Corvus Belli seems to be making a major marketing push recently. I've seen 4 sponsored videos from mini wargaming hobby creators I regularly watch this week.
Honestly, I’m glad they did this. I didn’t know about them until like two weeks ago, and now I have two really cool-looking models coming in the mail. I do love Jimmy Workshop’s minis, but it’s nice to see an entirely different aesthetic.
Seems like they are going for a market-push. They released their trailer for the animation-series a couple of days ago, and it looks good. I hope they find success, we need more player in the miniature WG market. And they earned it.
I'm on board with it as far as ads/sponsorships go. They fit well with the normal content of the creators I've seen, and I'm going to spend way more time looking at their models in an educational video than I'm going to spend watching a review or unboxing. And each creator did a different video topic so it doesn't get repetitive to see them all in a short period - unboxing showcase/review videos are pretty much one and done for a model line which is rough for everyone who isn't the first to post.
You know what they say: A sci fi mini isn''t complete without some classic bisexual lighting! Awesome rundown on an elusive technique Dana! I think this sort of ground level approach to NMM is much needed.
NMM has always been something I've struggled with, and watching "recipes" hasn't really made it easier for me. But I think I ended up slightly wiser after this video. Yeah, everyone mentions that you're painting the light as it reflects from its source, but having it visualised like this in black and white was much better at driving it home for me. And starting from (and completing) the mid-tones wasn't something I had grokked previously. Thanks, Dana, I feel like I actually learned something today.
Oddly enough I finally got over my hangup about painting in a NMM style by using TMM paints. Having a shiny paint helped me figure out reflections and using something like Vallejo Xpress Paints which are pretty matte let me add easy shadows.
I love getting excited for new games/minis. I never would have thought I'd be moving to metal models for the first time after 6 years of resin. Great vid, as always Dana!
I think this is the first video that really made NMM click for me. Thanks for the awesome video Dana! Also, always happy to see you indulge in some synthwave goodness!
Thanks, Dana! This is the third time you unlocked a complicated painting concept for me with a single well-placed explanation. I never understood what the rule is behind the order of shadows and highlights on a metallic surface, but now I do, thanks to your insight about angles. The waterfall analogy is also great! I’ll save this video next to your ones about glazes and CMYK color theory.
Really liked hearing your thought process on how light falls on the surfaces along with the diagrams. OSL glaze afterward was an excellent effect I want to try to use now too. The infinity bikes all look super cool but are a bit intimidating, so this was great inspiration!
Corvus Belli really must have had a lot of JSA boxes laying around. I'm glad everyone is showcasing them, but every vid has been JSA (not that I complain since it's a faction I like).
CB needs to come up with a deal with Squarespace so you can still do a Squarespace ad read. I'm like: Did I even just watch a Dana Howl video? Also, great work on the NMM and I realize appreciate you demystifying it for people.
I tried and tried with nnm. My results were average at best, so I used tmm. I found that worked for me better. I think my problem is what colours to use where.
I really like the look of the finished model 😀 The driver could have used some more color for my taste, but I understand that this was not the focus of the video. How was working with the metal model?
There is a guy on the 'eavier metal fb page did a nmm break down and he starts with the lead Belcher primer to take his reference photos. Am interesting alternative
Really liked this video. It makes NMM approachable. On the other hand, I still find NMM artificial looking... to me it's a "painterly" technique for static dioramas; as soon as you move and pose your mini, real life interplay of lights clashes with the artificial highlights of NMM; it ends up looking cartoony to me. But this is a commentary on the technique, not on this video which is cool!
Only the edges facing the brightest light source should be painted with the highest value, though. Edges facing the ground are slightly higher in value due to the light bouncing from the ground, but not. close to the brightest value.
I really hope the popularity explosion of Infinity doesn't get ruined by bullshit politicking by assholes trying to muscle in 😥 Legit can't do GW anymore and i've loved if since Rogue Trader...That's a lot of love right in the bin right there.
Yas Queen, preach, to the whole concept of your video. I'm only 00:32 but I'm already cheering. NMM isn't crazy hard, it isn't crazy time consuming. It doesn't need to be flawless. Metallic paint + a dark wash is not a flawless replicate of actual metal either and people are still happy with it. Sorry, imma let you finish, but Beyonce had the best album of all time, of all time.
Love your work lady, but this is probably one of the most raggety paint jobs I have ever seen you do. The edges are all pretty choppy and not smooth at all where it transitions from one color to the next. You have done much better work than this one for sure. Good practice job though.

Hahaha yes I noticed the same thing!!! They got some really cool minis so I'm glad to have an excuse to paint their stuff!!!

So proud of our Canadian content creators. Just wanted you to know how much I deeply enjoy and appreciate your content. Just wonderful as always.
Man, it really comes to life when you add in the lighting effects.

Thanks so much Jamie!!! It's a tricky subject to approach but I'm glad you liked my take on it!
Love Infinity, Its what got me back into the hobby, some of the best minis out there
yeah wish them luck
Whoa. It was the colored lighting that really set this one off for me. 👍👍

At last, I get it! Thank you, Dana! Really nice work 👍✨
This looks so awesome, would love to see a whole JSA force in this style!
Oddly enough I finally got over my hangup about painting in a NMM style by using TMM paints. Having a shiny paint helped me figure out reflections and using something like Vallejo Xpress Paints which are pretty matte let me add easy shadows.
Careful there. That might be considered heresy. Don’t let the village elders know.

I really like their models. Have been wanting to paint one for a while.
The paint job looks really cool, fits the mood of the model and the setting.
Your painting style is such a joy to see.
Me looking at thumbnail. "Waaaait, that looks like JSA... It is! That is JSA!" Click.
That is a very good use of fluorescent colors. Great tutorial!
Really lovely subtle effects on here
Great tutorial Dana! I really like the puzzle analogy. This makes me want to give NMM a try.
Thank you, I'm trying to nail NMM and this really helps
Glad to see you painting models for Infinity!
Love this, thanks
Nice Kuroshi Rider! Hope to see more Infinity on your channel soon!
Really liked hearing your thought process on how light falls on the surfaces along with the diagrams. OSL glaze afterward was an excellent effect I want to try to use now too. The infinity bikes all look super cool but are a bit intimidating, so this was great inspiration!
This Celty figure giving me Durarara vibes 😅
Your style works great with Infinity, hoping to see more!
Sweet!
great tips here! Also love seeing Infinity getting more light on it :)
Just when I need to paint my Loonboss... Thank you Squaaaaarespace for sponsoring half of Dana's videos
The OSL really finished off the look of this mini and perfectly captures the aesthetic of Infinity, great job.
Corvus Belli really must have had a lot of JSA boxes laying around. I'm glad everyone is showcasing them, but every vid has been JSA (not that I complain since it's a faction I like).
I wonder whether they let the creators choose or not. Maybe everyone just went for the same faction. 😅
great stuff dana, i too get all my best wet palettes from fontaine santé
Thanks this explained a lot

Mee wondering what’s missing from the video… until you add the glazes and I go “Of course! Dana’s world famous Synthwave!”
Content ❤❤❤
Everytime I watch one of your videos, my paralysis goes away :)
great video! This makes me want the model so bad, shame its only avalible in a pack :(
I tried and tried with nnm. My results were average at best, so I used tmm. I found that worked for me better. I think my problem is what colours to use where.
Your problem most certainly isn't what colors to use, but what values to use.
I really like the look of the finished model 😀 The driver could have used some more color for my taste, but I understand that this was not the focus of the video. How was working with the metal model?
A-MA-ZING!
Oh shit! NMM! Hell yes!
There is a guy on the 'eavier metal fb page did a nmm break down and he starts with the lead Belcher primer to take his reference photos. Am interesting alternative
What are you using for brushes these days?
3 minute club! Wooo
I know this hummus lid well
Non-Metallic Metal Metal Mini
Really liked this video. It makes NMM approachable. I'd love to try some infinity but I really dislike metal models. If they started releasing hard plastic or resin ranges I would be sold.
surprise bisexual lighting tutorial at the end
"Not technically correct" edge highlighting everything is more correct on NMM due to it's tendency to reflect light bouncing off the group
Only the edges facing the brightest light source should be painted with the highest value, though. Edges facing the ground are slightly higher in value due to the light bouncing from the ground, but not. close to the brightest value.
I feel like NMM improves your painting all round, you're actually painting, not just blocking in colors.
