As someone who moved from LEGO to warhammer sure the minis are expensive but I’m not complaining the time to money value is so worth it sure 100 bucks on plastic is gonna feel like a waste if you don’t paint it or paint it rushed so I completely agree with that last statement I spent a good 20 hours on half a squad of grey hunters 40 in total that’s the time spent on a AAA game so worth the money in my opinion

Honestly I could never go back and touch up my old minis. Those are paintjobs that I want to remember and look back on fondly. I feel like those are the benchmarks of your growth. Great video as usual!
I really love how you said you have to paint in the lines before you paint out of them lol Some of my best painting accidents as an amateur have been accidentally going outside the lines.

I have been painting for almost 6 years now; i was always aware of adding lighter paints to the higher surfaces for highlights, but it never occurred to me to reapply the base colour for the mid tone and adding black to it for the shadowy areas after applying the wash! Even these 2 year old videos have something to offer me XD thanks Jay!
I have been watching painting tutorials for years, this is the first that has really shown me how to push me beyond a neatly painted model.
Other vids just didn't hit home like the way you did this one.

Great video-found it super accessible and much more intuitive than other guides/tips I've seen. My favorite part though was the idea of using the back end of the brush to transfer paint from the pot to the palette.
I've seen a lot of painting videos but this one really empowers us to work it out ourselves instead of just copying someone else's scheme, thanks so much.

I think you did a really good job on explaining "painting with light" to us non pro-painters. Though I feel like if I did this on all of my models, I would never finish any army within a lifetime. But this video gave me some really good highlighting ideas that I would like to definetly try with my models!
the reference photos are a damn good idea, ive been trying out highlighting as i usually would stop after the wash. I was just thinking about taking a flashlight and shining it above the model to pick out what parts should be highlighted but it never occurred to me to snap a photo or 2.
Fantastic work! I love how you just painted over the same mini! I feel like most people would just start a new one for fear of "ruining" their previous work but just painting over it was a really cool thing to do. I'm looking forward to your next video!

this video is great, man. thanks for this. I went in thinking I'd not really learn anything, but the taking the pictures with the light shining on the mini to get a more realistic look at how the shading should work was an amazing idea.

Man this video is amazing best explanation of how to highlight I’ve ever seen I have always been terrified that I’ll mess up my models while highlighting but the light trick is going to really help me I just started paining models about 2 months ago going to go back an try this trick out on some of the best models I think I’ve done see if I can’t make them better

Great video and some good points. On the point of reference I would artstation and deviant art. Also, it is better (for me at least) to look at artwork if possible instead of a picture of a mini. Copying someone else will always leave yours looking less than the original, while changing medium (art as opposed to mini) always lends a better result. Thanks for sharing and please stay safe.

PS: you think for vehicles its similar? Tried chipping yesterday the first time (looks more sandblasted now xD). So the sequence for vehicles would be linke this?

Dunno, I like the first version more. It's just cleaner for that scale. Sure there are more spots to the eye to catch on on the second step but I don't feel like that needed. On a bigger scale, I think I would prefer the second version.
I felt my heart stop at :47 seconds in..
cool hints and ideas. instead of a white to hightlight your skin color you could have chosen an offwhite so as not to get that chalky result. also thinner highlight layers on the skin would result in more of the original color shining through (making him look less dead). for red i really like to work of a red-brown - bordeaux red for the shadows and taking it up to a normal red for the highlights to avoid the whole using orange to highlight red fiasko. using just the tiniest amount of offwhite to add to your red works to for highlights.
First one was Tabletop Ready and good for your many many troops.
The second is for your HQs or centerpiece. That’s how I see it anyway :3
You can do your rank and file in method one then come back after your army is tabletop ready and batch them out into number two!

I really enjoy your channel and I use your pointers for painting my army. I have a question due to the fact that I'm an idiot. Creating shadows seems counter productive because all spaces we play in are lit, i.e. creating artificial shadows seem counter productive. I am going to follow your advice none the less, but wouldn't natural shadows of the actual lighting feel more natural?

What blue do you use for Ultramarines? I really like Macragge blue but only have Army Painter. Can I mix up a match from Army Painter?
What black primer do you use iv been looking for a good airbrush primer?
badger stynylrez black primer, best I have used. Goes on smooth through the airbrush with no thinning needed.
3:00 WTF? There it is again! What is with this thing of painting light/bright colours directly over black? How does that ever work at all? The only way I can do it is with an intermediary base colour underneath. ..But 6:50 - that's a genius tip. Love it. :-)
Overall it adds to the look and feel of the result. This model isn’t intended to “pop” like a freshly-suited brightly-colored Space Marine. He lives in a grittier world where light and shadow are more prominent, hence exaggerated. A black undercoat reinforces this darker, more careworn look by affecting the next color you paint.
For a brighter mini that’s not so underworld-looking, use gray or white as a base. For mainly metallic minis (like Space Marines) a gloss paint works wonders. A silver or gold undercoat adds a cold (or warm) tone to the mini.

for reference you would want as much as you can get. for the video I just took one to keep things moving but a front back and maybe a side or two would be very helpful.

My main issue when trying stay within the lines is the *sides* of three-dimensional protrusions... like say, the chest eagle on a Space Marine is easy enough to paint the right color if you just look at it head on; but if you look at it from the side, the thing is three-dimension, so there's a little edge you should theoretically paint up as well, that's way smaller, and I'm never quite sure how to handle it. Am I worrying too much, and some shade will just take care of it, or how do you do this?
I know exactly what you'r talking about, what I usually do is I take the detail, paint it black then paint it gold or silver or whatever. that way there is a tiny line of black instead of the base color underneath.
@@EonsOfBattle Interesting... I assume you mean when the surrounding color is NOT black? So you add a bit of black between the two? That actually sounds really cool, and would probably make the shade look deeper as well.

Some people didn't recommend me Army Painter because they have lower pigmentation that Vallejo/Citadel. What do you think about this?
I don't know if that is true, they seem about the same, Army Painter/Vallejo/GamesWorkshop. Army painter paint does need lots of shaking to properly mix the paint and dries a little glossy, which I don't prefer.
maybe its because im new to this hobby, but i kinda liked the first one more.
the second one looks to me like a mashy, layered or "worn out" version of the first on...like and old version you had multible times in your sweaty hands.
Especially the skin looks more realistic and not like he smashed to much cosmetics on.

whats your monitors contrast ratio ? how deep is your deepest black ? how bright is your white ? what colour your light is ? daylight and artificial light are different too, our eyes and brains can be fooled, so many ways.

I bet there's someone out there that looks at references of the material the mini is supposed to me made from and adds in light accordingly.
I struggle enough as is to were I accept the fact I'll never get good enough to paint like a pro. I have fun doing what I can. I want to get there, yet it always kicks my butt everytime and I mess up what I already accomplished. I spend more time with plastic shame and stripping than actual improvement.
Ehhh.. I've been away from painting for a long, long time, and something I've been seeing a lot of of current TH-cam painting tutorial videos is painters putting light/bright colors straight over black. So, having forgotten a lot of things I experimented with that over the last couple of days to see what happens, and with the exception of Citadel Foundation Paints, it really SUCKS. I say NO to putting light/bright colors over black; surely the right way to put colors like (for example) red/orange/yellow on a black-primed miniature is to first build-up from an _undercoat_ of brown?

Mostly because I don't want to. I'm satisfied with the level I'm at and want to learn just how to be quick at it.

Missed opportunity to emphasize the process of adding layers of paint. You could have paused at the applying red layer to explain that a thinned coat over black will look garbage the first layer, apply a second coat to show it getting slightly better then move forwards. You could then show people the transition they should be looking for in 1 color then blast past the rest. This would have helped people improve significantly better from beginner to beginner +
I prefer to let my models get real shadows and real highlights from actual lighting. But its cool how you do it artificially.

This may be a small gripe, but one of the things that frustrates me slightly with GW models is how easily some stuff becomes obsolete, sometimes as early a year later. Especially after putting extended periods of time to make a model perfect, to then not have it be playable against competitive lists stings.
That's why you go for alternative rules like One Page Rules, Starbreach or many others, since they're free and don't need to feed the machine to sell thousands of new models it can work with whatever you have and changes little
@@jherazob I wasn't aware those are widely accepted rules. I'll look into it! I haven't had the chance to play at my current LGS cuz of Covid, but my last one had a lot of those "That Guy" around with grey armies of top tier stuff XD. It really made the game super hard to keep up with as a person that plays with painted armies.
@@KuganeGaming Those are essentially different games when you get around to it, but OnePageRules in particular is made to be able to directly use your GW armies (not just all of the current ones, but also others like the always lamented Space Dwarves and others GW has abandoned) with far better rulesets, but the fact that they're free and OPR in particular is, well, One Page, you can get your group playing it in an afternoon. StarBreach and others are more involved, but usually they're a single bok/ruleset too, no need for a whole bunch of books just to start playing. Then as you mention Covid many of these have ways to play them solo if you want (either because you want to test an army/list/strategy, because you can't get together with the buddies for whatever reason, or because you just wanna), plus there's stuff like the games by Nordic Weasel which are designed to be played by yourself from the beginning.
And i am forever grateful that the owner of my favorite FLGS has red-hot burning hatred for the That Guy types and has chased many off the store, so my local community is rather chill :D
@@jherazob That is really awesome. I will check them out and see if I can get my LGS involved once this pandemic is done. I actually really wanted a rule set that is stable, because GW really just wants to push sales, lol. Do the rules support armies like genestealer cults as well?
Good job that your LGS chases those type of players off! My current LGS is also really chill and cares about play environment =], so I doubt they have that type of players.
@@KuganeGaming *Everything* in current 40K/Sigmar is on OPR, plus things that aren't like the dwarves I mentioned, inquisitorial retinues or space ratmen if you wanted sci-fi Skaven. Other games take different approaches, most of them tell you directly "use whatever minis you already have in any of these scales", I like too the approach of Starbreach, that instead of rigid "factions" chose a couple dozen sci-fi stereotypes you can fit pretty much any army you wish into: the usual marine types, normal army platoons, space smugglers, space monks with laser swords in both good and evil variety, demons and/or alien monsters, space cops, an army of bugs, a hostile AI, etc.

This might be nice if you already own a camera, but getting a camera just to paint minis seems a bit much to me. Just looking at the shadows and highlights on the actual model under a lamp is enough for me.

Any new painters, PLEASE don't fall into this pitfall!! There is absolutely NO reason to use black primer on your minis, it will only make the painting process 10x more arduous for new painters. Grey primer is always the way to go
I keep hearing that Army Painter quickwashes have a glossy finish compared to Citadel. Is that right, or did I fall for GW propaganda?
they dry very glossy, your mini will need a coat of mat varnish.
It doesn't matter, you just give them a coat of matte varnish in the end
