a year for reparations. Anyway, by then all the trains looked exactly the same, whereas on our first visit, in May 2018, there were all sorts of different trains on the line, some much older than others.
the newly constructed wheels damaged the track; and some other difficulties happened; it was well developed over the last 120 years. But new generations of engineers thought they knew everything about our Schwebebahn. And the managers who were responsible for wrong decisions are now in other jobs and one of the head management is now a politician...
Parts of the monorail follows the mainline which is Wuppertal Hagen Witten Dortmund Railway the Rhein-Ruhr Osten route one point you actually go under the Wuppertal Düsseldorf railway
@@NonstopEurotrip maybe try it the announcement is different from this one because it's using Ingo Ruff DB BR422 DB BR1440 S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr S8. If I had to guess who does the announcement it's Helga Bayertz like S-Bahn München DB BR423
Wouldn't the Schwebebahn concept lend itself perfectly for autonomous trains? More grade separation is hardly possible. Does anyone know if this was ever considered?
The original "Kaiserwagen" train from 1901 can be booked for group excursions or by individual tourists for a ride of the whole system. Did this in 2017 with my father and brother. A guide, in period costume, talked about the history of the system while we were enjoying the scenery and enjoying our coffee with cake. It is called the Kaiserwagen, because it was used for the inaugural ride with the emperor Wilhelm II in 1901.
A fabulous trip. Seen a few videos on this. Tim Traveller's is very good. You can sense your excitement on getting to ride on the Schwebebahn. Cracking shots from the rear window too.
Actually the new trains have technical difficulties as it‘s far from a mass product with such a unique system of 31 trains. They‘re still allowed to go by 40 km/h as a train had hit the track in a curve due to the higher propulsion the new traction provides. Also the ETCS had lots of trouble when it went online. Now recently the wheels had too much wear seemingly due to an inbalance that is caused by the construction relying on passenger traffic to be balanced, so with lower passenger numbers early 2020 might have caused this. They had to stop the service for a year only allowing weekend service in that period… Hope they‘ll find solutions for these issues soon. Otherwise these new trains are really nice and fresh looking compared to the old ones which had the look from the 70s.

Hahaha, isn't that the emirates air line? LOL
Yes more please :)
I have some more planned 😁
Greetings from Wuppertal- if I look out of my window, I can see a small part of the "Schwebebahn"...
Hello my neighbor ;)
Must be cool 😎
Would love to see more public transit videos really enjoying them
Ah excellent, I've got a few more up my sleeve 😃
This may have been mentioned already, but Walt and Lillian Disney in a tour of Europe rode the Schwebebahn. It started to give Walt the idea to include it in this yet to be built Disneyland Park. Lillian didn't like the swinging motion of the Schwebebahn, hence its name, which let Walt to investigate further and ultimately contract with Alweg, also a German firm, to build the first monorail operating in the western hemisphere. Note that the Alweg monorail rode on top of the rail instead of hanging underneath it.
I didn't know that, very interesting William, thanks 😊👍🏻
Always want to see a quirky video!
Absolutely Paul 🚟🤗
I do love the Schwebebahn! We have been twice now. Our second trip was in 2019, shortly after it had reopened following a rather nasty incident where some of the rails fell off, or something - it was closed for nearly a year for reparations. Anyway, by then all the trains looked exactly the same, whereas on our first visit, in May 2018, there were all sorts of different trains on the line, some much older than others.
Such a special experience 😃🚟🇩🇪
the newly constructed wheels damaged the track; and some other difficulties happened; it was well developed over the last 120 years. But new generations of engineers thought they knew everything about our Schwebebahn. And the managers who were responsible for wrong decisions are now in other jobs and one of the head management is now a politician...
is the Schwebebahn also for stoller? just a question? also! it looks cool!!!!!!!!
Yes! 👌🏻
This is certainly a most unique and unusual means of transportation.
It sure is!! 😊
I would love to go on this train.
It's exciting Cheryl 😀
I WENT ON THAT TRAIN IN 1990, WHEN THE WALL CAME DOWN!!!!!!
Not this one...
Great video
Thanks Luis! ☺️
What do they use to maintain the ’trackwork’?
Might there be a video worth doing on that?
I honestly don't know 😂
Video's score: 10.5 out of 10
Oh wow thank you Pedro 😁
Parts of the monorail follows the mainline which is Wuppertal Hagen Witten Dortmund Railway the Rhein-Ruhr Osten route one point you actually go under the Wuppertal Düsseldorf railway
🚟🇩🇪😃
@@NonstopEurotrip maybe try it the announcement is different from this one because it's using Ingo Ruff DB BR422 DB BR1440 S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr S8. If I had to guess who does the announcement it's Helga Bayertz like S-Bahn München DB BR423
Greetings from Wuppertal 😜
Greetings 😁
Wouldn't the Schwebebahn concept lend itself perfectly for autonomous trains? More grade separation is hardly possible. Does anyone know if this was ever considered?
I think it's just 'too different!' 😥
That's the way the "People Mover" at Düsseldorf Airport works - it's also a train hanging from rails and travels autonomously.
W-upper valley! It’s the name we call it. I’m from Wuppertal
Excellent 👍🏻
Thank God that baby elephant was o.k.,though !! They shouldn't had done that ! No animals should be used in circuses !! Thank you for the info .!! 😅
Absolutely 🐘😂
Does it actually work as a transit for locals or is it mainly tourist atraction?
It's an integral part of the transport network of the city!
@@johansilwouden3403 sounds fun!
@@johansilwouden3403 it's temporary out of order due to a system change. Everything is modernized. New Rails, new trains...

amazing!
I know right 😁
Great video 👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
A good ride!
Absolutely 🚟🇩🇪
A fabulous trip. Seen a few videos on this. Tim Traveller's is very good. You can sense your excitement on getting to ride on the Schwebebahn. Cracking shots from the rear window too.
I was very excited Mark, long before I saw TT's video 😄
nice video!! keep up
Thanks 👍🏻😊
Absolutely yes. It's a great system ☺️
